making out to thrice is an alarming proposition

Digital Sea is pretty goddamn tame. It's pretty much a direct rip-off of Mezzanine and KID A.

That being said, my other mix -- Songs to sod a bitch like a horny landscaping service to -- has plenty heavy fare on it. It's more 3rd date material, though -- apparently some women don't appreciate "making love" to Betrayal is a Symptom or Prison Sex.

Also, I challenge you to stay hard while shagging to Sleepyhead by Passion Pit on repeat. I haven't been able to ...ahem... pull it off yet.

Wouldn't it be awkward to make out to Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley.

You'd be sitting their thinking she was going to suddenly just say, "Oh yeah, I'm a guy."

Cliche in this context implies that it's a mistake to use.

Barry White may or may not be appropriate depending on whether or not you and your partner were born c. 1950 but I doubt that the decision would ever come back to bite you in the ass.

Barry White is always appropriate, imo. It's ecstasy when you lay down next to meee.

Typically when I have girls over they turn out to have a defined musical preference, so I put on some Morphine or old Smashing Pumpkins or even some trance, just something textured and moody. But the other night this girl was an opera singer and so was always too busy listening to stuff she was going to perform to listen to contemporary music. She had no requests at all.

So I threw on From Here to Infirmary. It felt so juvenile but I loved it.

But the other night this girl was an opera singer and so was always too busy listening to stuff she was going to perform

My first wife was an opera singer, and my second is 70% deaf and finds background noise a distraction (as I do anyway).  So for me the idea of a make-out mix at all has the subtext that the occasion could not be serious.

still one of my favorite album covers, ever

How annoying are these people to me, a visual appraisal from left to right:

- His outfit is so ridiculous that I'm just going to assume he's on his way to or returning from a costume party. I'm being generous. He gets a pass, just.
- She's okay, but those shoes are really ugly. What's with clunky sneakers, people? They're like clogs made from more comfortable materials.
- Oh boy. The hat. The rolled up jeans. The fucking hair. It's a three-way race between this kid, the 80s revival doofus in the blue singlet, and that girl in the bear hat.
- I don't know what that thing is around his neck. If it's something important then he could just put it in his pocket like a normal person does. If it's some kind of pendant then it just looks stupid. But in general his appearance is too bland to be truly annoying.
- I'm going to assume she's just a kid. I don't wanna start ripping on kids, that's not cool. If she's not a kid then maybe she should stop dressing like one.
- For fuck's sake. 80s revival blue singlet doofus. Okay let's be generous again and assume he's getting in on the costume party action along with that guy in the skeleton outfit (though on reflection what the hell's with Skeletor's red bandana? What is he, an undead bikie? The skeleton of Jesse James?). This outfit sails much closer to the wind though because unlike Skeletor's it's conceivable that somebody might actually wear this kind of shit every day and think they're being cool or something. (Here's a secret: they're not.)
- The least annoying of the lot, though I think those shoes might actually be clogs. The oversize flower in the hair is a difficult look to pull off and it might be just the overexposure of the photo that's allowing her to get away with it.
- Okay bear hat wins the race to the prize. The prize is derision and scorn. Maybe she'd get away with it if she wasn't also throwing up the most half-hearted peace sign/V-for-victory sign imaginable. Maybe if she was wearing an entire bear costume I might be willing to lump her in with the costume party crowd. As it is she's a girl in a stupid hat for no good reason.

This cover is pretty much a summary of everything that perpetually shits me about hipster/indie culture. (Namely "irony", the mindless worship of trashy pop culture, and the perpetual tendency towards infantilisation.)

The thing is that you are misinterpreting the album cover. I think it is supposed to be an homage to the sort of 'idiosyncratic' characters in John Hughes' films. It's not meant to be ironic.

I've seen all the John Hughes movies worth seeing several times and I can only recognise a Molly Ringwald and an Emilio Estevez in there so I think as a whole the photo can still be encapsulated as

the mindless worship of trashy pop culture

An homage doesn't have to be a direct reference. I just think it was meant in the same spirit.

I don't have any particularly strong feelings for the album cover, but I don't think it is mindless worship so much as it is sincere appreciation, which is quite amply exemplified by the music on the actual album.

Yeah I don't think it's quite fair to call it mindless worship. While it may not be an iconic cover exactly it's directly inspired by a particular cultural artifact, unlike say decade-wide pop nostalgia (let's talk about how great the 80s were, guys!), the sensation of which is carefully sonically recreated.

Oh man I'm glad I didn't cop out of that when I first started dry-heaving at around the 20-second mark otherwise I would've missed the incredible line 37 seconds into the song where he sings "We made love and then you cried".

EDIT: okay now I've somehow listened to the whole thing and instead of reacting to it fully here I'll just be thankful that the crushing obviousness and utter blandness of the song's rendering of otherwise admirable sentiments is aptly summed up by the following comment on the video:

Quote

Let's not be ridiculous, that steel guitar solo in the middle before the key change into the final verses is pretty excellent. Almost makes it worth it.

Almost.

Yeah maybe but it doesn't make up for the fact that the song nearly put me off the mandolin forever. That's a crime I can't excuse.

Also that key change was the most half-arsed, half-hearted key change I've ever heard in a song. Only made worse by being telegraphed from a mile away.

I think the automatic vocal harmonizer in the recording is pretty adorable. A friend of mine has one. When he uses it at gigs, sometimes he forgets to hit the footpedal to bypass the effect, so when he speaks he sounds hella Borg status. It gets your attention for sure.

Correct answer.

Best make out/sex I ever had was to Brant Bjork though. When I was still young enough to just make out it was almost always to the first portished album. Emotional, but some fairly nice bass lines in there for grinding (I believe this is important.)
