So guys, the trailer is up!

http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/wb/greenlantern/

I think it looks awesome, but I have a reasonably limited knowledge of the Green Lantern franchise. I like how comical Hammond looks, but I'm not entirely sure about Peter Saarsgard in the role. That trailer doesn't give a lot away about how he'll play it though, I guess.

director and/or some other idiot:
"here's an idea: instead of putting Mr. Reynolds in a fancy suit and using some mild CG on it, let's make a full CGI image of him that looks even skinnier than Christian Bale in The Machinist, and use that instead of the real, physical Ryan Reynolds!"

execubots:

It definitely looks like they're trying to emulate the tone of the Iron Man movies. I know next to nothing about Green Lantern or DC comics in general so I don't know how well that will play. Looks kinda neat though.

I just really want Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, and that's pretty much all.

I always saw Ryan Reynolds as a Wally West Flash, I don't really see Hal being all jokey like Reynolds usually is.

I'm really not up on comic characters in general, but I agree. I feel like if they want to do it with the comic-relief element they should have gone with The Flash. The humor element is a lot more central to his character and I feel like it could make for a better movie that stays truer to the source.

I'm withholding judgment. Hal does start out a bit like Tony Stark - alcohol. Green Lanterns are defined by their strength of will, and this often equates to overconfidence. I agree I had hoped to see Ryan Reynolds as either Deadpool or Wally West Flash.
I am just a little disappointed that they decided to do the origin story. Comic book origin movies have been done to death, and Hal Jordan's arc gets very dark and interesting. Maybe I'll just have to hope for sequels.

I had pretty much lost hope for this movie around the time they announced Ryan Reynolds as Hal. I don't mean to sound rude but I sort of can't stand Ryan Reynolds. Partly because he reminds me Dane Cook (who I loathe) if he took a fucking shower, and partly because I haven't ever really liked any character he has played. I always thought Nathan Fillion would have been a perfect Hal Jordan, and saw no reason he wasn't considered for the part. The trailer just served to confirm all my fears about the movie and add in some new ones. Seriously, I can't for the life of me think of why they chose Hector goddamn Hammond for the villain. He is about as lame as GL villains get, and doesn't really help set up the real villain, Sinestro. Also, hearing him say "The one thing Green Lanterns are is fearless, and that's not me" made me sad inside. They're turning Hal Jordan who is about as fearless and strong-willed of a character as has ever existed into a blubbering pussy, and that's just not okay. DC needs to get their shit together with every franchise besides Batman and start making some good movies for a change. They have the capability to put out a much better product (if you've seen the animated movies of late, you understand how excellent they are) but sit there and fester in what was cool rather than making what will be cool.

tl;dr : The movie sucks and DC sucks for making it.

Bottom-line is all we've seen so far is the trailer. Is it in every fans nature to predict the apocalypse when viewing a single trailer? Absolutely. It's fun to speculate the worse in everything, especially when the character that we know might not be represented in the same light how we remember him when growing up.

I myself am a huge fan of Hal Jordan. I have faith in this movie because Geoff Johns (current comic writer for Green Lantern) is on board with the project, and I follow the saying "In Geoff Johns we trust".

I'll reserve any negative judgements until after I've seen the movie. As for fans being furious that John Stewart isn't the Green Lantern, it makes me laugh. Any quick Google search will show you he was no where close to being the original. That one is DC's fault because of the JLU cartoons.

Trailers can teach us a great deal about a movie though. The trailer for RED made it very clear that I should not expect a movie that was faithful to the comic, but an action comedy with an A-list cast. That helped me enjoy the movie more (though I still wouldn't watch it again). This trailer has told me all the things I was worried about may well be coming to fruition as far as this movie goes, and my love for Geoff Johns's work is not really strong enough to offset the poor characterization and stylistic choices I can already see coming. It's a heads up, to me at least, that I will probably not like this movie and should not get excited.

I remember for the longest time I kept hearing rumors that DC was going to do a funny Green Lantern movie, casting someone like Jack Black to be a slacker that some how gets a hold of the ring and then has to save the galaxy or something.

I really wanted to see that, even if it included Jack Black in skin tight spandex

To me it seems like everything he does anymore is just "I'm so SILLY! Look how SILLY I am, isn't that hilarious?!" Then again, I've never been a fan.

The trailer for Green Lantern reminded me too much of the immense ball of corny that was The Fantastic Four. I think I'll pass. But - Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool plzkthx.

I like Jack Black's earlier stuff, like he was pretty funny back in the days of like High Fidelity, and he does pretty good non-movie stuff, but takes the worst goddamn film roles (Tropic Thunder nonwithstanding). It's disappointing.

The reason ya'll want a Black Green Lantern is because Black Super Heroes are always superior and usually have more emotional strength... not to mention you can't really do Green Lantern without an origin story. Haven't ya'll realized yet? We're too stupid to not have origin stories... we all have Wikipedia and all that, but we need origin stories to spark our interest because we like seeing the fumbling and failing and mess-ups of super humans. That's why comic book writers kill so many heroes these days.

Superman.
Spider Man.
Batman.

All of them have died... not to mention the lesser heroes that no one likes and despises (Wolverine, Jean Gray, basically every X-man and X-men villain).

They should just make movie theatre musicals of every super hero movie a la RENT but minus HIV/AIDs. We're that dumb, we need that much inspiration. We need more men in wigs and santa outfits singing about killing dogs and somehow make it as dark as Joker killing Robin with a steel pipe and then somehow give Batman enough STD's that we want him to fail and then make him win.

We won't be happy until super heroes are the last thing in the universe we like.

Long story short... we're obsessed with them, we love them, we need them and we're secretly all pissed Moonknight and Nova and Blue Beetle don't go around fighting crime in our cities and have awesome villains like Venom and Skrulls (which are awesome and if you have to fight me on this, you won't win) and Clayface.

So just get over your psuedo-hipster anti (this movie sucks) psychology.
