Vandalism in upstate NY
« on: 29 Oct 2010, 09:00 »

Seven years ago, the congregation of Our Lady of the Annunciation in Queensbury, NY (RC Diocese of Albany) got a new organ.  300 donors and more helped pay for it, and it was built by the organist, who didn't charge for his labour:

Yesterday, the pastor bought a keyboard and put the organ in a skip, literally:

At least one other church wanted it; even the scrap value of the lead and tin in the pipes would be considerable.  And what do the donors think?  I suppose there has to be a story behind vandalism on this scale, but it hasn't emerged yet.  Story here.

As a boy, I used to sing in the choir of St Patrick's Cathedral Armagh (CoI) and I remember the long campaign to raise money for and build a new organ. The sheer amount of work and money involved was incredible. The thought of something with that much love and effort put into it being stuck in a skip like that offends me to my core.

Make a crucifix out of the wreckage and nail the pastor to it.

That is crazy.  I mean it looked great.  Has to be some sort of BS going on.

well I knew that

(it was the NY thing that threw me I suppose)

On topic, that was a gorgeous organ! How did one guy have the authority to tear it out after so many people put money into it?

My church is pulling out their organ as part of a "renovation" project, because "no one uses it". But the one time they did use it, everyone applauded and was talking about it for weeks.

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."

That's absolutely awful. Even if it never gets used, a proper organ is a beautiful thing.

"Upstate NY" - I was quoting the report I had seen, and it seemed to me understandable for most people.  I did change "dumpster" to "skip", though.   I am, of course, stereotypically British.

There are further pictures here, if you scroll down.  More information is emerging.  The organ was ten years old, not seven.  It was removed with the help of an organ firm who seem to have salvaged the pipework.  There were apparently concerns about the strength of the gallery it was on - but no extra supports were installed during the removal which one would have expected if that was a real concern.

Maybe the gallery was just fine, until they went and put a bunch of organ pipes onto it?
