I'm in the process of establishing a staging point/larger shelter in the nether. At present, I have placed three blocks in the wall. :-\

No, the proper one will go around it. That was just me hiding scared from a group of monsters and creating an exit-strategy. ;>_>

yeah, mobs can get enchanted weapons and armor now. And spiders can spawn with potion effects. Just wait until you get attacked by an invisible spider!  :-o

In other news, I have found a jungle about 2000 blocks west of spawn. This gives me hope that past it (it's BIG) are some of the other "hot" biomes like desert, savannah, mesa, etc.

By the way, did we say that we were going to allow one degree of separation on the server? Or is it strictly QC forums only?

Then we need to set up some rules where everybody can read them and that won't get buried in the pages of this thread.

Also, who built a bridge to my mountaintop shack? That's cheating. :(

Err, sorry. Anyways, there's a big map in the center of town now, 4x4 with close-up maps of the area around spawn! Be aware, minecraft maps lack information such as "there's a 100 block high mountain here". So, it's not the best resource for how the world looks, but it's pretty good.

Yeah, the new seamless map walls are a cool new feature I really like.

And as far as friends/family, what I'm thinking is more like the one person who you'd like to play on a server with, not a general invite to people you know who play.

All you bastards talking about it got me logging in again for the first time since January.

I got caught up exploring underground caverns, sort of lost. I found a a lot of magma for a change, with some blue stuff I didn't get a good look at before a small fast zombie (that's new) ruined my newbie unarmored shit.

I respawned at night. Still not entirely certain where I am, but I think I found a woolmark I left myself. Also a creeper saved me from a spider! I should totally give the next creeper I see a nice big hug...

OK, just don't do that in multiplayer unless you're in a very safe place, because it doesn't actually pause the game. It does in single-player, so you're fine doing it there. In MP I've found it safest to disconnect back to the title screen and then reconnect to the server when I'm ready.

Oh, and to answer your actual question, F3 gives you some handy information including your XYZ coordinates.

I had a very tense moment yesterday when I encountered a cavalcade of monsters on the bottom of a ravine, most of which I was able to kill by drawing them out, but among them were two witches, so I had to adjust my tactics from hit-and-run to shit-and-run. Witches are fucking scary. What's worse, my failsafe strategy is always to deposit a bucket of lava behind me so the monsters just run into it and burn themselves to death, but witches don't give a fuck, they just drink a potion of fire resistance. I was able to retreat to the top of my staircase, which I'd blocked off, where I was able to kill one with the last of my arrows, but my sword and pickaxe were both on the verge of breaking in half (I had resorted to shoveling zombies to death), so I wasn't about to face the last one head-on. I didn't just want to leave because I left a furnace with a full stack of iron at the bottom, right where that witch was. The solution was to sneak to the bottom, very carefully, and encase the witch into cobblestone while its back was turned. Success!

Then a bit later I died while trying to break through a zombie dungeon, but that turned out all right because I recovered my stuff.

I've been using LB Photo Realism for a long while now, but it doesn't seem to be updated for 1.7 yet.  Which of the Dokucrafts do you recommend? There's a high, light and dark one, and it seems like they're in different levels of brightness.

It's not just a description of brightness, but more of mood. Just go with light, it's the standard. Dark is grim and moody, and high is opulent and ornamented.

I run PureBDCraft 32x32.

ETA: Grr, still no OptiFine yet.  The game runs fine for me without it but I like having more detailed control over the graphics settings.

I am thoroughly enjoying it.  the central town's defenses are rather porous, tho.
keep having mobs swim across the river and blindside me.
!SWIM!
since when could mobs swim?
now that my house is built (yes, I need to decorate) I really want bow and arrows.
next to fishing, sniping mobs from a safe perch is fun.

I'm trying to build out the walls bit by bit, but the island in the lake is ripe for population, which should keep the mobs from coming through that route.

Plenty of string in the community chest to make bows. Feathers are abundant too. If you need flint, you should grab about four stacks of gravel, stack them all under your feet, and then grab a shovel and dig down. You'll have enough flint for about two stacks of arrows.

Walls towards the sea too, then? Maybe some different kind - a dock that's one above the water line makes it impossible to creepers or zombies to get up on land. Skellies will still shoot you, though.

Ladders are just things that make you go up when you move against them. Mobs don't have the AI to use ladders in pathfinding but they will go up them just the same, if they happen to be moving in that direction.

Any right-click mechanism will keep mobs out*, but the risk is pretty low anyhow. Spiders can climb anything as if it were a ladder, and even they have trouble climbing a high wall. You don't need to worry about mobs chasing after you on a ladder unless they cannot go anywhere else.

*The exception being wooden doors, which zombies can break down, but other mechanisms (trapdoors, fence gates) have made that danger pretty much non-existent since you can just use either of those to keep mobs out, and zombies aren't able to break them down. They ought to fix that some time.

I like to build defensive walls 7 blocks high with a single block overhang.  stops spiders everytime.
as for the river: I like to fish.  hard to do from atop a wall.  a peir would be okay.
