Do guinea pigs need their nails trimmed?

Usually, yeah. Unless they live on a surface that wears them down. I took mine to get them done at the vet in the first couples weeks I had them. That was three months ago and they're due another clipping. Actually they were probably due a couple weeks ago because a couple of the nails curl inward on each of them.

I've read a lot about people doing it themselves but I find it easier to have the vet do it.

I don't think my school would appreciate me billing them for nail clippings, so I'll do it myself with the help of a coworker. I have those special scissor-like clippers for my cat and I'll just take them to work with me one day.

Although, a trip to the vet might not hurt. I kind of think she needs a haircut. Her fur is super unruly.

This link has a bunch of helpful information for clipping piggie nails.

Edit: For some reason I use "piggie" for an individual guinea pigs even though the spelling "piggy" exists.

I guess "piggy" sounds pejorative, almost. It's just weird to me to see "piggy/piggie" to refer to a guinea pig and not an actual pig.

It doesn't bother me, but I had lots of kids calling mine "pig" for a while because that's all they get out.

Now anytime they see a picture of a guinea pig, regardless of what it looks like, it's a "Maisy".  :-)

The scissor-ish clippers will definitely be helpful for clipping. Those were the ones we used on Rocko.

I got a sympathy card from the vet yesterday. :-( *Sigh* I miss the little guy a lot. I still haven't dismantled his cage and just threw out his meds yesterday. It was a week ago today that he died.

I think one of the hardest parts to deal with in the coming months is going to be paying off his vet bills. Once a month I'll be reminded of how he was near the end of his life, instead of remembering the happy, chunky piggy we knew and loved. He just wasn't himself at the end and it hurts so much to think about how desperate and helpless I felt.

I'm sorry to hear that. Had a similar experience when my first doggy died and she was ill for the last few months. As time goes on it becomes easier to remember the good times and know you made them feel as happy and loved as you could until and during their last moments.

Eddie, in the photo, does. He comes up to the side of the cage and they sniff each other. Richie is a lot more skittish and I'm not sure he even knows the dog is about most of the time because he likes staying in his hideys.

So this anti-depressant that Kisa is on (for her appetite issues) has made her uncharacteristically affectionate. So affectionate, in fact, that she woke me up several times last night because she was standing on my shoulder and purring directly into my ear. I think I woke up 4 times last night because of my cat staring at me and purring in my face. I love her, but I really would prefer it if she slept at night.

But in regards to her eating issues, she's slowly eating more and more on her own and we've stopped force feeding her. We went away last weekend and I think she got upset and stopped eating, as she lost weight, but she's definitely eating more now than before we left, so that's good. Hopefully soon she'll actually gain some weight.

Anyone have advice about introducing dogs to each other? I'm hoping Pixie will be able to stay with my parents and the family dog, Socks, when we're away in March.

Pixie is quite a nervous dog but she grew up surrounded by dogs so she's cautious but interested in strange ones. She's gradually warmed up to my neighbour's dog so I've seen if the other dog is chill then all is good for Pixie.

Socks hasn't been socialised at all and she's territorial. To me she seems very fearful of other dogs and my family and me are worried that means she could be really aggressive and even bite if she gets close to another dog. She practically squeals if a dog gets close and it's impossible to distract her or calm her down. The dogs have met briefly already, on leashes, and it's gone as expected, Pixie is nervous but interested until Socks freaks the hell out, which then upsets Pixie.

I'm looking up information but any personal stories?

Keep them on task together. We're walking together, we're having an obedience lesson together, etc. this way both dogs are members under your leadership. If you just sort of let them do what they want at introduction, they will proceed to figuring out which one of them is in charge.

The answer needs to be neither, you're in charge

So I went to the local critter shelter today. Their black friday special was name your price on all critters. It was both a disappointing and heartening trip. They were at like 10% capacity. Four dogs, only one of which was adoptable (and another four in the lost and found waiting for owner pick up) four cats (which my roommate uniformly said no too, even the Siamese) three rabbits, a single guinea pig who wasn't friendly, and three rats. So it was disappointing since I got no fuzzy friend of my own, but also quite positive since, you know, the more pets are getting adopted the better.

Siamese are rather noisy.  I wouldn't want one, no matter how pretty they are.  Just get me some sweet random moggy, or if I got money, a Bengal.

Siamese are rather noisy.  I wouldn't want one, no matter how pretty they are.  Just get me some sweet random moggy, or if I got money, a Bengal.

We have a Bengal. He's really fucking loud. Like he's possibly the most laid back cat ever, but he knows how to caterwaul and he does it often. If you don't like loud cats, I would not recommend getting a Bengal.

Yeah my boyfriend's cat is half siamese and extremely loud, she likes to yowl whenever she's not getting enough attention, which is mostly when us humans are asleep. Not cool, cat.

Back when Hobbes was exiled to our porch (he has a problem with peeing on things, but he is inside now because it got cold), he would yowl so loudly that my neighbors could hear him while they were sitting in their living room with the TV on.

And yeah, he yowls at night sometimes, too, which is when he gets things thrown at him if he does it in the bedroom.

Now's the time to post some animal gifs.

"YOU COULD MOVE?"

"Om nom nom"

"Can I get off nao?"

I had much more but it appears that I lost them...
