Throw France in there and you've got yourself a deal.
What are some other good French DM bands?  I love Peste Noire; the guy fucking terrifies me, so I'm intrigued to know what else is coming from the rest of the country.

Peste Noire is black metal. You can tell this fairly easily because he looks like this:

Suffocation motherfucker!
Definitely check out..Suffocation (old only),
The first two ATG albums are very good. So is SotS.

I sort of need to read more carefully. But I don't think that SotS is bad but I don't seen why there are so many people worship it so much.
Also.... I don't know how old are we talking about with Suffocation because their s/t is DAMN GOOD. Only the latest Oath of Blood was really meh.

Yeah France's stock in trade appears to be black metal or at least black-metal-fusion stuff. Depends on what yr bounds are for what constitutes black metal proper. See also Blut Aus Nord, Deathspell Omega and at the really far end of the spectrum, Alcest and related projects.

Everything Niege has been involved in has been great, so I second the "Alcest and related projects'" statement, as well as Blut Aus Nord. What I love about bands like Deathspell Omega is that they almost avoid classification -  I think they're always somewhere in between death metal and black metal, with some albums leaning more to the death metal side and others to the black metal side.

Either way, I'm not so sure how easy it would be for someone just getting into death metal to listen to Deathspell, haha. Then again, tastes differ so you never know.

Guys, Amon Amarth.
Loud, thick, good full-voiced vocals, some semblance of melody still, mostly decent production values--they are a great starter death metal band.

The LLN made some incredibly interesting music, but I have not heard any bands besides Vlad Tepes, Belketre, and Mutilation that were good

What are some others?  There were others, right?  A friend of mine insists that most all of what came out of that whole scene is shit

oh cool, a thread i can contribute to

there's some good recs in here about older 'classic' death metal bands, but there are also newer 'modern' bands in the genre that are pushing the genre and actually sounding good doing it.

bands like Hour of Penance who have put out two really excellent albums in the last couple years, and the related side-project Fleshgod Apocalypse, which has to be some of the best classical-music influenced tech death I have ever heard.

There is also Decrepit Birth, whose album '..And Time Begins' is considered by m(e) to be a death metal masterpeice. They've since streamlined their sound over the past two albums but they are still worth checking out.

Honestly, pretty much any band on the more death-metal-centric labels like Willowtip and Unique Leader are worth checking out. Go explore.

Willowtip and Unique Leader have been slacking in good shit this year. New Decrepit Birth was terrible, and Fleshgod Apocalypse is just what you would expect it to be from listening to one song. Anything good coming up, though?

The problem for me is that I can't understand the fuzz that imo they don't deserve: It's just raw metal that has been done before (and better) by a bunch of guys who focused way too much (even by black metal standards) on their image and ideology than on the music itself. Trying to be "kult as fukk" but are just" has-beens and never-was". Mütiilation seems like the only one that is ok

Also Mithras godfuckingdamnit.

I always try to get into them but always get the feeling that I want to listen to Morbid Angel instead.

For me Children Of Bodom is like a faster version of Power Metal with harsh vocals and not singing about castles and dragons and that kind of stuff.
Ensiferum... Ummm, Not death anyway but I'm not sure since I don't really listem to them.

Back on topic... Bloodbaths debut (only the debut) is amazing imo. It has a really awesome production that makes me think of really bad horror movies. Fun atmosphere overall, saldy they didn't use this production again and now the music is sort of meh.

Hail Of Bullets and Asphyx both have such a crunchy production that I love... Oh, Immolation is also great, There's some really creepy stuff going on in Close to a World Below. The vocals are insane sometimes.

Nightmares Made Flesh is still a good record, mostly because of the incredible songwriting chops. Outnumbering the Day and Eaten in particular are just so fucking perfect. It may sound somewhat fanboyish to say it but Bloodbath for me died after Swano departed. The Blakkheim/Swano team is a juggernaut that destroys minds and reaps souls (see also Diabolical Masquerade).

For ultrakvltpoints my favourite Bloodbath release overall is probably actually their first EP Breeding Death. Two words:

OMINOUS BLOODVOMIT.

Hell yes.  Swano's pretty spectacular on his own, but this was pretty tops.  I've always been curious as to what the film of Death's Design would have been like.

I have witnessed firsthand some truly hilarious bloodvomit.

On the subject of death metal; Severed Crotch. They are a band that is local to me, I've been going to their shows for a few years now and they just released their debut full length. It is AMAZING. But you don't have to take my word on it, you can stream all of it here. The first track is an instrumental intro, so skip it if you're impatient/giving the band a quick glance.
