In about 1989 the pianist Aki Takahashi commissioned arrangements of Beatles songs from 47 contemporary composers, including John Cage.  The project led to four Japanese CDs, of which I got the first easily (it's relatively common, because it was issued in the US as well as Japan), the second simply cannot be found now by any means (I'm not saying how I come to have a rip), and the third and fourth I had to get copies shipped from Japan.

Volume 1:
Code: [Select]

* In this piece, first the tune is played while being recorded on a cassette recorder, then the recording is rewound and played back through a loudspeaker inside a teapot whose lid is periodically opened and shut.  Watch and listen to it played by Steven Speciale.

For Volumes 3 and 4 the series catch-phrase was changed to "Hyper Music from Lennon & McCartney", and the disks got individual titles.

To the guy who uploaded the new La Dispute album - well done, that shit is AMAZING - but why on earth would you not link to "King Park" as a taster?  Easily the best and most affecting song I've heard this year.

Quote from: RS
White Denim spit psychedelia, hard blues, boogie, prog rock and fusion riffs like inspired kids weaned on 64GB iPods and 64-ounce Slurpees. The challenge has been feng shui, which they nail on this 37-minute LP. There are countless touchstones, but the sublime attack often recalls late-Sixties Grateful Dead, when their songs still had garage-rock drive but were exploding every which way.

Earth & Fire - Earth & Fire [1970]

Great debut album..alittle less proggy than their later stuff, but still very warm and melodic.

Quote
Earth and Fire were a progressive rock group formed in the Netherlands by brothers Chris and Gerard Koerts. Most popular in the 1970s, Earth and Fire came to produce many chart topping hits in the Dutch pop scene. Though they experienced success in the Netherlands, their music never quite made it to England or the Americas.

It's the most horrible time of the year!
A Very Scary Solstice finally merges the wonderful tradition of merry holiday carolling with the cosmic horror of the Cthulhu Mythos. The result is a CD and sing-along songbook that features twenty five holiday favorites infused with a liberal dose of madness, horror and otherworldly blasphemies.

The CD features a cast of professional singers with each number beautifully arranged and fully orchestrated. Styles range from the classical to contemporary to nostaligic and just plain weird.

We wish you a scary solstice!
An Even Scarier Solstice is a sequel to our strangely popular A Very Scary Solstice. This year we've assembled better musicians, more singers, and 21 new songs of holiday horror.

The CD features a cast of more than 30 professional singers with each number beautifully arranged and fully orchestrated by Troy Sterling Nies (composer for the HPLHS film The Call of Cthulhu). Styles range from rockabilly to middle-eastern to grandly gothic and just plain weird. We've even set Lovecraft's poem, "A Brumalian Wish" to music to create (we think) the world's first original Lovecraftian Christmas carol.

Both albums can be found at the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society for purchase with caroling books! http://www.cthulhulives.org/store/store.lasso

The new Black Keys doesn't suck, but it is kind of unnecessarily overproduced and cluttered and less raw-bluesy, IMO.  Not as good as their first few albums, but still good.

EDIT: Also, I'll probably upload some stuff later today. Raleigh Moncrief, Baxter Dury, Co La, some bandcamp stuff maybe.

Auerbach and Carney never should've stopped recording in their basements/abandoned factories. Rubber Factory was brilliant. They haven't done anything half as good since. El Camino is better than their previous one at least.

I've been loving this album here lately. Probably because i'm such an utter failure romantically.

"Another Sunny Day was a project for the former The Field Mice, The Hit Parade, Blueboy and now occasional Trembling Blue Stars member, Harvey Williams. The multi-instrumentalist Williams released a series of singles through Sarah Records and these were collected on the album London Weekend. Twenty years on, Another Sunny Day seem to epitomise the Sarah sound: a vulnerable, poignant puree of teenage angst and 60s-tinged melodies, reminiscent of The Pastels or Television Personalities."

Raw Music International: Kisumu, Kenya

Compilation of underground music recorded in Kenya.  Ranging from ancient traditional sounds to reggae to modern hip-hop, the comp focuses on new, innovative, or overlooked music.  We get a lot of cutting edge and exciting music from the west on this board, so check out what our peers are up to around the world.

Recorded for the new TV show Raw Music International--featuring overlooked music scenes in foreign countries on each episode.  For more info check out http://www.rawmusicinternational.com.  (Heads up, the album is "name your own price" aka free for this week as a promotion, but after a week it will be $3 to help support the artists involved. Check it and spread the word!).

Mikal Cronin - s/t (2011, Trouble in Mind) (garage/power-pop/psychedelic)

Code: [Select]
http://www.m/f.com/?bpb4h8uqp6b1at7

Quote from:  p4k
On his eponymous debut, Mikal Cronin proves he can hold his own. It's an album of wistful, psychedelic pop that pits lush and layered arrangements against needle-pinning power chords. Like Segall's latest, Goodbye Bread, Cronin's solo turn finds him dialing back his thrashier impulses in order to clear space for singer-songwriter-style introspection.

But when the curtain of lysergic gristle is pulled aside, it turns out that they're not the same person, after all. Even when he goes all Neil Young, Segall still retains an affable beach-dude demeanor. Cronin turns out to be the more vulnerable voice-- Elliott Smith in throwback dress, minus the self-loathing. And, like Smith, he has an ear for arrangements.

I'm a little skeptical. Everytime someone's said a band had shoegaze and black metal elements, they've ended up sounding nothing like either of the two, and mostly like crap.

That Mikel Cronin album though..took a couple songs to get going, but it's very good.

Admittedly their black metal elements aren't always very prominent. (and the first song on that album is really boring)

Rustie - Glass Swords (2011) [post-dubstep/retro-rave]
Code: [Select]
http://www.M/F.com/?d4kydmcr4g53r3w

Quote from: p4k
Like the new wave of take-rave-back-to-the-kids producers, Rustie is also fearless about rehabilitating and reinventing the genre's cheesiest and most pleasurable moments, the stuff dubstep's more glower-prone producers wouldn't even claim as being part of the genre's DNA...[he] is operating in a world where radio producers have already plundered dubstep for fresh sounds, and as if knowing he's now competing as much with Billboard hit-makers, his tracks have the maximalist zeal of Max Martin bubblegum...He shares the make-it-immediate urge of Deadmau5 and his ilk but has no time for their simplicity or brutality. One of the best things about Glass Swords is that, for all of its pop-goes-clubbing bluster, it's also as psychedelic, where the devil's in the zillion little details zigzagging across the tracks-- as you'd expect from a Warp album-- whether we're talking their classic-era IDM records or more recent signings like Flying Lotus.

Andy Stott - We Stay Together EP (2011) [experimental/techno)

Code: [Select]
http://www.M/F.com/?m8un3dz4lyhhhg2

Quote from: Resident Advisor
This is minutely stratified music. It might be lo-fi, but it's not the kind that obscures; Stott's rough textures merely blur the lines between the elements. This dynamic turns a fairly straightforward techno thumper like "Bad Wires" into a heaving mass of gravelly shakers and dust-eaten drums, and the otherwise funky "Cherry Eye" into a swirling watercolour punctured by an unforgiving kickdrum. We get a glimmer of hope with the title track, based around a mercilessly phased sample, but it's unceremoniously stomped out by the hellish closer "Cracked."

I've spent a lot of time this year complaining about the complacency of dub techno, pondering its inevitable death as a viable genre. But maybe these burning doldrums are a good place to be, because the trickery that Andy Stott is performing on the genre's corpse is as morbidly exciting as the foreboding beats he carves out of prehistoric stone.

Meanwhile, here is another performer playing several of the pieces from that set (including some from the disk not uploaded yet), plus a couple of other transcriptions by her brother, and an unrelated piece written for the pianist.

But the disk starts with Paul McCartney's second serious essay in a classical music form (after the Liverpool Oratorio), which is a piano piece called "A Leaf".  This has become better known in a later orchestral version, but here it is as originally written.

A Leaf (Chitose Okashiro)

1   Paul McCartney - A Leaf
2   Frederic Rzewski - Short Fantasy on "Give Peace a Chance"
3   Ichizo Okashiro - Hey Jude
4   Toru Takemitsu - Golden Slumbers
5   Barbara Monk-Feldman - Michelle
6   Ichizo Okashiro - Yesterday
7   Ryuichi Sakamoto - Aki 2.2 (Magical Mystery Tour)
8   Michel Block - "billet doux" (for Chitose Okashiro)

Rules:

The first rule of this thread is you do not mention MF.  I am doing this because we are currently the first hit for the full version of "MF thread" on Google, so y'know, that's bad n' shit.

The second rule is don't talk about the MF thread.

No hot-linking images or albums. You can re-host images at http://imageshack.us.

Ensure your tags are correct and that you have specified both Artist/Album in your post.

Upload your files in either a .zip or a .rar archive to MF, in multiple parts if the album is over 200mb. The reason for this is that we know MF is safe and efficient and allows multiple downloads. The ads on other sites, such as Sendspace, are known to contain viruses on the page. Get yourself checked out.

Post your link using code tags. It's the # icon above the policeman emoticon. This prevents the links from being traced back to the forums, lowering the chance that the wrong people notice the thread, potentially threatening Jeph with legal action.

Also, please do NOT request albums. This includes requests for re-uploads; if you miss it, try looking for it somewhere else.

Repost the rules at the top of each new page

Miami graphic designer Scott Hansen returns from a very, very long hiatus to release his second LP of shimmering electronica. Is there any way to describe the music of Tycho other than ‘shimmering’? Not really...The Tycho sound is one of pink sunsets, shuffling hipsters and old video hardware - basically Boards of Canada washed up on the shores of San Francisco. It’s also irresistibly good, which might explain why Hansen hasn’t dared mess with the formula that won him so many accolades back in 2004.

Hey guys it's been a while, but I really wanted to share something with you all.

Arbiter - Colossus [2010]

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?qmwvk1y71ofcbw8
Arbiter is kind of self described as nerdy metal.  Don't let that mislead you, though, because these guys tear things up.  Basically they plan on putting out concept albums that have fairly large, sprawling back-stories to them in order to create an interesting environment.  Arbiter hails from Northern Michigan and just signed to Famined Records and are planning a release in the very near future.

What band is better at raunchy, unpretentious soul&blues-based rock n roll (with a sense of humor)?

The Pack A.D.  No question.
