Also it is of some note that Kouta Hirano had (as a few established mangakas are) previously been a porn artist, and so the fetishistic visual design is pretty signature of him. It is much more prevalent in the Ultimates than in the series, for better or for worse.
And, a good portion of the cast of Hellsing came from those hentai doujinshi that Hirano drew early on. The only ones I can think of that did not (off the top of my head) were: the people from Iscariot (excluding Anderson, who did come from one of those doujinshi), the Convention of Twelve, and a few Millenium members (Zorin, Tubalacain, Shrodinger, and the Captain).

Man I keep going back to watch Trigun on HD Remastered DVD and I honestly haven't found an anime both shamelessly comedic and ridiculously profound in one sitting in the way Trigun is.

I'm going to batter back at you sir and refer you to the post above your own. FLCL is all this, and it does it in six episodes.

Although I quite like Trigun, I kind've take issue with it's crazily inconsistent tone. More opinion maybe at a later date!

Now and Then, Here and There had a few scattered bits of hilarity in the crushing depression throughout it.

See also: The Rebuild of Evangelion DVDs that are going on. I just watched the second one and they're already up to Unit 01 sprouting wings and fucking everything up around the world.

Lots and lots of good stuff here.  Samurai Jack is just simply amazing.  There is no getting around that.  I remember when it came out, and watching how they created it, and listening to what they had in mind, and then watching with awe as they far surpassed anything they had described.

Avatar: the Last Airbender - again, so good.  I was hooked from the very first episode, and it just got better in terms of story and character development as it continued.

I do like the Evangelion Movies 1.11 and 2.22 - But to be honest, I'm not sure what it is that I like.  It's kind of crazy, how I enjoy these without really understanding why.

I'm currently watching Ergo Proxy, and I'm having pretty good fun with that.

Hellsing...  I have to say that I'll probably go against all the arguments here, and say - I like ALL of the Hellsing stuff I've seen.  I have the original episodes from waaaay back - I love the New OVA, and I've read the Manga, and I honestly just can't get enough.

I have wanted to watch Trigun for a while now, and I have the time and the means to acquire this...  So thank you for reminding me of that.

Akira was the first exposure I ever got to Anime - that led me to Golgo 13, and then Vampire Hunter D...  From then on, I've tried to find more and more...  I seem to remember something called M.D. Geist.

HLCL sounds intriguing too.

Gah, head's spinning now.

Unless someone has mentioned it before, Makoto Shinkai's works are usually works of anime purity.

Voices of a Distant Star made me cry when I was a kid. First anime to do that.

The voice acting is also hilariously terrible. Wait, no, the writing is also hilariously terrible.
This makes it so much better though because it looks so good.

Please, it is animation based on a manga, there is literally no way you can say it isn't anime.

How exactly you define anime in cases like that can be an interesting question. The word anime is used in Japanese to describe all animation, I believe, and I have always taken it personally to refer simply to all animation produced in Japan. There is no doubt that anime has also come to refer mainly to a specific style or group of styles however.

Incidentally, and slightly related, some dude at a convention once told me that the proper proununciation of anime is 'an-ee-me' rather than 'an-ee-may'. Anyone know if this is correct. I have advanced pedantic wanker syndrome and like to pronounce foreign loan words correctly, sometimes even putting on a slight accent to really get a lovely schadenfreude or smorgasbord or whatnot. Of course I guess I could just pronounce anime as in the French 'dessin anime', which I believe is where the Japanese take the term from anyway.

Anyway, that Franken Fran manga I was talking about earlier. It's really fantastic. I would describe it, improbably, as a light guro comedy, somewhere between the more comedic parts of the work of Shintaro Kago and Masamune Shirow. There's lots of body horror and some nudity but it generally avoids the really explicit sexual violence stuff you often find in the guro genre. Still totally NSFW and probably NS for normal people as well. Basic description: Our main character, Fran Madaraki is a polite, charming, slightly ditzy revenant, apparently stitched together from corpses by a mysterious scientist who is heavily implied to have been a major force behind Unit 731, as well as possibly being immortal. She is a supernaturally gifted surgeon: She will never allow a patient to die if she can help it, and she will always do what the customer wants. She also believes powerfully and naievely in true love. From these three things emerge some pretty nasty horror and pitch black comedy. Generally, Fran unknowingly acts as an agent of karmic justice. For example, in the first volume, a rich businessman leaves 90% of his estate to his playboy grandchild. The father, who has been skipped over in the inheritance, has his own son murdered, then asks Fran to bring him back to live, thinking she will create an emotionless, pliant zombie. Stirred by the powerful love of a father who will do anything to bring his dead son back to life, Fran puts the businessman under anesthetic, carves out half his brain, installs his sons brain in his skull and attaches his dead sons face (the son remembers exactly who had him killed) to the back of his own head, with a modification made to his neck so that it can swivel around 270 degrees, allowing the two faces to take alternating control of the body. Hilarity ensues!

This is actually just a claim. Like most pop culture words, they appear from no single discernible source. The term appeared in the 70's as a Japanese cultural abbreviation for the word anime, sure. But claiming that it comes from the French word dessin animé is merely a claim. There is little proven truth in this, which is more of a logical leap than a conclusion.

So, my local library decided to show some anime series (all from Funimation's stock). Last night was Trigun. God I forgot how zany that show was in its earlier episodes.

I think it's partially because it also stylistically followed the pattern of Trigun Maximum's very seinen-like transition, especially when Vash really gets into confronting the Gung-Ho Guns. To be honest, besides the Nebraska Family -> BDN, both the anime and manga tended to be a series of comedic sideshows that a lot of viewers today would think of as just a whole lot of filler.

But once Vash is really railroaded into confronting his pacifism, as well as exploring who the hell Knives actually was, there's much, much less comedy to be found.

I'm finding myself ridiculously drawn into Cromartie High School despite that it's on an entirely unique level of batshit insane I've seen in anime so far

Also, I watched Batman: Gotham Knight a while back and was moderately pleased with the animation work by the big studios.

It's called Gundam AGE which sounds so toyetic it's insane. It involves 3 generations of a family using...cards or figures of Gundams, IIRC....to battle an alien invasion. Seeing as how 00 handled aliens so smoothly (read: piledrived it into our faces at breakneck speeds in the movie)....I'm way too hesitant on AGE being a successful series. Although, Level 5 (the people behind the Professor Layton series) are invovled, so that does make me a little interested.

There's supposedly a second announcement related to Gundam on the 25th of this month. Not much else on what that's about, though.

So a mixture of Gundam and YuGiOh or Cardcaptor Sakura or whatever card animes?

Guess I'll just stick with the Rebuild of Evangelion for my giant mecha fix.

My copy of 2.22 arrived last Monday (only just released in the UK).  There appears to be no hint of when part 3 will arrive though, let alone part 4 - years, it seems.

Tiger & Bunny (fairly funny)

I also liked Soul Eater (obviously >.>), Bakuman, K-On, Dragon Drive, Ouran High School Host Club, and the original Dragonball. I need to expand my anime tastes, though.

I finally got around to watching FLCL (was $11 on iTunes for the entire thing, vs. $30+ on DVD anywhere else).

I think I need to see more anime series to get all of the jokes, because I only actually laughed at maybe one or two things any given episode and the entire thing is billed as a parody of all other anime that was out at the time.

Can anyone give me an explanation of what the hell Elfen Lied is about? I get the idea and themes of social alienation, prejudice, abuse and the value of humanity and all that jazz...but I just don't think it's a particularly good anime. Maybe I'm missing something because all I see is how the animators love the incredibly over-the-top graphic violence, hearing very mediocre voice acting and an ending that isn't even satisfactory. I mean, Evangelion gave us a unsatisfactory ending with both the show AND the movie but at least the latter was overwhelming pretty and artistic...

I think Elfen Lied is more about pathos than anything else. If you buy into the tragedy of the main characters, than it drags your heartstrings along for the ride.

If you don't find the characters appealing, you won't like the show ever.

Also, here's to hoping that Rebuild of Evangelion has a good ending (it already has art miles ahead of the original series).

I'm hoping for a nice ending but I'm afraid that if we do get it, it'll just look like bad fanfiction. But who knows, we might. The manga for NGE has already diverged at the point of EoE with Shinji rescuing Asuka from the MP Evangelion units so...

Started Endless Eight and I'm about half-way there. I know I can just skip to the last episode of this arc but just like Kyon, I keep finding myself doing nothing to change it and keep going through with the other Endless Eight episodes (at least there's some consolation that I don't have to watch the loop over 10,000+ times).

Going through the Endless Eight part has the same entertainment value as watching someone paint a patch of drywall several times with slightly different shades of paint

Sure, it's interesting that they did it, but there's only so many ways you can appreciate the value of paint on drywall

as an aside, the Haruhi-chan series is pretty gold comedy.

I think it had a lot more of an impact watching it while it was still airing.

At a friend's request, I've tried watching some episodes of that Panty & Stocking show. Now, maybe I'm too early in to judge, but it honestly seems pretty detestable to me. Any opinions to the contrary?

I tried the first episode. Seeing the poop/toilet humor just turned me off from it.

At last check Nichijou was still going and also Sket Dance. I am however sad to see that Ore No Imouto has ended.

Dude, I love Sket Dance.

Also, we just tried Hayate Butler/"Hayate no Gotoku!" and I actually like it thus far.
