When I was a kid we used to pick up echidnas  that were at risk of getting hit by cars and take them home (I think also because as a kid I thought they were awesome), where they would dig under our backyard's fence and get away.

You don't think they're awesome anymore? On the motorway to Melbourne we saw a police car pulled over on the side of the road, the cop was on his hands and knees trying to get an echidna out from under the car. Adorable.

I do think they are awesome, but not awesome enough to try and wrangle them into a milk crate to take home with me.

Australia is honestly not that dangerous. There is practically no chance of getting killed by an animal in the bush if you think ahead (as opposed to places with things like bears, moose, bulls, lions, hippo, rhinos, etc.). All the large animals are non-confrontational, so unless you do something like try and steal a baby emu or hug a wombat you'll be right.

The only real danger is snakes, but if you watch where you're walking and make enough noise, you probably won't get into any trouble, and even if you do, if you wear long pants and/or gaiters you should be safe from their venom.

The ocean on the other hand is full of things that can do some serious damage but most of that bollocks is further up the coast from me anyway.

There are some pretty awesome cars down there too.

GM almost brought the HSV Maloo stateside as the G8 ST but then decided America doesn't like trucks and axed the entire Pontiac brand. (I think they should follow tradition and slap the federalized Caprice front end on and call it an El Camino. Replace those godawful Isuzu designed pickups of theirs with something decent.)

That is an awful car. It is ugly, it is a stupid revved up ute (which is what seems to be the loudest cars taht drive past my apartment at all hours of the night), is an awful colour, the rims on the wheels are shit and it is just generally ugly.

I guess maybe it is fast or something?

I was hoping someone would bring up cars. I absolutely adore big aussie v8s. They're just the most perfect thing. All these kids want their SLRs and their Skylines and so on but my dream car is a BA GT-P.

And as ridiculous as Maloos and Super Pursuits and so on are I kinda love them. They're audacious as hell in a uniquely Australian way. Where else are boy's dream cars just the tricked out versions of the workhorses?

I generally agree with this. I just can't handle the coupe ute look. Here in the midwest there is a definite segment of the population that likes trucks with big ass engines that are startingly fast, but we like to keep 'em boxy looking and enormous.

Anyway, I just have a soft spot for pontiacs because my first car was a ridiculous old beat up '78 firebird my equally ridiculous tattooed and tobacco chewing uncle gave me. It made me feel really white trash, something that I actually sort of appreciated at the time given that my stepfather's Hormel exec father was insisting on sending me to private school at the time.

I dunno if it's even a real Aussie.  Sounded kinda like a kiwi bunging on an Aussie accent?  Or maybe it's just a dude from another part of Australia with a slightly different regional accent, I dunno.

Also, I have heard plenty of Aussies that talk exactly like that, it's just that they are usually people I don't want to associate with, like oh I don't know, the entirety of my mum's side of my family :(

I like australia quite a bit, so much so that I'll be moving to Sydney in late january. It certainly doesn't hurt that the average wage is quite a lot higher and the standard of living tends to be better.
