Metroid: Other M
« on: 27 Aug 2010, 00:37 »

So this game comes out in 5 days.

Look at the box art.

And this slick TV spot
Also this rad gameplay

So who else is gonna get it? A friend of mine got it early(read: today) and I am mad jealous.

Here's what he says on it:

Quote
Well, I just played it for about two hours, got two power-ups. It still has a very Metroid feel, and the action is very satisfying. The Diffusion Beam is awesome. The controls are tight, for the most part. Movement is quick and responsive, and the first-person elements are solid. Combat is fun, but I did run into an instance where I was repeatedly dodging instead of performing a lethal strike. Hopefully, this isn't too common.

I've made it through a large part of Sector One, the Biosphere. I've gone through maybe three boss fights so far, all of which incorporated third-person and first-person controls. The dynamic switching is surprisingly not as jarring as some preview articles would lead you to believe. It works well, and it gives the game a very unique twist. Lethal strikes are easy to perform, using the overblast is fun, and the morph ball handles very well.

Metroid purists, fear not. There are hidden compartments with expansions stashed in them to encourage exploration. So far, I've come across seven missile expansions and one energy tank. Energy tanks work like traditional Metroid games. Missile expansions will only add one missile to your maximum count.

You can regenerate your missiles and health by concentrating, which involves aiming the Wii remote at the ceiling and holding A. Your health will only go back up to 99, and only if it falls below 30. Enemies won't drop pick-ups to refill your lost resources. You're either concentrating when the action is slow, or you're holing up in a save room.

Now, onto the part everyone was worried about: the story.

The cutscenes are well-rendered and organic, and the narrative so far is engaging. Admittedly, there has been a moment where I have literally said, "Okay, let's get to the action now." There are a lot of cutscenes in the beginning that could have been spaced out better, but once you get past that, it's fine. They're succinct, but not to the point where it goes by so fast that you're left wondering what the hell you just saw and unable to absorb any information that was presented to you.

Overall, I'm liking what I'm playing. It's different, but it's still Metroid.

I'm interested in it, but kind of wary because preview coverage seemed really split on it. I think it's cool how Nintendo is at least willing to experiment with the Metroid IP more than their others, handing the series over to an American studio for 3 games and then to a developer that makes a very, very different type of game than Metroid traditionally is.

Is there an option to play the game without obnoxiously maudlin Japanese cutscenes that interrupt my fucking Metroid game and give Samus daddy issues?

I've heard they're unskippable but also much more infrequent than people have been led to believe, mostly weighted towards the very beginning and very end of the game.

All I'm saying is that I liked Team Ninja's work with the Ninja Gaiden series in spite of their storytelling skills, not because of them. This particular title has always had me roughly equal parts interested and wary. I like the metroid series' atmosphere best when it's chilly and understated, that's all. The more I know about Samus the less interested I get, basically.

Just want to bump this thread to confirm for any one on the fence that Other M is quite bad.

Admittedly, the controls are pretty tight, at least until you try to shoot missiles. Getting rid of gaining health and ammo by killing enemies was a bad idea. Getting rid of the classic tune that plays when  you get an upgrade is bad. Getting rid of the non-linearity and making the game mostly a straightforward affair is really, really bad.

The story is godawful, mainly because of the voice-acting.

If you are a fan of Super Metroid, Other M will make you sad.

It's OK. The boss battles are good and I've always like Metroid's overall look so it's definitely rental worthy. I'm not really a big fan of having to point the wiimote and shift perspectives in the middle of an action game but they did about as good a job with the mechanic as you can ask for. Still, perspective shifts plus the enemy's tendency to get off screen even in 3rd person mode can be pretty annoying at times-- there were times where my deadliest enemy was the damned camera angle. Thankfully, it's not anywhere near as clunky as the angles and first person archery in Ninja Gaiden. That would have been a disaster given that missiles fill a considerably bigger role in Metroid than archery ever did in Ninja Gaiden. The game is also very easy relative to Ninja Gaiden and has a pretty forgiving checkpoint system so the pedigree shouldn't scare anyone off.

That about sums it up. Although how anyone could tolerate the cutscenes is beyond me.

Yeah, I -hated- the dialog and the way it was delivered. I'm a li'l annoyed that people perceive that as strictly a fanboy-ish kinda thing though. Honestly guys, I don't even like the Metroid series very much in general. It's good but there's quite a few franchises I like better. The bigger problem for me is that I really, really, really hate the sorta cut scenes guys like Hideki Kamiya (DMC, Bayonetta) and Team Ninja seem to specialize in. I don't even really like Resident Evil or the Metal Gear games. Shit, I dunno, maybe I just hate Japan.

How can you hate Bayonetta's cutscenes? They're completely fucking ridiculous. Next you'll be telling me you hate God Hand too, in which case I don't think we can be friends anymore.

Man, Bayonetta had a 7 minute long cut scene in which nothing I gave a damn about ever happened because it was exposition city and because they hadn't even given me any reason to care yet. The rest of the cut scenes were mercifully shorter, but I don't really understand why they would interrupt all the fan service and angel shooting present in the game play just to give you a cut scene in which Bayonetta does the same thing except in a non-interactive format.

Anyway, God Hand I remember more fondly. When Gene beat the piss out of someone, the game usually at least had the graciousness to let you do it yourself, which I appreciate. The cut scenes were also waaay shorter in general and usually didn't just consist of Gene pounding on some mooks. Too bad about the level design though.

Yeah but Bayonetta also had cutscenes where she fucking lava surfs on an angel's corpse. How can you say no to that?
