How fortunate you are!  :-D

Why do I get a "Chinese Curse" vibe from that statement? ("May you live in interesting times" kind of curse.)

Yay, home from work and wondering if Jeph would post an absurdly early comic after last night's very long awaited one, and he did!

Obviously Dora strong-armed or guilted Sven into doing this "demonstration", and is suffering the result of his lack of enthusiasm. And just wait 'till Faye gets involved...

I'm hoping that Dora actually talks to Sven about this. It would be good for the main cast to have a clue that Sven is not the same guy he was.

To be fair to Sven (which is, I admit, difficult  ), he is being used as a teaching-aid, an animated punching-bag, what the Japanese would call a uke. His lack of enthusiasm is not altogether surprising.

His expression seems to say "God dammit" to me, but I absolutely agree it's hilarious.   :-D  Dora's pretty clearly asked her brother to do her a favor by portraying Sexual Harassment Guy for her training session (hey, at least she didn't make him cosplay).  Actually, the tableaux of expressions in panels 2 and 4 are great -- I like how Hanners is pre-emptively scared in panel 2, heh heh.

And speaking strictly of the art, I really like how Dora's face looks in panel 3.

Okay, i know that never in a million years would I wear a shirt that says, "Nice Tits, Can I Take a Shit On Them?", I still know that if I saw that on the street, I would laugh until I peed (though probably not on anyone's tits).

I loved the last two strips.

PS this is slightly off topic but does anyone wonder if Marten told Sven WHY he was hugging Faye in his underwear? How will he feel about her dating? Hmmm... we will find out I guess.

PPS I worked really hard and resisted the temptation to make a tasteless R. Kelly joke above. Aren't you proud of me?

Y'know, I find myself wondering if when Jeph drew this he had Sven saying something in Panel 2.  Maybe a muttered, "I can't believe I agreed to this..." or just an onomatopoeic *sigh* or a *groan*.  Possibly an edit to the script that he felt worked better with just the image, or to save room?  Whether the original draft had him speaking there or not, though, I do love his expression there - it says everything without him needing to.  One of those subtle little things that reminds us just how far Jeph's artwork has come since he started QC.

As for the plotlines:  Looks like someone's been down to the store and bought himself a soul.  Sven gets over Faye, he stops womanizing, he helps his little sister out by giving pointers to her boyfriend... I'm interested to see where this road he's on will lead.

And I can only think of Leon Redbone singing "No regrets, no hard feelings, it's over...".  (sorry, couldn't find a better recording)

doesn't mean he's over her.

Personally, I think it would've been funnier if he'd been using his sheen

Perhaps I can rephrase:  He's "apparently" over Faye.  Probably in much the same way as he's "apparently" over his womanizing ways.  He did, like we've discussed, settle things and walk away without any more strings in an official capacity.  And while he still admires her figure he apparently is capable of being in the same room as her without going all doe-eyed.  Obviously it's still a bit of an open wound for him, but I don't think he's in any kind of love with her, or sexually fixated on her, or whatever else you want to categorise it as.  He's just... recovering.

Whether or not this means he's actually over Faye remains to be seen.  As does most of his "turned over a new leaf" behaviour.  But I have faith that he's at least trying.

Let's pretend numbvox's post isn't there...

Continuing my apparent conversation with Tergon;

Over is a tricky word... the fact that Sven is trying to be over his womanizing ways is really an indication of how not over Faye he really is.  I agree, he's not pining for her, and he has no illusions over what happened and what will be, hence the song I quoted - it's actually unironic, quite sweet, and expresses where their relationship sits quite well.

I don't know if you followed the link, maybe you know the song - for those who can't make out Leon Redbone's lyrics, here's a transcription;

Quote
No regrets, no hard feelings, it’s over; all the good times together are through.
I’ll have a lifetime of memories to keep me going, I wouldn’t take back one moment spent with you.

I can’t say that your leaving won’t hurt me, but it’s nothing that time can’t erase.
And someday, this hurting will be over, another story, another time, another place.

Someday I’ll be sitting with another, and suddenly a smile will cross my face –
If she asks me what’s so funny, then I’ll tell her - another story, another time, another place.

No regrets, no hard feelings, it’s over; yes it hurts me that I lost out in the race.
But someday, this hurtin’s gonna leave me - another story, another time, another place.

Someday I’ll be sitting with another, and suddenly a smile will cross my face –
If she asks me what’s so funny, then I’ll tell her - another story, another time, another place.

Love leaves a mark.  Faye left hers on Sven without even raising her hand...

"Love" is a strong word too.  I think that's my main thought here... whatever Sven felt for Faye, and I do agree that he obviously felt something, it wasn't love.  I think it was more the shock that he did actually feel something, which for him was completely unusual.  Faye got to him in a way that most girls (if any) obviously don't.  She was a match for him, and she was interesting enough to hold his attention for a long while - long enough for him to see his arsehattery reflected back when she broke it off with him.  But while there were feelings involved, and while it's obviously shaken Sven's world up a little, I think it's easy to overstate how much he cared for her.

That's why I say that Sven is over Faye.  I believe he is - he doesn't really seem to be pining after her, or trying for a relationship with her.  If she came on to him next time they were alone together (which she obviously won't, but I'm being hypothetical), I think his reaction would be to step back and give the situation a good WTF-ing rather than tumbling into the sack with her.
What he's still dealing with is the pain.  Faye made him feel like a complete prick, and made him question the kind of life he was leading.  He hasn't been able to shrug that off, and I think this is what's influencing his changing personality.  It's not that he isn't over Faye, it's that he isn't over the way she made him feel, and there's a difference here.  She can be the catalyst for whatever's going on with him, without necessarily being the embodiment of it.

...I think that makes sense.  Does that make sense or am I just talking out my arse?

While I can agree with your analysis, I disagree with the conclusion - namely that Sven is over Faye.

I concur that he is not pursing her, but he hasn't moved past the emotional damage yet.  He may not be pining over her, or trying to get back to where they were, but emotionally he's still dealing with what happened.

Faye's put it in perspective, and has moved on as a contrast.

Reiver, I think that's actualy Tergon's point, and I wholeheartedly concur.  It may be arse-talking, but that arse makes a lot of sense...

Love is a strong word, maybe too strong in the usual romantic sense.  But the fact that he developed feelings for her at all speaks to at least a form of love.  The fact that, because of her influence, he's actually making changes in his life, speaks to love.  No, he's not pining; it's over, and he's accepting of that.

But I don't think he realized what he was getting himself into until after he screwed it up.  And thanks to her, he's not going to make a mistake like that again.

Well, at least he'll try not to!

Yeah, that basically was my point.  When I say he's "over" Faye I mean that he's not seeking a relationship with her, or pining after her.  Obviously he's been powerfully affected by what he felt for her - and I do concede to how you put it just there, Carl, that it is enough to count as a form of love, at least.  And she's the reason he's trying to change his lifestyle, or at least, he looks like he is.  But Faye herself, as an individual to pursue for sexual, romantic or emotional reasons... I think he's finished there.

If you like, try this:  He's gotten over his relationship with Faye.  He hasn't gotten over his relationship with Faye ending as badly as it did.  That's the crucial difference.

Ordinarily, I would post a long and detailed astronomical comparison, about planets and orbits and gravity and three body problems, but I can't figure out a way that doesn't make it sound like I'm calling Faye fat, and I'm afraid of the consequences is she finds out.

Let's tweak that: I agree Sven was never really in love with Faye—I suspect, for whatever reason, he's never let anyone that close to him emotionally. Remember that Sven's whole existence seems to revolve around not exposing himself in any way—lots of sex partners, but no lovers; writes songs that he knows are ridiculous, but never something he puts his heart and/or soul into (so far as we know); even the one friend we know of, Wil, is someone it's difficult to take seriously, and therefore I doubt they're that close, pre-Faye, anyway. (Note that after Faye, their relationship takes a decided turn when Sven tells Wil not to let Penelope go—before he'd probably have said girls were 'fungible.') :-)

Sven shows no real signs of being 'in love' with Faye that I can see until after the break-up, when Sven gets jealous, which, I imagine, was a nasty shock. But prior to that, he holds her at arm's length, too, or at least thinks he is. It could be argued, I suppose, that Sven was/is in love with Faye and didn't know it, but I think not, although, honestly, it doesn't matter—what's the difference between a love you don't know you have and simply being strongly (for Sven) emotionally connected to Faye as a friend? I'll add I'm not sure Sven is capable of being romantically involved with anyone. Being involved with another person as a friend is, in and of itself, unusual enough for him; 'outside his box,' if you follow me.

This is why I suspect, both before and amid the sex, Sven found himself enjoying Faye's company (that's made pretty clear), achieving with her a closeness I think he previously reserved for Dora (the conversation he has with Dora at lunch and with Faye over her burrito seem pretty similar, for example). For whatever reason, Sven's made a habit of keeping people at a distance (again, I want to blame Mum and Dad, but have zilch evidence for that), but Faye got 'in,' first as a friend, and then as an actual friend with benefits, as opposed to a 'mark' Sven had sex with, which seems to be his usual sort of encounter. I think that sort of relationship explains Sven's emotional commitment to Faye and his depression afterwards: Sven had a close friend, one who isn't 'stuck' with him because of blood ties, and he alienated that friend because, not being used to taking someone else's feelings into consideration (again, something Sven doesn't think he has to do for with his sister), he didn't. And since sexual  intimacy meant far, far more to Faye, whatever she said, there's no way he sees of fixing it. Instead, Sven's forced to look at his behavior and perhaps not like what he sees. Worse, he may realize that Faye isn't the only one he's hurt this way—she's simply the only one he cared enough about to notice. Hence his 'dumps' and his comment to Marten about single girls.

This works for me because it also allows Sven to still be completely unaware of how he's effected his sister, because Dora's a whole other story—it's not like his sister could have been hurt by his self-absorbed antics, is it? (It may come to him in time, though.)

Finally, Sven's need for emotional distance also explains his various comments and actions that maintain said distance between himself and Faye during their relationship. That's the 'funny' part about the whole thing—even while he was getting closer to her, Sven thought he was keeping that precious distance, and didn't realize any different until after things went south.

I know, 'nother wall. But I've been good up til now, haven't I?

Forget construction - you got a doctorate yet?

'cause I think you found thesis material... this is really good stuff.  It's amazng how consistant Jeph's world is without any retconning at all!  The characters are deep enough, and apparently fully realized enough early on, that their actions can be carefully analyzed and understood as a person, or at least a really well written fictional character.  I've seen English theses on weaker and more farfetched topics than this, and if there's a department that's willing to consider a webcomic as literature, you're set...

Really, there should be one somewhere...

Carl, while R's insights are profound and worthy of his receiving high academic honours, I'm thinking more of putting food on the table sort of skills.

Still if you can make a living doing what you love you're in the right job.

I am surprised no one out there has tried to decipher what Hannelore was saying in panel three.

Hannelore already proved to be immune to Sven's seduce-o-ray; maybe she is under the protection of some horrible eldritch entity that owes her mom a favour.

And now that Sven's tried it more than once, it's starting to get annoyed...

If it's real and not a joke, I wonder if that's a little something her parents had implanted (as in hypnotic suggestion) to discourage any suitors they didn't personally select for superior genetic makeup.

I'm sure Hanners reply is gobbledy-gook, but in case it's actually English here it is in crypto-quote form:

a bcdef fg hij'j kglm
nomgfplq bifr nsatumn
cet vmwgxue yjcnn!

As best as I could make it out, anyway. You may want to double check it. I started with "a" and moved to the next letter of the alphabet whenever I encountered a new symbol. I made it as far as "y".

Hmm.  League of Extraordinary Gentlemen vol II got a somewhat similar effect for Martian speech by writing English text backwards and a little distorted, but it was still readable if you tried.  So far as I can tell, that isn't what Jeph did here.

It's some sort of symbol font—but what? Anyway, Hanners better watch it—spout that to the wrong geek and he'd be all over her, his 'Klingon Woman' or somesuch. Then would the flailing commence.

I don't speak enough 'ism' for a doctorate (marx-, femin-, New Historic—, deconstruction—, or other).

But you're both very kind.

All your i's should be a's.

And I'm not sure that's an apostrophe in the 4th word. The "j'j" would almost have to be "s's" which, unless it's an odd possessive, doesn't make too much more sense.  _ _ s's? Gus's? Wes's? DOS's? The apostrophe would almost have to be another letter, and there is an abnormally diverse selection of letters as it is.

EDIT:

Okay, I ran out of patience, and plugged it into a few cryptogram solvers on the web, and the closest it got to making sense was "I WAJNT TO BILL YOUR SQROTVUX WITH SPIDERS AND ZRMOCEN GLASS!"

It's possible that Jeph typoed, and it should read "I WANT TO FILL YOUR SCROTUM WITH SPIDERS AND BROKEN GLASS!"

That's my theory anyways.
