Holy fuck, "Viva Last Blues" is 15 years old
« on: 28 Nov 2010, 04:02 »

1995, guys! Jesus Christ.

I was checking it out tonight because something a friend of mine said reminded me of it and there it was, nineteen-ninety-god-damn-five. I can't believe it's so old already. What an awesome album.

Also tonight before making this thread I've had two glasses of champagne, a glass of stout, and a double shot of whisky. Coincidence?

One could argue that there is a, perhaps unconscious, element of in-group/out-group determination, one might say exclusionary elitism, and perhaps even just plain rudeness, in beginning a topic of discussion on a public forum as if it should automatically be assumed that all people should be aware of the thing one is talking about.

Just a thought.

Isn't one of the multitude of Allisoni or Pseudoallisoni pretty young?

'Viva Ultra' and 'Cat's Blues' are favourites as I recall.

Dude, "New Partner". Still one of the most beautiful songs Oldham's written. I still remember the first time I heard the bridge of that, with the lyrical twist that gives the song its name. Really hit me in the gut.

Even though I don't listen to it very much any more Viva Last Blues is still the Palace album I've listened to the most.

Well I wasn't counting Lost Blues and Other Songs just because it's a compilation, but yeah, that one, Viva Last Blues, and the Hope E.P. for me.

The whole "West Palm Beach"/"Gulf Shores"/"(End of) Travelling" triumvirate is extraordinary. As I recall they were all from the Mountain E.P, yes? Plus the song "Lost Blues" gets my heart surging every time Oldham starts really belting the lyrics out. "HOLD THE RAFT AT THE READY, HOLD IT FAST HOLD IT STEADY, FOLLOW THE OCEAN LINE FOLLOW THE FLOW!!"

True story: I was listening to Lost Blues and Other Songs when I wrote the first draft of the first story in my first book.
