This strip has me convinced of something: Jeph has something evil up his sleeve planned for Hanners.

Think of it this way - after having to deal with:
  • Smelly customers
  • Espresso machine overflow
  • Coffee grounds spillage
  • Drive-by Pastry splattering by Cosette
  • Garbage bag tears
  • Plunging in the Cave of 20 Asses

...something like Sex is going to seem like a walk in the park.

You shut your filth hole, heathen!

Man, I just came in here to say that you dickweasels.

Also panel four seems really jagged around the edges.

It may just be a glitch but I took it as both girls are really frazzled from their first day on the job.

In unrelated news, what is a little panel four doing right in the middle of panel three?
Right between dora and custumer-guy, there's Hanners and Cosette again!

I figured it was Dora being an eldritch horror from beyond time and space, and in her frustration, she teleported them into the alley.

Like Doctor Manhattan did when they were asking him cancer questions.

Yeah and the line art in the last panel is really broken for me....

Oh well, sympathy to Cosette and Hanners.

Panel 4 is well and truly borked, but panel 3 is a little rough too. Not as obviously, but the (insert name of technique that makes lines appear to be smooth by gradiating colors) doesn't seem to have come off so well, causing jaggies.

At least I hope no one actually has flies buzzing round them due to filthiness.
Flies attracted by that musty dreadlocks odour wouldn't be as bad as the all-too-likely lice, but Jeph wouldn't be able to draw those...

And maybe Dora should have given training priority to stuff like "care and feeding of the cash-register" over "pick-up line rejection". Fine thousand-yard-stare from Cosette.

Weirdly, in the fourth panel, the "jaggies" only seem to affect Cosette and Hanners. The background looks clean to me, except for the white patch under the dustbin-lid handle.

I don't do photoshop, but I do do logic. Logically, I'd guess the background was put together in it's entirety (possibly probably to have onhand for future use) and then the characters were added in afterward, and the post-processing wasn't done then.

But then, that's what we in the science business call a WAG, a Wild Ass Guess.

And as of 0655 EST 22 Sep 10 the results of the poll are:

Other aspects of CoD that Hanners isn't prepared for

The pigeons in the air ducts  4 (8.5%)
The Raccoon  9 (19.1%)
The bathroom if she forgets Angus is lactose intolerant  9 (19.1%)
The swimsuit competition  7 (14.9%)
The Spanish Inquisition  18 (38.3%)

Total Voters: 47

I'm thinking this might be Cossette's last shift at CoD, so far I've seen several good  reasons - messing up orders, dropping food, loosing two hours worth of sales info, possibly damaging the equipment, etc. to recommend an alternate form of employment.  Which has now given me an idea for today's poll.

I'm looking at the clock-type thing above Cosette and Hannelore's head in panel 4.  Logic dictates it's a gas meter or something.  But, this is the internet, so in lieu of logic I choose to believe that it's an old-timey punchcard machine that Dora makes everyone use.  When your shift is over, a big whistle at the top blows really loud shoots out steam!
...a week after it was installed, Faye responded by planting a large wooden post in front of it.  At the end of every shift she shackles her least favourite customer to the post so that the steam-cloud gets them right in the face.  And then she laughs.

Also, considering the "dangerously-incompetent" style that Cosette is rockin', maybe it'll turn out that when she said the fates of her old employers were merely coincidental, she only meant she hadn't intentionally ruined them.  It does strike me that Dora just assumed she was cursed and those places shut by accident, but didn't consider that maybe, Cosette actually destroyed those businesses through bass-ackwards screwups and not Bad Juju.

Is it just me, or does it seem as though 'brain farts' are really behind all of Cosette's screw-ups, not just the mocha-latte thing? If she'd slow down and think, would some of these problems go away?

And maybe Dora should have given training priority to stuff like "care and feeding of the cash-register" over "pick-up line rejection". Fine thousand-yard-stare from Cosette.
Places where I've worked, nobody but managers were allowed to do anything to the register other than run it, and all employees were to scream anytime anything went the slightest bit funny with it. Changing the tapes occasionally became a minor ordeal, too—although it's been a while. Perhaps it's easier now. You kids with all your new-fangled technology and such. Thing probably doesn't even turn your precious little fingers black (with ink).

And yeah, Cosette has Luigi beat in that last panel, doesn't she?

Note: Hanners about to plunge the can is still making me laugh, as is Sven about to test-prop the newbies. Neither has yet gone stale. If I didn't know better, I'd say I'd discovered an unknown streak of cruelty in myself.

I blame it totally on Cosette;  given her track record (and Jeph's top comment)  I was afraid that stuck drawer pot would result in CoD burning down. . .

The last panel doesn't look bad to me (low-end PC, IE6? i think - free pc at crappy Burger King)  ... the two character outlines are, dare i guess, kinda like what Jeph intended: slightly spotted like the Dancing Ants in Adobe Photoshop.  Maybe you poor folk who see it "messed up" have fancy newfangled computerized technology, like them iMac iComputers, or somethin'...    :-P

Oh hello there Mister Red Bull, how are you today, I have drunk two of your brothers already but everything is so shiny I shall drink more of you.

Personally I think that, somewhere in the back of her head, there is a little voice in side Hanners (that probably sounds a lot like her mother) telling her that she signed up for this and that she should have known what it would be like, and that she needs to suck it up and get back to work.

I suspect it's along the lines of:

 Spank new employee: $20,000

depends what under the text balloon which seems to be an 'A', and what words can be placed under the PE letters of 'specials'

Nope, on the topic page (where it lists all the different sub forums) it has a link to the recently replied thread which was this one so I clicked it.  was reading, looked back at the comic in a separate tab based on something that was said and noticed the mess up then commented on it.

Is it just me, or does it seem as though 'brain farts' are really behind all of Cosette's screw-ups, not just the mocha-latte thing? If she'd slow down and think, would some of these problems go away?
Thats a good point, even her tripping and throwing all the donuts on Hanners was probably because she was rushing herself.

Here's a fun thought.  Read #1757 and #1758 (that's Hannelore and Cosette's days, respectively) and compare.

Cosette fucked up the coffee maker by getting it jammed.  Hannelore got covered in coffee and grounds when the coffee maker fucked up at her.
Cosette served some lady the wrong kind of drink.  Hannelore was forced to clean an unusually horrible disaster in the Coffe Of Doom toilets.
Cosette dropped the pastries.  Hannelore got covered in jam.
Cosette let the reciept tape run out.  Hannelore was forced to take over register duty in time to meet stanky hippies.

So while Cosette's screwups are merely comical and inconvenient to the others, they couldn't be worse for poor Hannelore if Cosette were trying to sabotage the poor girl.
Seriously, they do match up.  I wonder, did Jeph mean this, or did it just sort of turn out like that?

It follows naturally from having a diverse set of characters.

And now for something completely different:

Didn't Dora just buy that new coffee machine/espresso maker/thing? Hopefully Cosette didn't mess it up too badly...

Re: 9/23 comic

Ah yes, now Faye has practically guaranteed one of them will quit. Maybe both. Anyone wanna take bets on which one throws in the towel first? I think it should be a new poll. Sure it would have only two real options, but a poll's a poll...

Wow, Faye's cruel.

Oh, yeah, I have read this series before, never mind.

Cosette's probably going to get canned first. She's the one breaking everything and causing problems.

Hannelore's just freaking out about uncleanliness, which is something she's been trying to work on recently. (If this was around #1200 she would have run screaming at the sight of the hippies at the counter.)

Nice, Faye.

I don't think either Faye or Dora's advice is right...more a mix of the two.

In a contest of pure grit, could anyone compete with Hannelore? She's got the courage of a bullfighter to face her daily psychological problems.

I don't get Faye calling them "minibosses". Is there a way to read that which makes sense?

Mini boss is a game term. You usually have to get past several mini bosses to get to the Final Boss.
