The paperwork from the shelter said he was good with kids, but we suspect it was more like, there were kids in the house who messed with him a lot. He lunged for and nipped a neighborhood kid without any warning while we were out on a walk. He also has not had any successful interactions with our niece. The first time with Angie we are not sure if it should 'count' because it was in the first week we had him, and we've since found that he will do this "I'm not trying to bite you, I just turned my head while my mouth was open and now there's a hand in it" thing sometimes. But taken altogether, and according to the trainer we took him to too, we just don't feel we can trust him enough to be around a baby. Some places we talked to were saying that he "might" be fine because he'll be a family member, but like I said he's just so big. If anything went badly it could happen fast and be really bad.
One of our high school friends is interested in adopting him, so he's going to come down and visit tomorrow. We don't want to put him back into the shelter's kennel if we can avoid it - lots of stress and chances to get sick.
