At a friend's request, I've tried watching some episodes of that Panty & Stocking show. Now, maybe I'm too early in to judge, but it honestly seems pretty detestable to me. Any opinions to the contrary?
if you can't stand immature humor don't bother with it. That said I enjoyed it a lot

Also hey I watched Ghost in The Shell for the first time yesterday. The amount of influence it had on the matrix is a little nuts

Going through the Endless Eight part has the same entertainment value as watching someone paint a patch of drywall several times with slightly different shades of paint

Sure, it's interesting that they did it, but there's only so many ways you can appreciate the value of paint on drywall

as an aside, the Haruhi-chan series is pretty gold comedy.

lol it's that bad?

Also anyone know where bleach is going to go since ichigo completely lost his powers as a Soul Reaper?

PS: If you could take 2min of your time to vote for a developpement project in India that my friend is working on. If they get enough votes they will have the fundings they require.

have you seen the series, Stand Alone Complex?

if you haven't, do it asap. You are in for a treat because it's one of the best things that's ever been serialized. so much better than the movie.

I saw it in the store but the movie was $20 cheaper. Next time I head down in that direction I guess.

That entire episode was pretty heartbreaking.  Between
(click to show/hide)
it was pretty emotional.

Should I read the Mirai Nikki manga before watching it?

I just watched the first episode of Mawaru and i'm pretty lost i must say lol.

Anyhow, anyone know about the revamped Evangelion. I'm lost in the versions 1.11 and others. I think i saw 1.11, i guess the second is 2.22 but is there a third or something in between?

I also see on the net, version 1.0 and 2.0. I don't know which one is the revamped one or are they the same?

Evangelion 1.11 and 2.22 are the DVD and Bluray releases of 1.0 and 2.0 - they are just slightly different from the original cinematic releases - e.g. 1.11 has 3 minutes extra animation, mostly early on in the film.  There are also 1.01 and 2.02 cinematic versions which confuse things further.  1.0 (or 1.01, I don't know) was released on DVD before 1.11 arrived, but 2.0[2] was not released on home media.

3.0 and 4.0 have been continuously pushed back from an earlier date of 2008 for both of them, and there has been speculation that the series might be abandoned; a discussion after the theatrical release of 2.02 suggested that 3.0 and 4.0 will be combined into a single film, and the latest announcement (in Aug 2011) gave a tentative release date for 3.0 in autumn of 2012 though without confirming the single film remark.

Evangelion is one of those classic anime that I've never gotten around to watching.  Should I just watch the original series or?

I jumped head-first into things (Death --> EoE --> NGE --> Rebuild)

I did that, too; I was first drawn into it (not being a thing I'd naturally be aware of) by videos of Komm süsser Tod which piqued my interest.  But watching the series through first probably makes more sense, rather than starting with alternative endings.

Thank you, i feel less confused now. So 2.02 is still not yet release and 1.01 and 2.02 are Bluray releases aswell?

Re: Anime anyone?

My understanding is:

1.0 Film
1.01 DVD, with minor adjustments, packaged with some frames of film (no longer available)
1.11 Bluray and DVD, retransferred, and extra animation.
2.0 Film
2.02 Japanese TV transmission, actually 2.0
2.22 Bluray and DVD, with adjustments

There is further complication from the fact that the rights to issue the DVD/Bluray are sold to different companies in different countries.  This leads to a range of different release dates, different extras, and even the DVD packages having one disk in some territories and two disks in other territories - also completely different package appearances - e.g. my UK DVD of 2.22 has a scene from the film as the cover; but I also have (don't ask!) an Italian copy which was issued over six months earlier and has a solid orange cover.

One can just feel the likelihood of 3.33 and 4.44 coming along in due course!

If you're starting from scratch, you're looking at ~ 679 hours of nonstop anime. ~29 straight days.
....
Oh god, I have spent at least 29 straight days watching anime...

Any preferred genres? I can watch almost anything, so if you have a favorite type of anime, I should be able to narrow the list down for you :P

I've had so much free time lately I actually finished watching all of Eva (NGE + EoE + Rebuild) and now I'm excited for the rest of Rebuild.  I don't think I've ever been this attached to characters I don't really like.

I don't think i have a prefered genre, only if it's good. Maybe the least  i like is ''slice of life''. Also, i prefer more mature animes. Not talking about hentai.

I already watch a nice bunch from your list. Now though, i am a bit busy with the midterms but i will surely come back to this awsome big list you provided.

If you're gonna watch Paprika give Tokyo Godfathers as well. Same guy, wildly different topics, still fantastic

I probably will. I have heard of both of them, and critics are good. Recently i watched Howl's Moving Castle and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, i really wasn't expecting that kind of story or theme for Howl's. I just recently started watching anime movies. So Miyazaki was a first for me.

I know how it is lol. I've already watched twice all the bleach episodes.

Why would you subject yourself to watching all of the Bleach episodes twice? Seriously, why? I like the manga and series itself but not so much that I will actually watch all of them TWICE.

Well when i didn't have anything else to watch, i had the idea of re-watching bleach series. I guess i like it enough to re-watch it. This is a point where i watched every possible thing people suggested me so i re-watch things that i have not seen in a long time.

Well ,if you don't mind subs, I'd go with these:
Clannad (Emotional Rollercoaster)
Sacred Seven (Anime Megaman)
XXXHolic (Spirits and Equilibrium)
FATE/Stay Night (Magician's Battle Royale)
Densetsu no Yuusha Densetsu (Magician war)
To Aru Kagaku no Railgun (Scientific Superpowers)
Busou Renkin (Arms Alchemy vs Homunculi)
Black Cat (Bounty Hunters, Assassins, BioWeapons, and more)
Karas (Flying magical samurai and spirits)
Soul Eater (Soul eaters and Demon Gods)
Shakugan no Shana (Flame Hazes and human-eating mosters)
.hack (sign, roots) (Video Game in anime form)
The Third: The Girl With the Blue Eye (Wild West/Post-apocalyptic/Fighter girl with a sentient tank)
Gunslinger Girl (Cyborg hit-girl assassins)
Grenadier (Wild West type)
GetBackers! (Bounty Hunters with Superpowers)

If you have to watch a dub, I'd suggest:
Hellsing (Vampires)
Black Lagoon (Pirates and Smugglers)
Death Note (Supernatural Suspense)
Yu Yu Hakusho (Human Psychics against demons)
Shaman King (It's ok, still kinda hate Shonen Jump regardless)
Ghost In the Shell (Spy/terrorist cyborgs)

Okay then. I wasn't trying to rag you out or anything but I remembered that Bleach has an incredible and ridiculous amount of filler. :\

Also, Ghost in the Shell. Thinking of watching it. Worth my time and where should I start?

It's pretty good if you stick with it, and it has a tolerable dub as well. The problem is that the first few episodes pace out like one-shots, so people give up on the series before they all tie back to the plot.
If you're starting from the beginning, you want Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone complex. I accidentally watched Stand Alone Complex - 2nd Gig when I started, and was completely confused by all the laughing man references that came from the first season.

And I think I only made it to episode 70 of Bleach XD. I just couldn't take how ADD the series was getting.

Oh don't worry, for the fillers well i skipped them. I am not interested at all. So yea when you think of it now, it makes a lot of episodes disapear like the bount episode which was way to long.

Well, it was supposed to be long. They needed to stall for time and let the manga get ahead, since an episode of a shonen series can burn through chapters of manga XD

I've... never gotten that vibe. I think the majority of Stand Alone episodes have been so well-written I find myself enjoying nearly every single episode regardless of whether or not it ties into the Laughing Man mystery.

Well, besides that ridiculous chat-room episode that went for entire 24 minutes. Serious blatant infodump/recap.

i love that chat room episode

that's what i like about the show. one episode it's all action *bang bang ninjas computers big guns* and then it's an entire 24 minutes of philosophical discussions, sometimes between humans, sometimes between machines, which i personally find even more interesting.

i really can't overstate how much i love SAC

What baffles me about the series (which I also love to bits; I saw a box set of SAC and 2nd GiG at my Gametraders last week and I seriously contemplated emptying my entire wallet that minute) is that a lot of the Stand Alone episodes seem to be throwbacks to other sorts of genres (like the Jungle Cruise episode, crime thriller, protagonist personal motive etc. which so happens to be one of my favorite episodes of the first SAC), but Ghost in the Shell in itself is pretty much king of the cyberpunk genre yet there's such a huge variety of themes and motifs, like you so mentioned.

It has that distinct TV show feel where every episode feels like it's being written by someone different every week.
Also, any episode significantly involving Tachikoma in the plot is automatically adorable

While I do sort of like that chat room episode, it didn't seem so much a heavy theoretical discussion on the themes of the Laughing Man plot as it was just a damn recap of every Complex episode that happened beforehand. Probably the most exciting part about it was the very ending where everything goes to shit, but besides that it was one of the few episodes I thought the series could have done without.
It didn't really progress the main plot, and if I were to guess its context it seemed like one of those episodes that the studio decides to write up after a hiatus from airing on television, and thought the viewers needed some time to wrap their heads around what exactly the fuck went on since Episode 1.

Also, the episodes kinda had a one-shot feel when taken into isolation. At the time of airing, there would have been a week's pause between them, so a recap episode would have helped viewers see how everything was slowly tying together, before the main plot started up.

it also allowed us to hear some thoughts on the whole ordeal from people besides highly trained military cyborgs, which i enjoyed.

the discussion about his "coolness" for example was pretty amusing, but a little weird. i feel like that might not have made the translation perfectly. all the characters were saying "cool" like it was a scientific personality trait and it was kinda funny and a little jarring.

So, 5 episodes in, and I think that the Persona 4 anime is being surprisingly well handled, though Chie's characterization is something I'm not too big on right now.

The last anime I watched (and completed) was a series of movies called Kara no Kyokai: Garden of Sinners.

When I was looking for music by composer Kajiura Yuki, I found the series.

Here is a clip of a fight scene from the first chapter/movie Overlooking View. (The fight begins at 1:20)
Overlooking View: Rooftop fight

It's the first clip I saw and I was immediately intrigued. I hunted down the movies and watched them all. Very strange story but I enjoyed it, though I wish I had seen it in HD. The fight scenes are incredible and fun to watch.

There are instances of the suicides, murders, rape... and cannibalism so if those are not your thing, skip the series.

A used CD/DVD store in Seattle was on the last lap of a going out of business liquidation, so I scored the complete "Argentosoma" series. That's what's on the dvd player in the kitchen these days.
And Evangelion 1.1, on the big tv.

Having seen mediocre reviews of Dead Leaves, it's not made it onto my list.

I'd forgotten about this thread.  When I contributed to it last year, the only anime I'd seen was NGE (all options), and Golden Boy.  Since then I've been investigating the field to get to know it more, and so far I've watched:

NGE + EoE (and Rebuild)  (I've also got the Sadamoto manga)
Golden Boy
FLCL  (also the manga, which I particularly like)
Cowboy Bebop (+ movie)
Fullmetal Alchemist (original + movie)
Fullmetal Alchemist, Brotherhood
Martian Successor Nadesico (+ movie)
Kare Kano aka His and Her Circumstances
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Azumanga Daioh (series and manga)
Gurren Lagann (+ movies)
RahXephon (series, movie and manga)

Still waiting their turns are:

Ghost in the Shell (movies only)
Redline (movie)
Mindgame (movie)
Daily Lives of High School Boys
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei

When I'm through this lot, I'm planning to write a bit more about what I made of them, to follow the earlier article I wrote.

I've also got a copy of Golgo 13 that came free with an order - but it's dubbed and subtitled in German, which isn't a lot of use to me, so I probably won't bother...

You know, you mentioned in the article that the generation gap was something that had significant influence over your anime experience. Would you say that such a gap may lock out what series you may find interesting or not? I only asked because I noticed I only recognize 6 of your watched list, and of those only three are what I would consider "recent" series. In addition, most fall within a certain genre and taste.

In other words, how did I choose those particular series?

I started with the most interestingly recommended items in a thread that started on the Pocket Jury forum in response to my article.  I looked at reviews, and followed up links about other series in those reviews.  I considered the scale of the series (I have a tendency to be obsessively completist, and so might get somewhat overwhelmed if I started on the Gundam lot, for instance, or Bleach).  I tried to identify those which offered a bit more depth than "mere" childish entertainment, trying, perhaps, to find parallels to those literary works for children that have proved to be of wider interest (like the children's books of CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien, for instance).  I have no interest in hentai, just as I have no wish to read Fanny Hill, Lady Chatterley's Lover, or 50 Shades of Gray.  I tried to find representative examples of action, weird, humour, and cute.  None the less, I also know that it is a small enough sample to be inevitably unrepresentative.

For practical reasons they are all series that can reasonably easily be bought on DVD (even if that meant going to an Australian store, for instance, which is the only way to buy Mindgame) - I couldn't be tied down to streaming them off the Internet or watching TV.  Most of my watching is actually on my iPhone while travelling or in my lunch break at the office.

Your comment that only a few are recent possibly reflects a difference in the perception of time that comes from age. I think.  Actually, they cover less than twenty years, not all that unevenly, and including very recent ones (PMMM, Redline, FMA Brotherhood, and Azumanga Daioh date from 2011, 2010, 2009, and 2008 respectively), but I am aware that there are some "classics" that are not represented.

@Pwhodges: Yeah, for me the word "recent" pretty much means "Anything within the last three years, the period of time in which I became actively interested in anime and would be able to watch series as they were released". I forget sometimes that this isn't really descriptive outside of when I use it to discuss with my coworkers, who are over a decade older than me and thus remember different series as being more prevalent. And yeah, my perception of time is certainly different. Two decades to me is my entire life XD

I suppose it's the fact that I forget not everyone is my age that leads to my surprise when people start out with the Gundam, Gurren Lagann, Evangelion era series (What I think of as "old") as opposed to the "newer" ones (Clannad, Angel Beats, Lucky Star, Haruhi, etc...)

@Satsugaikaze: First rule of looking at a series you're not familiar with; try to find its TVTropes or Wikipedia page and look at its genre tags. You'll save so much on brain bleach XD. If you don't know what a genre tag is, under no circumstances should you go to imageboards to find out. Again, conservation of brain bleach. I remember when I found out that "Guro" meant "Excessive Gore fetish for people who want nonstop Goregasms"

Gundam, Gurren Lagann, Evangelion era series (What I think of as "old")

Gundam: 1979; Evangelion: 1995; Gurren Lagann: 2007.  Hardly the same era!

I know. I'm odd like that, where I think of two decades as a long time, yet my perspective is skewed into "Things I care about" (three years) and "things I don't really care about at the moment" (Everything before that)

I'm not a huge anime fan, but there a few i've watched and enjoyed

One such right now is Persona 4: The Animation, Which i've started watching due to it's status as one of the hardest RPG's i've ever played on expert mode (Even on an NG+ i get stomped on, and this is with max level Personae no less), So i decided to give that a try and loved it, i reccomend this. However you may not adapt to it as it keeps its feel as a mix of a game and an Anime, and seems to assume at some points you've played the game.

Well Tender, I have yet to play P4G because it's not out in my area yet, but that game alone is simply the reason I will be buying a PSVita,

And i just watched the Shadow Kanji episode, I will never look at that boss the same again (especially in about 10 minutes when i fight him on expert)

I wonder about Paul's reaction to Madoka since I doubt he has had much exposure to the magical girl genre.
