K, so like, my 'absolutely-positively-The-One' boyfriend dumped me on Christmas eve and I have discovered that I have no good heartbreak music. I mean I have 'I'm so miserable o god' songs, but I don't wanna listen to sad music that's gonna make me -more sad-, I think I'm pretty damn sad enough. No, I have no good 'You done me wrong you p.o.s.' songs or even 'I done her wrong, I'm so sorry/I screwed up' songs. Frankly I'd much rather feel righteously angry instead of destroyed.

I figure this is as good a place as any to ask for songs like that, since y'all do that. Music, I mean. I'm not much of a music person, my personal CD collection fits in one of those 40 pg travel binders. With pages to spare. But I like good music period, for serious, so it doesn't have to be all indie rock. It can be anything from 80s glam rock to rap to country even, I have no biases as long as the song's full of beautiful raeg.

Help a hurtin' girl out?

Although if this is against forum rules I do apologize...I didn't think it would be such a bad thing to ask ppl I feel know more songs than I do. Plus that's kind of a hard thing to search, apparently...

Angry/Bitter: Shellac's "Prayer to God", Frank Turner's "Worse Things Happen at Sea" (the demo on his First Three Years album is particularly biting), and then a lot of Jawbreaker, particularly 24 Hour Revenge Therapy.
Sad: Nina Nastasia's Run to Ruin or almost anything Arab Strap.
General Excellence: The Mountain Goats Tallahassee, for a reference, just listen to "No Children".
Other suggestions: Okkervil River's Black Sheep Boy, Silkworm's Developer, and the entirety of the Silver Jews discography (once more, not breakup specific but brilliant enough to not matter because enough of it can bring you out of anything)

Grenade by Bruno Mars is a really good breakup song. It might be a little too "you dun me wrong" for your tastes, though.

Anything by The Leo Project would be good, too. I'd recommend their album Every Song Reminds Me.

Righteously angry you say? I'm on it!

Martyrdöd - "Din Aura Av Sorg"

Basically the entire "In Extremis" album is a whirlwind of emotion. Despair, sadness, grief on one side, white-knuckle fury, desperation and chaos on the other. To top it all, there's a tiny dash of "hopeful in the face of adversity" to it. Nevermind if you don't understand Swedish, just fucking feel it.

Nasum - "Shadows"

More crusty Swedish goodness. The lyric "But I'll be here when you are gone, I'll make it through. Through the Storm" says it all really..

Bruno Mars

i hate to be that person but like

why

anyway, seconding the okkervil river, but be careful with that. and also seconding mt. goats. when you're hurting though, sometimes it helps to just find something so undeniably beautiful that it gives you a different reason to cry. for me that was the congress EP by bottomless pit. that did wonders.

oh yes the elvis costello is good too

Good idea Squawk. A good friend of mine got dumped recently and I gave her (a mediaf!re link to) "The World Is Not A Cold Dead Place" and she said it really worked.

Also, Pelican - "Autumn Into Summer"

There is nothing too you-done-me-wrong for my tastes right now. this dbag convinced me we were getting married and having a family and having a home and every secret dream i didn't even dare speak to myself would be reality AND dumped me on christmas when he knew christmas is really hard for me anyway AND doesn't even have the courtesy to also be devastated since he apparently hasn't loved me for a long time i mean really how -rude-
I wouldn't even mind some 'burn in hell you motherfucker' songs if there are any 8DD

But seriously, thanks guys, I really appreciate it! It all sounds really good, I am going to find and download ALL OF EVERYTHING here. I need something to do anyway, hurr.

Elvis Costello is always the answer to this question

Yes indeed.

Fleetwood Mac - The Chain
Colin James - Just Came Back
Reverse the genders on "Fuck You" by Cee-lo Green, maybe?

And hey, I'm really sorry that all this happened to you, especially on Christmas Eve.  I hope you feel better, with or without the help of all these songs.

irony in your mention! - that song is a song that is forever connected to our relationship for me (due to many things that I won't go into here because this is not my soap opera lol) and i heard it in my mp3player rotation sunday and i started crying so hard i almost rear ended a mail truck in front of me
(seriously not picking on you, just wow, crazy coincidence to mention that song)

elvis costello it is!

And I will give those a try too

Thank you, I appreciate that. slowly but surely eh?
the thing I'm finding that's upsetting me the most (atm it changes like a carousel lol)  is that by the time he told me, he said he'd already fallen out of love with me for several months, so it doesn't feel like we're going through the same amount of heartache and it's really petty of me but goddammit, I am devastated and he is possibly over it?
why does he get to be further along the pain cycle eh? he's the one that cut me off when i was still crazy in love. that's not fair.
...actually i think it's jealousy. I would very much like to be over it too.

..ANYWAY, sorry

I don't know if it makes me a lamer or old, I ain't heard of hardly any of these people xD
I'm excited to tho !

People don't talk about this much when they discuss the album, but Sufjan's The Age of Adz is actually a pretty manic and crazy break up album. Especially if you're like me and you're recent Ex was obsessed with Sufjan.

I will DEFINITELY second Converge if you're into heavy shit. This is probably my favorite song of theirs. Different album (split LP with Agoraphobic Nosebleed The Poacher Diaries) but to be honest I like this album more anyway. Jane Doe is great though, I've got a vinyl rip of this from my favorite tracker and it is pretty phenomenal.

Oh hell yes. "Poacher Diaries" is so damn good, but not much of a "Breakup" album. However, it is the most perfect post-apocalyptic sounding album ever. It's just so damn bleak.

Jagged Little Pill is a great album, lifts you up when you're down.

Pantera's "This Love"

Some early blink-182 songs like "Untitled", "Dysentery Gary", and "Going Away to College" work.

Erm...Limp Bizkit's "Significant Other" is great for this as well...

Props to the guy who mentioned Swans, though Gira's other major band Angels Of Light has some great cathartic "love sucks" songs, mixed in with a few soul-crushing "life sucks" songs for good measure. Anything off of their first three LPs will do in a pinch, but "New City In The Future" is probably the most aptly vitriolic...

Wire's "Torch It!" is also great for imagining eviscerating someone. The album it's on (Manscape) is otherwise pretty weak, though.

Seconded on The Age Of Adz, especially the title song. "When it dies... When it dies... It rots."

On the much nastier end, there's always noise, which is usually my first stop when I'm very, very depressed. Prurient's The Black Vase, Throbbing Gristle's Second Annual Report, and Merzbow's Batztoutai With Material Gadgets and Cycle are all highly recommended for the purposes of pretending that you don't exist for a while. It's very cathartic and soothing.

And here is something completely different: a mix I did two and a half years ago for Tommy's Summer Mix thread.  The theme in the back of my mind as I did it was "love found, enjoyed and lost", but the loss element is represented more by regret than anger.  Half the mix is classical, concentrated at the start - so poke through towards the end if this turns you off.

(mediafyre was playing up when I uploaded this again, so let me know if you have a problem with it)
