Guitar gear: Future classics?
« on: 04 Nov 2010, 16:52 »

What modern guitar gear do you think will be lusted after in 30-40 years?

Discuss.

Kwaping, to be honest with you? Squier gear. Why? It's relatively simple. And most of it doesn't come pre-worn. Fuck that pre-worn cockshit.

Dovey, man, don't joke about the Holocaust.

Tommy, that thing just ruined my day.

Patrick you only like Squier gear because you can fuck it up and not feel silly about it.

I'm casting my vote for Danelectro.

How the fuck does Danelectro count as "future classics", their reputation is staked entirely on making the same dang ole guitars that they have for 40-some years

Gibson Firebird X

actually, considering the reason why jazzmasters and jags are popular now, this is kind of a possibility. they probably play well enough, and in ten years, they may either be really expensive or dogshit cheap like jazzy's were in the 80's when indie rock bands started collecting and screwing with them. that being said, those guitars are far more conducive by design to such use and fender made a lot more of them. but you never know. After all, travis beans have only shot through the roof in price and popularity in very recent years and there really weren't all that many of them made. gotta say, this is all highly unlikely for one reason, though: dusk tigers and especially that firebird thing are ugly. it's very rare that ugly guitars become popular though they may be a fad for a hot minute.

I think easily modifiable/personalisable stuff will stay around. I know they stopped making gutiars like the Squier 51, but others will come. I wouldn't be surprised if something like that came out again soon.

Actually to be honest the only reason I fucked up my Squier is because the middle pickup broke and I decided to not give an actual fuck about it. So I just fucked with it and now it's roughly the coolest thing I own.

He pulled an Eddie Van Halen wiring job on his piece of shit Strat and jizzed silver spray paint and stickers all over it and now it's actually pretty great.

It's probably worthwhile to note that he lucked out with regards to Squier's biggest problem, quality control, and got a really playable one. There's some demos online if he chooses to post them.

I have a demo from when it was still two of the original pickups. It's the neck and the bridge pickup together. Warning: tone is BRIGHTER THAN CUNTS

http://www.box.net/shared/atq6pk6os0

Also I only just realized that the file name has a huge typo in it. Huh. Only took me two years to notice.

Along the lines of really modifiable guitars, what about the first wave of tiny tube amps and heads, eg Epiphone Valve Jr and Fender Champ 600? There seem to be more mod kits for those amps out there than you can count.

Personally, right now I'd rather the Marshall Class 5 or a Vox AC4TV though.

Fender Blues Junior? Small all-tube amp with a huge modding community behind it. I personally don't see it as a future classic but it fits your description.

VG Strats.

You might laugh but they are already going for about 40% more than you could pick one up retail 18 months ago.

And for the fact Gibson has a Robot guitar in basically every model they make, makes the Strat seem better just because its not a Gibson.

Its always a hard one to call because who in the 1950s thought that the same design of the Stratocaster would still be around now, and still essentially be the best?
I always hope that the future brings something cool in regards to smooshing technology and guitars together, rather than a guitar that can tune itself or whatever. We can only dream that holograms of Stevie Ray Vaughan will become available - add a hot jam to your next gig.

Maybe some of the stuff that Eastwood is putting out, but those are mostly clones of things that are already highly sought after, so I'm not sure if that counts.
As far as pedals go I'd be very surprised if some of the stuff Diamond puts out don't skyrocket in value as soon as they stop making them, especially the Memory Lane and the compressor.
The memory lane is 600 bucks new, I'd hate to image what they'll cost once they're vintage.
A lot of sweet big muff-esque (EQD Hoof, Stomp Under Foot, Skreddy Pig Mine, etc) pedals will probably fetch a high price a couple of decades down the road as well.

I'd imagine some of Godin's finer models will become very well-regarded in 20 years, now that they're finally making an aesthetically pleasing guitar. Fenders, too -- the current crop are very nicely made, thoughtfully designed guitars, from a brand that is synonymous with the electric guitar. Larrivee and Breedlove acoustics.

Ampwise, a lot of the boutique stuff will hold its value -- BadCat, Matchless, /13, Suhr. I can see the modern Traynors becoming legendary very soon, if only for their low used value and decent tone. Simple, well made tube amps pretty much never go out of style. The Peavey 6505 is definitely a standard in the heavier realm. I doubt anything digital will hold its value, only because of the constant improvements.

I am so glad somebody said this because I completely forgot to. They make a singlecut hollowbody with P-90s and a 3-way toggle (positioned very much like a Les Paul's) that completely. Fucking. SLAYS.

See also: the brands that fall under their umbrella (Art & Lutherie, Simon & Patrick, Seagull, some other shit I forgot) and the acoustics made by them.

5th Avenue is what you're looking for, Patrick. I played the non-cutaway version with a single P90 in the neck in a store.

The blues, man. That guitar is just pure blues.

The only thing stopping Godins from being more popular is that I've seen their price jump 20% when they cross the border. Poor American fucks.

Still a deal. Their Summit and Icon models kick the fuck out of Gibsons at nearly half the price. My Exit 22 (a lower end model) can definitely hang with my SG. If it got some new pickups, it would be on the same level.

It just looks weird to have a humbucker directly mounted to the body. It looks unfinished, imo.

Then again, a mounting ring on top of a pickguard, wrrrragh I hate that shit. It's the only thing that's really holding me back from getting the blacktop Jazzmaster right now.

(well that and not having $450)

I don't ever think I've met people who prefer pickup rings before. I didn't know you people existed beyond Les Paul fanboys. IMO pickup rings make guitars look cheap. I guess that's from seeing so many cheapos with them, though. It's the same reason I fucking hate sunburst strats with white pickguards. There are probably more strat-knockoffs in the world than people. I'ts come to the point where I can't even enjoy vintage sunburst strats. That, and the tiny frets, outdated pickups/trem and the blueswankers trying to imitate Hendrix/SRV/Clapton on them. Come to think of it, I know one of those blueswankers. Fuck.

TL;DR unnecessary rambly rant about guitspanks.
