Jumping on the Avatar love train. Just started watching last week and am halfway through Book 2. It really is a great show; my uncle told he me he really dug it like 4 years ago when his daughters were watching it and I thought it looked lame. My friend made me watch Sozin's Comet one day and I instantly regretted ever having those thoughts. When I get the chance I'm definitely picking up the DVDs.

It also kind of underlined how little I actually enjoy anime as a whole. Out of everything I've watched, I've only enjoyed this, some of the Miyazaki movies and Dead Leaves. I haven't seen a lot of Japanese stuff, but I've seen a few episodes of Fullmetal Alchemist, a LOT of Rurouni Kenshin, and a smattering of others and not really dug it at all. Maybe it's having them being written with English as the native language, or maybe it's that they're on either end of the 'batshit insanely unrealistic vs. pretty believable with some added fantastical elements added' spectrum.

Since nobody mentioned it, currently airing is Puella Magi Madoka Magica. It combines the standard magical girl formula with an interesting story and Shinbo's artgasms. As far as I know the most discussed anime right now. There is lots of delicious architecture with glass everywhere and the monsters look nightmarish. I recommend watching the first three episodes at least, since that's where the big discussions began. Some screenshots from episode 1:

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Bakemonogatari are my most favourite things ever but for the most part SHAFT is a bit hit or miss. I'll definitely check out Puella Magi Madoka Magica, looks interesting.

Another anime of this season that is very recommendable: Level E. The prince of Dogura and three of his underlings come to earth. He does stuff, they have to find a way to live with it. It's a comedy and all in short arcs. To get a taste, the first arc is three episodes. The conclusion of that was one of the greatest laughfests I've experienced in a long time.

i really didnt understand the first episode of the show where you have that Kyubey, i am not sure this is my type of thing.

But i did also have a look a Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and i liked it too. Oh i forgot FLCL, weird but fun.

You guys helped me survived my lack of of anime but i think i'm going to relapse soon lol!

Happens a lot, they lost the spirit they had in the anime, they just made a hollywood movie...

I pretty much saw everything you guys suggested to me. Last animes i saw were, Xam'd and Durarara i liked them both.

But now i dont know what to watch, i am still following Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka, but 1 episode a week is killing me.

A friend once lent me what he described as essentially the first couple arcs of the Gantz manga, and I wouldn't recommend them. That goes double if you're like me and aren't really a fan of the stereotypical angst/fanservice/gore trifecta that those of us born prior to 1985 tend to associate with any anime/manga other than Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball or Speed Racer.* What little I read of it kinda went like this: Angst, gore, tits, angst, gore, dude fucks Lara Croft look-a-like for no reason, angst, gore, angst, fin. It had a nicely claustrophobic/surreal tone to it and the characters acted suitably desperate, but overall I just felt like the interesting bits (Namely, wtf IS Gantz, anyway?) weren't going to be explored by the author any time soon and in the meantime everything else was a slog.

*Admittedly, this is quite often an unfair generalization but even so it isn't going to be series like Gantz that changes the perception.

Super Robot Wars: The Inspector (much better than Divine Wars, but still was....lacking in areas)
Fairy Tail (manga only)
666 Satan (decent, but not the best; will take it over Naruto any day of the week, though)
Gundam Sousei (If you liked Legend of Koizumi, you'll like this one)

Starting watching the X-Men anime. All I can say is that Cyclops is....a lot like himself in the comics. Angsty and useless. Thankfully, Beast and Logan are entertaining, especially Hank.

Yes. It's airing this season. The team is as follows:

Wolverine
Cyclops
Storm
Beast
Armor (a newer character in the comics. Getting the top billing due to being Japanese)
Emma Frost (possibly joining or at least having a big role)

The villains seem to be the U-Men and the Hellfire Club.

I thought Iron Man started out okay and Wolverine was shit from the beginning? X-Men is better than both so far, but it's only been two episodes. Also iirc there will be a Blade anime after that. Not a comic adaption but similar in tone and setting is Tiger and Bunny, which is better than all of the aforementioned.

T&B was kinda meh for the first episode, but in the second episode they focus on Tiger and actually do something with him. I also like that none of the main characters is under 20, doesn't happen too often. It's still not perfect, but much better.

The CGI series is not that bad either. I personally recommend the episode "Rookies" very much to anyone who wants to check the series out. It may be a Jedi-lite episode, but it is something that the Star Wars universe seriously has lacked, focus on the grunt soldiers doing what they can to fight a war. It's also impressive on the technical side simply because the episode is one guy voicing multiple Clone Troopers and still manages to give each Trooper a personality.

As to your statement, satsu...it's the Samuel L. Jackson effect. That's probably why Mace never spoke in that short. One word from his mouth would have been like taking a proton torpedo to the face for the droids.

Yeah I mean there was a point in that episode where Windu just narrows his eyes at the big giant several-hundred-feet-tall stomping machine and you just know he'll be solely responsible for it crashing and burning into carbonized smithereens by the end of the episode.

Both the drawn and rendered series are great because they do have a degree of focus on the clones as well as the Jedi, and shows how important the Wars are to the saga. Although I mainly referenced the drawn series here because 1. someone mentioned Samurai Jack an age back in this thread and 2. it's kinda-sorta hand-drawn animated stuff which is kinda-sorta relevant to the topic :p

The X-men anime may be good, but do not under any circumstances read the X-men Manga, even though it does have some funny reinterpretations of the X-men.

The Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars will always hold a place in my heart as the most awesome cartoon ever. Wonderful story telling with little to no speaking, with constant action. It's a shame they threw him under the bus with Sym-bionic Titan.

The complete lack of any mention of the more recent run of the Hellsing "Ultimate" OVA series in this thread saddens me. Is it because the series is in production hell right now and nothing new is coming out just as the series is about to get into truly awesome territory (I want to see Dracula vs. Nazi hordes, damnit).

For those that haven't seen it, the newer Hellsing series is basically the manga converted over to video form. For those that haven't read the manga, imagine a series where Dracula is a slave to the descendants of the people that defeated him in the Bram Stoker novel, running around murdering younger vampires and generally bored out of his gourd because he wants to be allowed to die and nothing he's run across is powerful enough to kill him (and his compulsions won't allow him to sit back and let something kill him, either).

The series basically gets more and more ludicrous as it goes along, something finally happens to give Dracula a taste of what he thinks he wants and the series ends with a *50 years later* time gap (Dracula showing up again to pay a visit to his former master, utterly exhausted but apparently looking like he'd prefer to exist rather than face the oblivion he got a taste of, and re-enlisting or whatever).

Yeah, I think Geneon is going through some rough times now. I mean, even Funimation (who has the license to the OVA) hasn't done much either.

That was because the anime series overtook the manga and had to make up an original ending. They also stripped out all of the humor for no reason whatsoever.

I must add, though, that Yasushi Ishii gave the anime series a killer soundtrack that the Ultimate OVAs haven't held a candle to so far.

I honestly don't miss the original series soundtrack at all and enjoy the new series on pretty much every level a lot more than the old one.

I mean, it's basically everything enjoyable about the original series cranked up to 11.

I still have a degree of nostalgia for the original Hellsing anime series. It's what got me into Hellsing after all; I first saw it before there was an official English translation. From what I remember, the anime recieved an english translation before the manga as well.

Recently I've been reading Franken Fran. It's pretty great.

The anime series is a lot more subdued and atmospheric than the OVA. Partly this was because of the apparently limited animation budget and partly because of the score, but also it was because of a quite interesting shift in the perspective. Seras is the central character of the original anime, rather than Alucard, and the process of her becoming a vampire is the main plot thread. It all goes to shit in the second half though, because whoever continued the story had not grokked the style of Hellsing at all, and fucked everything up (from character design onwards). Although following the manga point by point is good the beginning of the manga is a bit rushed in terms of exposition. Style and atmosphere are basically the whole point of Hellsing though; it's all about the sheer 'rule of cool' factor, and it's unique feel and recurrent, almost fetishistic visual themes (eyes concealed behind reflective glasses, white gloves, etc.).

Thing is, with Hellsing, unlike any other anime/manga franchise, I am a complete fanboy. I own every single Hellsing related thing that exists: OSTs on CD, all issues of the manga, all DVDs. I've even read Dawn, for fucks sake. As I said, I got into Hellsing way way back in 2002, downloading fanlations of the original anime off of Kazaa. I've cosplayed as Father Anderson, made AMVs, written fan-fiction, the works (all of this back when I was 14-15). It can't really do any wrong in my mind; but I will admit, I notice its flaws and quirks whenever I intriduce people to it. I wil say, with the plot, you shouldn't really judge until you get into at least Manga/OVA 5/6. Kouta Hirano wasn't expecting the series to be popular or successful and it evolved a lot. Once Das Millenium get on the scene it picks up a lot.

Yeah, that's kind of what I was getting at. The Ultimate OVA series doesn't truly begin to shine until you get past the point where the plotline between it and the original series break off and go in completely different directions.

Seras still plays a pretty big role in the new series, what with how insanely powerful she gets once she finally breaks down and feeds and all (I couldn't wait for the DVDs, had to youtube some subs of the OVAs currently available in Japan). Plus the Werewolf and the whole plot twist with Walter, etc.

Yeah, once the Hellsing Organisation is being attacked and gets tasked to solely fight against Millenium (with the Geese), the story, pacing and plot (as well as Seras) zooms off like a motherfucker.

In the anime, though, there's just some big demonic thing who's out to get Alucard, and they have a big demonic showdown in the streets of London. Okay.

Also it is of some note that Kouta Hirano had (as a few established mangakas are) previously been a porn artist, and so the fetishistic visual design is pretty signature of him. It is much more prevalent in the Ultimates than in the series, for better or for worse.
