for comic 1844..

1. Upon reflection of the comic strip title after reading, I give an eye-roll groan at the overall Harry Potter gag  .

2. Jeph: "It\'s something like late-winter/early-spring in QC time, so who in their right mind would wear a fairy costume outdoors?"  Faeries, of course.

3. While I could never object to more Hannelore time  , should she not be working alongside the other QC-girls of the Marten-exiled Coffee of Doom?

4. I do enjoy Hanners filling in the companion slot for Marten, however.  She really is the only viable person to do so, since all the other girls in Marten's life are involved with other people or things in their own lives.

hmm an indication of passage of time from jeph, that whole snow party wasnt to long ago
come to think of it...it does kinda fit as a month or 2

Over here in Germany (which is basically next door to you) we have plenty of cities with what they call "radial streets", ie streets leading away from a church, marketplace etc. in every direction you can imagine, because most cities are pretty old and were founded in the middle ages. Don't you have such cities?  :?

yes but thats what i would call downtown, plus the shops are pretty close together (old houses have their bottom floor turned into them)
but some old city centers indeed have houses in between, their pretty rare though (its mostly for historic value)

Remember, America didn't have a "middle ages" like us in Europe.  The reason tourists from over there are so "ooh! aah!" in European cities is that they really haven't  seen stuff that old before.

Yeah, to us "really old stuff" is something from the 1700's. Or, in some places in the Northeast and Southwest, 1600's.

(To my shame, it's only "1800's" in my neck of the woods.)

do all small american towns have a layout like this?

It's more common on the East coast. Cities there are older than in the rest of the US, and have generally existed for at least a few hundred years if they are of any significant size.

Old planning didn't take into account modern advances, but older neighborhoods are rarely completely rezoned, mainly due to historic buildings (again, more of these in the East) and complications from rerouting traffic and utility services.

You must also remember that Europe in general has stricter zoning codes because they had to rebuild half the cities. When they did, they were able to take into account things like roads and electricity.  :-P

Is it possible that there is a cute blond chick in NoHo who's crazier than Hannelore?

We must know more about fairy princess costume chick!!!

Probably several.  I'd say she's either on her way to a children's party and is getting into character, or is just right out to lunch.

Real faeries are a whole lot scarier.

Until I thoroughly reread I thought the title said we needed to beware of secret wizards, not student wizards.

And man, unicorns are nothing. I ain't worried till I see a dragon poke its head around the street corner.

Sure, and I was conscious of that while writing; but in the context of the origins of current town plans, the point is valid, I think.

Well, as our knowledge about genetics improves further, creating reallife unicorns will probably be possible soon.

Also, in a world with little androids, its very likely that creating an artificial unicorn isnt so hard either.

so daddy little princess can abuse/neglect a unicorn instead of a regular horse?

plus it'l be a long time untill its financially worth it to create a unicorn, or there have to be scientists that actually make this for their experiment instead of a 4-asses monkey

When the mental hospital shuts down, it opens up the door for all sorts of crazies. I'm not surprised by the fairy costume. I'm surprised that the person wearing it didn't have a receding hairline, beard, and backhair.

Sure, those ones aren't, the ones that swap babies in cribs, slaughter you for looking at them, and hunt mercilessly on particular nights of the year - those generally don't get portrayed in a comic strip.

Doubt it. Young mister Reed might look at the beast and shrug to himself, thinking "This pretty much sums up how my life feels at the moment."

Alternative version;

"hmmm, I wonder what Mom/Dora/Faye/Vicki is doing in this part of town?"

(NOTE: the previous eight in the list above are actual coffee houses in Northampton, Massachusetts. The more you know...)

never google mapped northampton before, but it doesnt look like much on maps/satallite   doesnt have streetview sadly

as a person from a country (holland) with very precise and strict city planning, do all small american towns have a layout like this?

i cant make heads or tails of what 'downtown' is here, its shops and houses mixed all over the place ;o  plus it kinda looks like a dump from space

Many New England towns (north east region of USA,  original colonies)  are laid out following the laws of non-elcludian space-time.   Many streets loop back on themselves or end in places Beyond.

The reason for this is we wanted to really really mind-fuck the British if they came back a third time.

The town I grew up in (Reading, Berkshire) had a fiendish plan to confuse the Germans if they had invaded during the Second World War - they changed the destination signs on the buses from saying the road name to saying the name of the nearest public house.  That would have stopped the invaders in their tracks, don't you think?  Anyway, a couple of these destination names were retained after the war, and so I went to school for several years on a bus that said it was going to a pub!

There's NO WAY Coffee of Doom is the only 'acceptable' place for Marten.
He needs to never go in there again. If it were the real world!

Man, some people must live in an odd real world if breaking up with someone because of issues that have nothing to do with compatibility for friendship means NEVER GOING NEAR THEM AGAIN.

(I mean, yeah, go somewhere else for a while and give space, but SERIOUSLY, wth guys.)

For many people, in many social circles, never seeing or talking to your ex again is a common result of a breakup. Common enough in that it's unusual when it doesn't happen. And remember, Marten is NOT friends with any of his other exes. He doesn't see or talk to Vicki, for example, and he's fine with that. It may be different in your social circle, but that's your social circle.

To be fair, I was responding more to the "If it were the real world!" as though, no where, ever, is it ever a good idea for a person to talk to their ex.

Basically, I took umbrage with being told I apparently live in the fake world.

I admit that in some social circles this IS what happens. But the idea that in the REAL WORLD it is a bad idea to ever ever go around one of your ex's is a pretty small worldview.

Sure, and I was conscious of that while writing; but in the context of the origins of current town plans, the point is valid, I think.
Indeed, as I thought when I was posting.  When it comes to ancient urban plans, I give you the hutong of Beijing, and yes, there really are streets down there. The Chinese approach to urban development is generally just to send in the bulldozers, and the hutong are rapidly disappearing except for patches preserved for tourism.

Kinda reminds me of some housing areas in the Middle East I've seen, like Nefta.

Yay for fresh new QC locales, ideas, images!!!    :-D

Hoping we're out of the Dora doldrums, setting a new course for levity, humor, feisty Faye, Metamorphosing Marten, delicious Marigold, cute Momo-tan and perennial Pintsize!

Seeing as Dora has been part of QC from quite early days, and a key part for the greater part of it, I doubt she will simply vanish - I guess we'll see glimpses of how she copes with this, but she might become a more minor character, perhaps like Steve (who goes back even further, after all).

Jeph could always replace her with Mysterious Dancing Fairy.

I'd welcome it. A positive-attituded blonde girl with offhanded connections to an evil world-dominating mega PMC?

Heck yes!

Sure, those ones aren't, the ones that swap babies in cribs, slaughter you for looking at them, and hunt mercilessly on particular nights of the year - those generally don't get portrayed in a comic strip.

Eric "Websnark" Burns did for a while, but the project (Gossamer Commons) ended, unfinished, after a year.
