She apparently has had kidney issues for a while now, and the last few days she's refused to eat anything except soft kitty treats.

Since we don't have it in the budget for a kidney transplant, we really don't have... a choice.

Okay, I have to get off to bed or I'm going to just bawl for the next three hours.

Much of the stuff a human can get, an animal can get, especially if it's a cat or dog. I mean, my cat just had a somewhat complicated fracture in his arm repaired by surgery. I've had a ferret go in for adrenal gland tumor de-bulking (he didn't make it), another go in for exploratory surgery on his stomach, and several more have skin tumors removed. There are veterinary neurology and ophthalmology specialists near me, and getting an ultrasound or x-ray is easy enough. Pets can even get MRIs.

Many human surgical procedures were perfected on animals in the past.  It's done less nowadays, but animals definitely benefit from the practice.

I'm so sorry to hear that jwhouk. I still remember how I felt, when the first gecko I had died without a sign. We still have one of her offspring though.

It feels horrible to lose an animal you've bonded with for so long. Remember the good times you had with your cat and try to keep in mind that she had a good life. It hurts to have this happen to pets, but at least to me it helps to keep them in a good memory.

I'm sorry you had to go through that, jwhouk. I've had several cats pass away due to kidney failure, so I know how it feels. Especially to have it come on so suddenly...

I had a German Shepherd for about seven years (we got her when she was three), and she just passed away two months ago, from cancer. We though she was having breathing problems, so we brought her in and the vet took some x-rays...apparently her lungs had been filling with blood for about a week prior. We didn't have the money for biopsies or treatment, and the vet said it would only cause her more pain anyway, so...we let her rest. She's in a better place now.

Standard disclaimer: Stop me if I've told this before.

I believe in an afterlife because I want to. And when one of our favorite cats,  kidney-diseased and wasting away, was trying to lap water from a puddle out in the yard, I talked to her, telling her it was OK to go, and that we'd talk about old times bye and bye, in another life. I think she smiled back at me.
I never saw her again. Apparently she went out in the woods behind the house. Never saw so much as a carcass. But OMG it hurts! That memory still hurts.

It was more or less a question of when we'd be able to arrange to do it. My schedule's more flexible, whereas my wife's isn't.

And neko - I live out in the middle of BF Nowhere, Wisconsin. I'm 30 minutes from civilization - and even that is questionable.

I was informed that if something happened to my cat during non-office hours, I'd be able to take  her to the Central Wisconsin Veterinary Hospital - which is a good 30-33 minutes.

John, you may recall I went through something similar with two of the oldest of our cats (16 and 17, daughter and mother) last summer.  With the difference that we couldn't afford to put them to sleep.

Watching them die was so hard.  I wish you the best, man.

A Pets Prayer

Author: Unknown

If it should be, that I grow frail and weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then, you must do what must be done
For this, the last battle, can't be won.
Don't let your grief stay your hand,
For this day more than the rest,
Your love and friendship stand the test.
We've had so many years,
What is to come can hold no fear.
You'd not want me to suffer, so
When the time comes, please let me go.
Take me where my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me to the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you'll see it is a kindness you do for me
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.
Don't grieve it should be you who this thing decides to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years,
Don't let your heart hold tears.
SMILE, FOR WE WALKED TOGETHER FOR AWHILE.

Mm, just the thread-title would seriously bum me out seeing it for a while after ours died, even though I never posted stuff of him here.

It could use a name-change, IMO, if just to not continuously sadden people who have that sort of thing happen.

Joe, what's your outlook on getting a kitten? I've posted it before, but I think the best antidote for the loss of a beloved pet is to cuddle, laugh at and laugh with a new little one.

Gonna have to wait a while. Not just because of $ but because of emotional attachment.

We do know it's not going to be the same color/type. Won't be a Siamese or a Long Hair, either. Will be female.

But not now. I haven't even gotten her ashes back yet.

If you just need a little attention, you can go to a local shelter and volunteer to play with some kittens. Your kitty would understand, I'm sure.

Funny you should say that: I went and took the food we had left over from her (including an entire bag of unopened cat food) to the local Humane Society. They actually suggested that very thing.

I decided not to take her up on it.

When my family's first dog, Patches, died we all thought it would be too weird to ever get another Jack Russell terrier. Now after a few years and having a dog that looked a lot like a Labrador when she was a pup but her features have became more terrier like, I actually would love another Jack Russell. For some reason that makes me feel really guilty and near tears to say.

There's only two cats I really remember growing up - an orange tabby DSH that we called Daylight and my dad and stepmom's cat, Pearl.

I'm pretty sure my next cat's gonna be either black or grey. Or one of those black-grey striped kitties.

But I gotta at least get my cat's ashes back from the vet first, kids.

So! The vet that I think broke my cat's arm is now charging us for a visit that they told me at the time I didn't have to  pay for. Because THEY BROKE MY CAT'S ARM. But now I have a bill for $370 that I can't afford. So that's just fucking awesome.

And my ferret's belly is bloated. He's still eating, drinking, peeing, and pooping, which means it probably has to do with the tumor we found a couple months ago but can't treat. This means I probably won't have him much longer. Then that will leave my other ferret all alone, as I can't afford to get another one anytime soon.

they are watching him and my wife will pick him up this afternoon.

Bob: I was so amused by that article. The picture is fantastic. My ferrets are only like 2 pounds each. You couldn't even tie them together to make a poodle.

Dove: do you know why he's getting blockages? Sometimes a change in diet can fix it, or he might need medicine, if it's something more serious, like adrenal/hormone issues.

No, he came from my oldest daughter's mother's house when she moved in with us. One of her previous cats that she had over there died from having a bunch of crystals in his bladder. Of course my ex would not take the cat to the vet so I had to do it and be there with my daughter when she got the news they had to put her cat down.

Not sure if this is a similar situation or not but I do know that the eat some damn nice cat food.

Damn nice cat food can still contain the wrong things, or the wrong portions of things cats need. It would be worth asking the vet for a suggestion on food that is less likely to create crystals.
