I went to feed and water a neighbour's cat who (the cat, this is, not the neighbour) I was told was very shy around people he doesn't know. Since he doesn't know me, I was expecting to have him hide under the sofa or something. Nope. Almost as soon I walk in the door, he's on the arm of a chair, trilling at me. I bend down to tickle him behind the ears, and he jumps onto my shoulder, drapes himself around my neck and starts headbutting me and wiping his nose in my ear (ew). Shy, yes?

Oh, and he also jumps onto the counter top to try to eat the food as I tip it out of the packet into his bowl, the greedy oik.

Probably lonely! Cats love company, no matter how much they pretend to disdain it. Paige is most vocal when I walk in after being out for a few hours, and all she wants is some fuss.

Definitely try putting some catnip on Paige's scratching post, and maybe pick her up and run her paws down it, just to show her what it is.

I shall try that - but by coincidence, yesterday she suddenly started scratching the corrugated cardboard! So that is good.

The piggies have had a couple bouts of aggression towards each other in the last couple weeks. I'm worried I'll have to separate them because neutering doesn't change their behaviour but I barely had room for the first cage, nevermind a second, plus the expense of buying double the bedding and stuff for them. Each time it's been during or just after floor time and lasted over an hour. They haven't outright battled but there's a lot of chasing and squealing. One has been chattering their teeth and I've heard a few pained squeals but not seen why they've happened. When I've checked them I don't see any bite marks. I'm hoping I'm worrying too much because I know some squabbling is normal but listening to them upset stresses me out. I'm concerned that they might do each other damage.

Edit: Tonight I tried cleaning their cage after they started and that seemed to calm them down. Dunno if it's messing with the scents or distracts them or just timing coincidence but as long as they are hopefully content right now.

So, I have no pets, but I'm getting paid to watch an 8 year old black lab.  She's cute as hell, sleeps right outside my door, but unfortunately, she isn't trustworthy enough to let off of the lead for play, and she won't walk past her people's (down the street neighbours) garden.  So I guess all I have to do is give her food, water, and take her out in her comfortable range to piss and shit.  Easiest job ever.  Maybe I should spoil her a little by going to Costco to pick up a leg of lamb and make her a special meal.  I*will* post cute critter pics, though.

That is a good point really. I don't think you could quarter a cat with three corners. Not that anyone is going to try.

I now understand what parents mean when they say that they are terrified for their children and have nightmares about all the things that could happen. I love this little cat so much that it sometimes physically hurts to leave her and go out, even just to the shops.

That was what I was thinking.  Either that or an ocelot hybrid, or if I was going down in price, a bengal.

Savannah cats. For a traditional breed... Maine Coons maybe?

I always come up with names for animals in case I ever own one* and if I ever happen across a female maine coon, I am definitely naming her Large Marge. One of my mom's friends has like...7? of them now and they're pretty chill cats, especially compared to my small neurotic fluffball of a cat. But Kisa is so cute! Look at that little face!

Every Maine Coon I've seen has been very much an outdoor cat. While I was in New Hampshire my neighbors had one named Moose. Awesome cat, and roamed the neighbourhood all day. But yeah, I'm wondering specifically about indoor cats. Could a Maine Coon be an indoor cat or would that be mean?

My buddy's Maine Coons are indoor-only, but this is largely because Texas heat and burrs are not good for a long-haired cat.

Hehe a feather just drifted into the flat through the skylight and Paige pounced on it and ate it. Yesterday she was stalking a ball of my loose hair that I'd just taken out of my hairbrush. I'm not sure she'd be great at hunting live prey though... thankfully!

Think of Maine Coons as dogs you don't have to take on walks or take outside. Which kind of defeats the purpose of having a dog, but that's really the only way I can describe what it's like being around them. Very fluffy indoor only dogs that happen to be cats.

Why not?! You could make more cats out of all the shedded fluff!

Then it sounds like you're going to rapidly approach tribble levels of cats.

Had to take Newt to the vet today. She's been getting weak and trembling a lot. They don't think its an infection so it could be some kind of toxin. Getting paranoid that someone has tried to poison my cat.

TSK, that's awful. I really hope it is something curable and non-malicious. It is so horrible to think that people might want to deliberately harm a cat :(

Paige and I are having snuggles and I am reluctant to leave her. I could just work from home - I was meant to be going to the library - but my friend was expecting me to join her. But kitty cuddles.

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."
