So Monday's comic, my first thought on seeing the last panel was the alarm/klaxon sound The Bride hears in Kill Bill whenever she sees one of her would-be assassins right before she gives them a brutal asskicking.

Comerade Faye's Hat re-appears!

Awkward zone defeated!

Of course that awkwardness pales in comparison to the awkardness that will result from Marten's triumphant (Shyeah, as if) return to Coffee of Doom!

marten should just get the rest of the suit and walk right into COD and just get it over with....or skip a comic week ahead and then do it

this whole marten/dora awkwardness is no fun :(

but being realistic....its probably gona take something weird or a couple months worth of comics before that particular awkward zone gets defeated...

I'm surprised to see Hannelore balance the tea on the sofa arm; when I do that it spills and makes a mess.

Heh!  Punchline and title synergy, I guess (I thought the title was a bit weak until I saw that).  I guess Faye or Hanners could tip Marten off on the days Dora won't be there, so he could at least hang out at CoD with them - but I suppose those days would be few, as Dora being the owner tends to be there most of the time.

In the previous awkward zone, the bartender produced the clothing and hats on request - this time, it seems, the hats appeared by magic.

Well, Marten hanging around CoD would be sneaky and would be good reason, trust issues aside, for Dora to mistrust either Hanners or Faye. 'Sides, that little rat Penelope might tell on 'em. Then again, Dora might give Faye and Hanners a pass (the D/F friendship predates the start of the whole storyline, does it not?) and this could lead to a cautious, let's-not-hate-each-other patch-up. But hey, I'm not the one tellin' the story here, am I?

Also, apropos of a food discussion up-thread, a staffel is a Luftwaffe fighter squadron. Would you trust any of this bunch with high-performance, armed aircraft?

... Consciousness stream, on ...

Although "Pugnacious Peach" would make a good nickname for a fighter or a bomber -- you know, like "Memphis Belle"?  The Americans had a bomber made by the Glenn Martin Aircraft Co.,  called the B-26 Marauder. Think about it ... a Mart(e)n Marauder ... think of the nose art ...

OK, there are other things I should be doing ...

Ha. Well phrased.  Well phrased indeed.

Come to think of it, the coffee shop, though it is where the main cast spent most of their time together pre-breakup, would probably not be such a good place for Marten and Dora to have their first meeting post-breakup - after all, CoD is WORK for everyone except Marten.  Work is not necessarily the best place for what is sure to be an awkward moment, or collection of awkward moments, especially when there are customers who need sassing.

Keep trying, you may get lucky again!

Wait, that came out wrong...

(Eh, maybe not.)

I like that in the span of time between sightings of the Russian army hat, it's style has gone from indy to mainstream... the damn furry flap things are in every mall store and Wal*mart in the country now!

See, that awkward wasn't a big deal.  But yes, in a few days/maybe a week (comic) time, Marten should go see Dora, maybe at Svens, and hash out an attempt at a less awkward future for all.

Carl-E, I agree that someone should do it, and I will concede that Martin is more likely to take the step, BUT I think that Dora really ought to be the one to take the step.  She is the one that created the problem(s), and she needs to be the one to fix it/them, not to mention herself.  Martin is all too likely to step up and "be the bigger man", and I don't really think that it would be the best move for anyone.

Having said that...."Have faith in the author, Luke, have faith in the author".

Yes, this story line has pushed buttons.  Can you tell?

I don't post usually, but that poll had me cracking up with the choice for a rubbish bowler from the West Indies...lord knows we have too many rubbish bowlers as it stands here in the WI, don't need Marten to join the ranks.  :-P

On topic, I wonder what kind of disguise Hanners would have for Marten? Perhaps a full body suit, just so long as it isn't using someone we know:

Netram Deer.....

I'm getting visions of Guy N. Cognito.

Netram gets the crap beaten out of him in Coffee of Doom and then thrown out onto the street just as Marten walks by. Marten notices his doppleganger and is about to say something, where he notices a brand new coffee/music store across the street. Giddy with excitement (well, as giddy as Marten can be), he crosses the street and enters the store. Whereupon he meets the owner, who looks suspiciously like Dora with a fairly ornate handlebar moustache.

Hilarity ensues.

For comic 1842...

1. Netram Deer, entering Coffee of Doom with his new girlfriend, Zatanna  ...

2. Yay for Faye's ushanka, nice touch with some Tnetnoc Elbanoitseuq history.

3. I think the Blood Tree cap might have been more of a Dora hat rather than Hanners, but hard to say what a really fitting "maximum ridiculousity" would be for for Hannelore to wear :? (hat or costume-wise).  [P.S Add: Yes, I thought of the hazmat suit and Worry Hat, still not ridiculous enough]

4. As I said before, I also agree it will be a while yet before we see Marten hanging out with the majority female cast of QC in Coffee of Doom.  On the other hand, it seems we are effectively past the aftermath (but not necessarily the after-effects) of The Break-Up, so time to start moving forward again.

There are just some no-go topics with people, that, no matter the circumstances, will never be funny to them. Sometimes, that pain is just too nasty to be made light of, and for some people it can be enough to ruin even the steadiest friendships.

I wanted to quote this for truth.  I also wanted to point out that if the topic is no-go because of something painful in the person's past, it's quite possible that you won't know about that past pain when you make that comment you considered a lighthearted jest.

It's also quite possible that the person you've unwittingly hurt won't tell you that s/he even found the comment hurtful, let alone why.  If this seems unfair, bear in mind that with your "lighthearted jest", you've given the impression that you don't take that topic seriously, so why would s/he want to open up about this pain only to be possibly met with more "jokes"?

( This blog post uses misogynist sexism as an example - no trigger warnings I can see: http://shakespearessister.blogspot.com/2009/08/terrible-bargain-we-have-regretfully.html )

With regard to this particular comic story arc: I for one haven't seen anything in Faye's story to suggest Marten's unfortunate remark would be a trigger for her.  More importantly, though, I think that if it really did bother her, she'll eventually say something.  It might well be off-camera, to her therapist, something like that.  But I think it'd be very unlike her to say nothing, at this point.

Awkward Zone averted

I think the sooner Marten goes to CoD and 'confronts' Dora, the better it'll be at this stage.  If they're going to salvage their friendship, the longer he leaves it, the more difficult it's going to be.

After all, they were friends before they became partners.

Yeah, that's been pointed out pretty much every time discussion of Marten's name spelling is brought up.

I still maintain that Jeph was telling us all about the character long before the comic got this far.

It would certainly explain why Marten's pretty much been the comic's Butt Monkey, with a brief break during his relationship with Dora. One reason it had to end is that a Butt Monkey can't be happy for too long.

As for Marten ending up friends with Dora, it would be a major change from how he treated his other exes. Not only is he not friends with Vicki, for example, but he almost ran out the back entrance the one time she came into CoD while he was there (and thanks to Faye, she'll almost certainly never return, so Marten will most likely never see her again). Far as Dora is concerned, well, it'd be easier for him to just find another coffee shop to hang out in. Dora certainly wouldn't come to the apartment. I can't see either of them making the effort unless one of their mutual friends (Faye, Hannelore) forces the issue.

You mean Netram's debut in CoD. I've never been to an ostrich race, sounds like fun.

They are hella fun.  They hold races just down the road from me:  Ostrich Racing News

Oooh. If only I could get to Arizona.

I thought a stake through the heart was supposed to... you know, foof the vampire into dust or something. Least, that's what happens every time I've seen it in the movies.
Disintegrating into dust is a recent trope. You just haven't watched enough old Hammer Horror movies on late-night TV. Or read Bram Stoker in full-weird psycho-sexual flood:

"The thing in the coffin writhed, and a hideous, blood-curdling screech came from the opened red lips. The body shook and quivered and twisted in wild contortions. The sharp white teeth champed together till the lips were cut, and the mouth was smeared with a crimson foam. But Arthur never faltered. He looked like a figure of Thor as his untrembling arm rose and fell, driving deeper and deeper the mercy-bearing stake, whilst the blood from the pierced heart welled and spurted up around it. His face was set, and high duty seemed to shine through it. The sight of it gave us courage so that our voices seemed to ring through the little vault. And then the writhing and quivering of the body became less, and the teeth seemed to champ, and the face to quiver. Finally it lay still. The terrible task was over."

I like that in the span of time between sightings of the Russian army hat, it's style has gone from indy to mainstream... the damn furry flap things are in every mall store and Wal*mart in the country now!
The "Russian army hat" is a ushanka. Popular in China too. And you know they've gone mainstream when there is a website devoted to selling them. Capitalism good, tovarich!

Thank you for linking to this excellent article.

Netram Deer sounds vaguely Indian to me (maybe I've read too much Vikram Seth). One of the poll options should definitely have been "Bollywood film-star".

What's funny is, I don't generally follow cricket. Being a Yank and all, of course. But I do know my googlies from my leg turns.
(A pedantic cricket fan writes...):
"Leg turns"? Do you mean "leg breaks"?
See? I knew it was something like that. My lingo is bad. Gotta go brush up.

BTW: I prefer Limited Overs and Twenty20 to the "proper" cricket of Test Matches and the like.

I'm a little late with this, but Hanners in a baseball cap and hoodie could only be cuter if she managed pigtails. As it stands, she's pretty adorable.

Disintegrating into dust is a recent trope. You just haven't watched enough old Hammer Horror movies on late-night TV. Or read Bram Stoker in full-weird psycho-sexual flood:
Bram Stokers vampires already disintegrated into dust as well, if the vampire was old enough. More specifically, the vampire would revert to its natural state. That would translate, for really old vampires, to turn into dust almost immediately.

Some modern movies make use of the "turn to dust" part simply because its cheaper and easier to handle than alternatives. Buffy Summers the vampire slayer stakes a vampire, and *poof* it turns to dust.

It has to be noted, though, that Bram Stokers vampires are very different from what we are used to. For example, they could walk in bright daylight just fine.

@PenSwordAccord:  I'm generally fairly relaxed about spelling, but I do think we should try to get the names of the characters we discuss right.  Curious as it seems, it's not Martin but Marten.

QC Discussion: "Dear Jeff, how does Martin type with boxing gloves on?"

Computer over? Virus= Very Yes?! That's not a good prize!!

Ah, the LANPARK makes a return appearance! And I don't think Marten would be let back in there after what happened last time with him, Faye and Pintsize's Laser.

I'm guessing the first shop was *$, by the way.
