What bands sound better on vinyl?
« on: 01 Sep 2010, 13:53 »

I recently acquired a turntable and speakers that let me play awesome vinyls. Problem is, I'm not sure what sounds better analog and what bands record digitally/overcompress everything to the point where you might as well get an mp3 to enjoy the sound. So what are some bands that go the extra mile to make an album sound better on record as opposed to iTunes? I know that pretty much anything before mid-90s would have been recorded all analog, but as for modern bands I'm in the dark.

So what would y'all recommend? If musical tastes help, I'm more into indie rock stuff (Silkworm, Make Believe, etc.), punk and metal.

This was recently covered on the last page of the "Where to Start?" thread.

Conclusions (that I read):
Shellac
Jay Reatard

Oh goddammit I asked the same fucking question in the Where to Start thread and I am an idiot for forgetting about it.

Sorry :(

Still, glad to know Shellac (which I was planning on) and Jay Reatard (which never occurred to me) are ones to look out for.

This doesn't really fall into the categories you mentioned but Beirut's first album, Gulag Orkestar, is probably my favorite recently recorded album on vinyl, basically because it sounds like it was recorded in a russian basement in 1917

Black Flag. I have the reissued version of Damaged on vinyl, and it sounds much better than the CD.

This, pretty much. Old school stuff generally sounds a lot better to me, but then again, I think it's all preference. A lot of post-rock sounds incredible on vinyl...I was listening to the new This Will Destroy You EPs on vinyl yesterday, and they both sound amazing.

I agree with this, too... I dunno if it's just my impression, but I feel like thrifting vinyl is an under-appreciated art form.

I would strongly disagree. For a lot of classical and jazz, the absolute transparency of CD-quality audio beats the warmth of vinyl--it's just better to be able to hear everything that's happening. I'd prefer nearly any classical on CD over vinyl, and there are definitely a lot of jazz albums I'd prefer on CD as well (especially since jazz on CD tends to be excellently mastered/remastered).

BIG BLACK

Arcade Fire and Black Moth Super Rainbow too I guess. Really I like owning vinyl more than actually playing it lately

Edit: OH and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, I have Lift Yr Skinny Fists in vinyl and each of the four sides is a track and it is pretty great

Damn Tommy, I've seen a couple used copies within the last year or so. I actually got mine new (lord knows how long it was sitting in that record store), and when I did, there was another unopened copy there. Could still be in that store.

I will look in next week to see if it is still there, if anyone wants it. I'm pretty sure it was Developer, but it may have been Blueblood.

I managed to find a copy of the 1997 press of F#A# infinity. One of the coolest records I own - when a side finishes, it just keeps looping on the last note, since I guess one of the grooves is altered to do so. A lot of other stuff in it too, but I found that awesome.

Dude I will buy any SKWM you can find on Vinyl. If you can find Developer I will fellate you.

There's quite a few on amazon, and it looks like they do sometimes stock Developer. Worth signing up to the RSS feed for availability?

Friend of mine managed to pick that up just recently. Briefly went over plans to murder him, feasibility of getting away with that. It came with some train-flattened pennies in the sleeve.
