It was #1724...
« on: 13 Oct 2010, 15:37 »

...that was my downfall.

My daughter introduced me to XKCD a while ago.  One slow day at work, I was investigating the links, and came upon QC.  The comic of the day was 1724.

Well, the questions were immediate:

Why is it so odd that Hannelore would run an espresso machine?
Why a surprise kiss?
And why did the other characters consider it so dangerous?

I was hooked.  I went back a few days, but realized I'd have to start from the beginning, and went to the archives.  After two very unproductive days at work, and an anti-social evening in between, I had my answers.  Now I wonder what will happen next?

And, on a more personal note, I am rather older than many here.  I'm an IT manager (mainframes  :-o) in north Texas, but originally from Brooklyn, NY.

Now, if only I had one of those special brooms...

If your birth year does not start with "196", you are NOT the oldest one here.

Welcome, anyways.

My birth year starts with "195".  Does anyone need the last digit?  Unless your birth year starts with "194", you can't win!

You win!  Though to people under 30, thare's not much difference between 60 and 70.

I'm not surprised.  I've been lurking a while.  I think there a couple of other folks of advanced age.  That's why I said "among the oldest"

You need to qualify for one of them brooms. If I remember correctly, it was something like taking a morally correct stance on a completely unimportant subject (something in a web comic), which would not make any difference anyway since the author of the web comic isn't listening to us anyway.

Or something.

I also think they've all been handed out.
Which kinda sucks, I agree. At the time, I was agreeing with the holder of the original UBMEOD (I forget his name, but he does quite look like Gene Wilder. I just couldn't say so, because I couldn't f***ing register.

Yes, I was in the same frustrating position.  I felt I had something interesting and not lame to say, and could only lurk.  And it's Tergon you're thinking of.

Perhaps we Johnny-come-lately's could someday earn a UBMEOD 2.0?

I think that we are (unintentionally) in grave danger of violating the "THIS IS NOT A CHATROOM" clause. See the topic immediately above this one... so let's take this elsewhere.

Welcome, Zajdola. Oh wait, Zado... jla.

Oddly enough, I was thinking the same.  If you sent me a message, it would go to my home email, which I do not have access to here at work.  And, since you seemed puzzled, "zadojla" in my logon ID at work.  Why remember more than you have to?  Chuss!

I love that older people enjoy this comic as well as us youngins. And can find their way around a forum.. my mother, born in 63, once unplugged her computer because she read something she didn't like in a forum. Not to say that most of you aren't even better with computers than I am.. that's just the experience I have with an older generation.

Anyway - welcome!

Maybe not the same kind of computers, though.  My particular area of expertise for the last 20 years is managing and scheduling production batch processing using CA-7 on mainframe computers running under the z/OS operating system. I've used about 10 different kinds of computers in by 37-year career, including ones few people under 50 have ever seen.

First computer I had contact with was a Univac my dad had in the garage for a while.  But we needed the space for the car...

I'm an early 60's child, though.  There was definitely something weird about being in Kindergarten for the summer of love!

I was a teenager by then, and wondering why I was missing out.  The all-boys high school and college with a 30-1 ratio of men to women did not help.

Hmph. My first computer was a Timex Sinclair ZX/80 with the 16K expansion pack.
