Best High School pranks
« on: 18 Oct 2010, 21:06 »

High School pranks were always fun. Share yours with the rest of us for amusement and idea fodder!

I seem to recall a friend of mine sneaking a keylogger he wrote onto a few of the computers in our school's library. Our school had 3500 students and by the end of the week he had about 1000 unique user accounts/passwords collected. He then proceeded to fill each of these accounts with gratuitous  amounts of horse porn.

Nope. Not as I recall. The administration went all nuts about computer security for a few weeks and then no one cared anymore, iirc ^__^

I was actually a victim of the most creative one I've seen. At my high school there was a building with the cafeteria on the 2nd floor, and a lobby/locker rooms etc. on the first floor. In the lobby, there was a staircase leading up to a few suspended walkways, arranged in a sort of T formation. Lots of kids (myself included) tended to just leave backpacks and shit around the base of the stairs/the lobby, with sort of a gentleman's agreement not to steal from each other.

The school had mandatory assemblies every Monday morning. They were dull and awful. At the end of one Monday assembly, a group of seniors had an announcement to make via a video they had made, and would project for the school. The video showed them taking everyone's bags, stringing them along heavy cable reaching from one end of the aforementioned lobby walkways to the other, leaving them all suspended ~20 feet above ground, hanging in midair. The ends of the cables were tied off and locked with industrial strength padlocks. At the end of the video they told us where we could find the first hint as to where the keys were, and thus began what amounted to a school-wide scavenger hunt, looking for where they had hidden the keys.

It was pretty brilliant.

my school was super lame, and also outdoor campuses kinda suck

the class of 09 before me, before they graduated, just got a bunch of penis balloons and put them around campus and administration was able to take them down before school officially started anyway... that was super dumb

my class of 2010 was too cliquey/antagonistic/lazy as fuck/anticipatory of getting the fuck out of school to collaborate for at least a little bit to think of good pranks. ideas were thrown around, though. like: "every senior give the dean a cupcake" (variation including the first cupcake being a weed cupcake therefore just making her eat all the other 600 cupcakes)
our mascot was the mustangs, so above the cafeteria and amphitheater it said "MUSTANG COUNTRY" in giant letters... a couple friends of mine are skilled... building cilmbers? so i wanted my buddy to go to the top of the cafeteria and change the sign to "wu-tang country" i mean it wouldn't have been that hard

umm

one time i put a sign on the band room door that said "bring ice cream tomorrow [bad microsoft word clip art teachers love that shit] don't ask questions" because i wanted people to bring ice cream and people did. that made me pretty happy. my band director was kinda just like. "why" but he didn't get mad

this isn't a very contributory post oh well. i just miss high school when calculus wasn't difficult :[

For my senior year me and some guys I knew printed up some wanted posters of George Bush and put them up around the school, since it would piss off the incredibly conservative staff. I don't think any of them stayed up more than an hour, and we were purposefully putting them up in hard-to-reach places.

I didn't go to normal high school, but I did participate in a pretty epic (scale, not effect) prank in the program I was in for April Fool's Day: we labelled every item in the 3-room student lounge with a Post-It note (including every square foot of the wall, every ketchup packet, every book, every chess piece) and wrapped it all up in Saran Wrap (including the refrigerator, couches, television, photocopier).

Video here.  I am in the purple shirt at 0:18 and 0:27.

The program moved this year, but I believe a number of the "wall" Post-Its were still up four years later, and they were still occasionally finding labelled items.

Clearly a massive waste of time, but, hey.  That's what this thread's about, right?

The Science Fiction Literature class at my high school culminated in the Dune Trial, where Paul Atredies is put on trial for being bad for society. People are picked to role-play witnesses and it gets really fun the more that people put into it.

The year that I took the class, we took the opportunity to smuggle in about a ton or so of sand into the classroom so that we could have the trial actually set on Arrakis. We also put a dickload of cinnamon in the sand so that when the teacher walked in, the entire place basically smelled like a cookie. Considering the absurd lengths people have gone to in previous Dune trials, our teacher was impressed, if not surprised (a class several years ago did the same thing, but it had been a while since then).

The classroom had sand for about a week, and the teacher mentioned that he hated teaching his freshmen classes there that week, as they'd see the sand and their brains would just turn off.

My friend did something similar, only it wasn't a prank, he was just having fun.

He randomly posted post-its around the school that said stuff like "brick #1429" and "table #27".

I went to a school called Narrabundah College in Canberra (the Canberra secondary education system is split into two types of school, high schools and colleges, but that's another story). Narrabundah College was what I guess in the US you'd call a "liberal arts" school or something. It had trimesters instead of semesters - so six terms in a year rather than 4. Students were encouraged to call teachers by their first names. Everyone smoked lots of pot. It was a great place.

Anyway in Australian high schools there's a tradition at the end of the school year called "muck up day" where the kids basically pull all sorts of pranks. When I was at Narrabundah College some kids tried to light a bin on fire in the quadrangle or something and there was a stern note in the school newsletter the next day saying that Narrabundah College had no tradition of muck-up day and that if anything like that happened again they might cancel the school formal (that's Australian for prom).

So I don't have any stories about high school pranks. I did, however, go to an awesome school in the best public education system in Australia.

Really? That's crazy! I'd never really heard of semesters before but I thought there are usually just two - one from about August/September til Christmas, and one from January til June. Am I way off here?

I have three terms a year, two eight week ones and one seven week one. Then more than half the year is holiday. We don't really have time for pranks here :( But I loved that video of the senior prank where they just kept crossing the road for ages.

Okay, well, for starters in Australia the school year follows the calendar year (our summer holidays are also our Christmas holidays!). Typically the school year is divided into two semesters, with a two-week winter holiday between them. Classes last for a semester - so students have two suites of classes per year, one in each semester. Each semester is sub-divided into two terms, with a two-week holiday between them (but you have to do assignments for class in those holidays. Boooo!).

So at Narrabundah, pretty much until the year after and my classmates left there (I graduated in 1997), instead of two semesters there were three trimesters, meaning three suites of classes per year.

Ah, I see. We have the three-trimester system in schools up to university level, but they're called terms and the holiday in the middle is the half term holiday.

Christmas in summer must be weeeeirrrrd. What does it leave you with to look forward to?

Harry, there are actually three semesters in a year, but most people do not do summer semester. There are essentially holidays (rather, more like unscheduled periods) between all the terms: Christmas (winter), Spring Break, and Summer Vacation (or, if you do summer classes, a two-week break in like August before autumn). Also, if I understand correctly, I believe we have lots of schools on a similar system to your trimester thingy. We call it "quarters", because there are four, one for each season, and one (our summer) is scheduled with the understanding that most everyone will be on extended holiday. Fall Quarter starts in early to mid-September and goes until December when you have a break for Christmas, Winter Quarter is from january until Spring Break (in late March or early April), Spring Quarter is from April to the end of June when there is a break for Independence Day/summer stuff, and then Summer Quarter that no one really pays any attention to that lasts from whenever to some other time around the beginning of September, when we have a bank holiday called Labor Day.

My school put the kibosh on muck-up day. They'd threaten to not allow us to sit our exams at the College and we'd have to find another school that'd process us in time for the HSC. As you can tell, Australia has a proud history of authoritarian, private Catholic education.

Well, I was going based on the schedule I know Northwestern is still on. Whatevs. The only real important thing is that there are 4 roughly equal length terms (or 3, in the case of semesters).

There was a dead deer's foot hanging around my school in various locations for at least a week. I think I know the guy who did it, but it was never really clear. The situation was so bizarre.

Also my friends and I inserted something special into our morning news on the last day of senior year. We played this.

I honestly don't remember which pranks were real and which pranks were just "oh man wouldn't it be funny if someone did X." Like, I have a recollection of someone blocking the headmaster's door with a wall of bottles, but is that real or am I remembering just talking about that idea? I do remember that a bunch of senior girls streaked naked through the gym while people were taking the SAT, mostly because I remember wishing I had been taking the SAT that day.

Also, there were a lot of things people did that don't exactly qualify as "pranks" but certainly have a similar vibe. Like, people playing campus golf (we had a huge campus, and "campus golf" is where you hit tennis balls at buildings designated as "holes") during school hours, that sort of thing.

Thinking now about pranks in college, they were generally not as mean-spirited as high-school pranks. Yet another example of how the "these are the best years of your life" people were full of shit.

Our school banned muck up day with the threat of police involvement or expulsion. Was pretty shit.

But my uncle and some of his mates kidnapped a teacher, stuck him in a coffin, and dumped him in the middle of the town oval. I always thought that was pretty amazing.

It doesn't seem to be on YouTube but when Sam Kekovich was doing his rants on the Fat all those years ago he came out with the classic line "I'm not racist, some of my best friends should be sent back to where they came from."

Aaden Foli, we frown heavily on the use of sexual or racial epithets around here. I'm sure you're not homophobic but we still don't think anyone should use the word "gay" in a derogatory sense. It's not a bad thing to be homosexual, so "gay" shouldn't be used as an insult.

I'm not a buzz-killer but that seems more than a little environmentally irresponsible.

Shit, fair enough. Didn't see that one coming. I assume you all know what the word was.

My point is, in that sense, it isn't even remotely used in a derogatory way, but rather in a 'chummy' way. I don't see what the fuss is there.

Also, is there a quick reply box?

ALSO, sorry for completely derailing the thread's original discussion.

It's just easier to use words that can't be taken as offensive, I guess.
Also there is a quick reply box? I am typing in it right now.

As for the original thread topic, we were told at both my junior and senior Catholic high schools that if we did any pranks, the school formal would be cancelled and the perpetrators would be expelled. So we didn't do anything.
I think once when I was in Year 7, some of the Year 10 kids dressed a statue in heart boxer shorts. That was pretty funny.

How so? It's not like they got left there permanently (it would make it particularly difficult for them to play sports on it if they left them in).
