I am more strongly considering pet ferrets. I like having other carnivores around, and little fur snakes be cute.

I definitely suggest talking with a ferret shelter owner before you really get settled on the idea of ferrets. They're a lot more complex than most cage animals. I can suggest two different shelters near you, but I am not sure which will be closer.

I'm having to make do with other people's pets at the moment. Today we had a fun walk with a neighbor's dog. At one point she found a pond, stood in the middle, noticed she had gotten wet, and while still standing in the middle, shook.

Kitty actually let me hold her and pet her this morning, for an extended period of time - and even gave her some skritches behind the ears.

And a lot of the scratch marks on my legs are starting to heal now, too!

My buddy still hasn't placed the kitty I rescued earlier this summer... I am tempted to take her cross country with me... She's such a sweetheart... but I am still allergic to cats.

I am too, but I've been living with a lovable furball for just about 5 years now! If they are a short haired cat, prolonged exposure may actually help to lessen your allergies! I had an allergy test done about 2 years after I moved in with Nick (and Fuzz) and according to the test, I was "not allergic". I still have issues with long haired cats and forget kittens....we attempted an adoption of one around a month old and it was living hell for me.

Does your landlord allow cats?

My landlord does indeed allow cats and dogs with a deposit. My rescue is house broken already so that would make life a bit easier. I just don't want to risk the allergy issue (my allergy isn't bad, but it's bad enough) and I honestly don't have a decent way to get her from A to B, I don't own a carrier, have food, water, etc to transport her with, and I leave in less then 24 hours. Not much room in the car either, even if she's a petite little creature.

Yeah, they need room to roam a bit if it's a longer trip. Also being stuck in a car with a cat box is pretty awful, let me tell you. Also you'd have no relief if your allergies flared up because it's a small space. I hope she finds a home!!!

*sigh*

It's moments like this that remind me of just how awesome Fuzz is and how much I love this little weirdo.

I was sitting at my computer, got up and left the room, came back to find her sitting in my spot, sat in front of her/on chair/slightly hanging off chair.

Now, I have a kitty snuggling my butt.

Worst feeling in the world:

Kitten tries to jump onto your lap, then onto your desk - misses the desk, starts to slip to the floor, and before you can do anything about it, back claws dig RIGHT into your thigh.

And then, when you look down, you don't just see two long scratch marks on your thigh, but you see a piece of kitten's CLAW sticking out of your scratch mark. (Not the whole thing; just about the consistency of a trim piece of a fingernail.)

OW.

Had to hold a washcloth on it for a few minutes, then applied three band-aids - and that still didn't cover the whole thing.  :-o

OW is right!

One one similar occasion, my wife stuck her hand out to keep the cat from falling.  Results were more or less the same, except it was her arm that got scratched all to shreds.

Maybe it was just the about to fall off sheath of the claw. My cats bite on their claws and pull them away from their teeth. Which must explain why I find little discards on the floor and furniture.

I keep thinking I should learn to clip the very short sharp ends of their claws for my protection.

It was almost certainly a part that was going to come off anyway. Cat nails are tougher than human nails and it takes a lot of work to remove them.

It's always a good idea to trim cat's nails, as well. It doesn't take long, and is not that difficult, if you have either a calmer cat or a helper or two. Just be sure not to get too close to the quick.

Not sure that'll work unless you do it very regularly. Those sheaths fall off to make sure the claw stays sharp. My cat used to sharpen his claws on the older pieces of wooden garden furniture, so I think that even if we clipped them regularly he'd just sharpen them back in shape in no time.

He was actually really gentle with his claws, and we almost never got scratches from him, either from swiping or by accident. Whenever you'd have im in your lap he'd do that pawing where he digs his claws in your leg, which can hurt sometimes but never breaks your skin or anything. He'd also extend his hind claws if I'd pet him while he was sleeping on my legs or chest, but his hind claws were completely blunted so it was just a bit tickly.

Anyway, a friend who's a foreign student from Italy has a rabbit, but since she's gone home for the holidays her rabbit went to another foreign student from Italy, and since he's having his room inspected this week I get to babysit the rabbit for a few days. Yaay.

Yeah, we're about the same.

Rocko has gotten better about having his bi-weekly manicure. He used to nip, but he's definitely chilled out. I think he's figured out that the less he squirms and nibbles, the faster he gets back in his cage with his rewards snacks. We have no choice but to do his regularly or they grow like weeds and could curl and hurt his little paws. :-\

Fuzz, on the other hand....

Her claws are like little daggers if we don't keep up on them- and she's not afraid to use them. We have to clip her first or else she'll see us with Rocko and bolt. The we not only have to find her, we have to catch her after she's been found and then she's all riled up and obnoxious. Anyway. Clipping her first. Yeah. 2 of us can just barely get this done...she writhes and swings her feet around and makes gutteral noises and is just allllll sorts of unpleasant. Nick is a strong dude and sometimes she is just too much for him. He made the mistake of doing this shirtless. Once. And only once. Once she stops moving for a split second I can actually clip her claws pretty fast but she just absolutely hates being held.

It's terrible to say but sometimes when he's holding her up and she gets all "swingy" and ridiculous....sometimes I have to hold in a laugh because she looks so insane. And I feel terrible because Nick is SO annoyed with her by that point.

Her name's Bodhi. We adopted her from a shelter last summer, And she's about a year and a half old now. We were told she's a jack russel boxer mix, but I think she has some pit in her. She whines a lot at night. She loves to play keep away with the ball and is eager to please during training.

All we know is that her name used to be Shelley and her old family treated her well somewhere in Georgia.

I never thought I'd be one of those dog people, but I love my Bodhi-girl. She was already spayed (spade?) when we got her, so she ain't gonna be makin' no babies.

It's pronounced Boh-Dee.

My kitty lost one of her baby teeth - a fang - over the weekend. She hasn't been munching on her dry food much, so we've been feeding her the wet stuff.

And that's when we found out how gaseous she could be XP

Bats are super adorable too, but they don't do well with humans at all. It's fun to run into wild ones, though.

My surname is Engström.. or maybe it's Murray.. who even knows anymore!

Our cat has noticeably farted once in his 12 years. We were all sitting comfortably on the bed, and there is a squeak. The cat suddenly looks upset and runs off. About 3 seconds later we were hit with the most atrocious odor known to man. We quarantined the room for the night.

There was a thunderstorm, which upsets my dog (he barks at every thunder), so I was trying to quiet him down (Boy is sleeping & has been sleeping really badly lately so I didn't want to wake him), so I decided to try putting a shirt on him, a la the Thundershirt (even though he didn't like getting wrapped in a towel last time), and it was actually much easier than I expected (once I got it over his head without him opening his mouth & getting caught). Didn't seem to help with the thunder too much, but he liked the attention. I didn't get a photo though, because it seemed like the sleeves were restricting his legs so I took it off after not too long.

What the hell is wrong with your cats, mine never farted once in his life.

You are a lucky man.

This little lady, Louise, though tiny and cute, had the WORST cat farts on the planet. The bad thing was she kind of thought I was her mom and really liked cuddling me right under my chin (boob cat), especially when I was asleep, and she was silent and extremely deadly. I'd wake up choking and she'd look at me bleary eyed, gave a silent meow, and snuggle closer. I lurved her, but oh my god the farting. UGH. Kittens + wet food = smelliest farts ever.

Granted, neither of my current cats (Kisa and Hobbes) have ever farted in my presence, my old cat/my mom's cat + my mom's other cat (Parker and Hermione respectively) haven't either, and my dearly departed cat (Waffles) only ever did it once. But Louise was not mine, I just watched her for a couple months, and boy she loved farting in my face.

My cat's farts smell awful. And she farts all the time. The worst was something she did for a while, where she'd jump on my desk when I was at the computer, be all cute and cuddly for a few seconds, then let out the nastiest fart and go away, leaving me alone with the smell.

I still maintain she did that on purpose, just to fuck with me. :psyduck:

No, it was a matter of pride, a gift, like a dead mouse.

"See what I made or you?"

Or rather, "Hey, smell this!"

Cat farts have a lot to do with the food they eat, just like people farts. They are obligate carnivores, so anything that goes into their system that isn't meat is probably not going to be fully processed. Which means lots of farts.

what she said was sad, but then, all the rejections she's had, to pretend to be happy could only be idiocy

In other words, "quit buying the cheap stuff"!

Wet food's still nasty, though.

Fart kitten only ate wet food. Non-farting cats all ate dry food, but none of them were ever given "cheap" stuff because they're a bit picky.
