1. Upon reflection of the comic strip title after reading, I give an eye-roll groan at the overall Harry Potter gag .

2. Jeph: "It\'s something like late-winter/early-spring in QC time, so who in their right mind would wear a fairy costume outdoors?"  Faeries, of course.

3. While I could never object to more Hannelore time , should she not be working alongside the other QC-girls of the Marten-exiled Coffee of Doom?

4. I do enjoy Hanners filling in the companion slot for Marten, however.  She really is the only viable person to do so, since all the other girls in Marten's life are involved with other people or things in their own lives.

Over here in Germany (which is basically next door to you) we have plenty of cities with what they call "radial streets", ie streets leading away from a church, marketplace etc. in every direction you can imagine, because most cities are pretty old and were founded in the middle ages. Don't you have such cities?  

yes but thats what i would call downtown, plus the shops are pretty close together (old houses have their bottom floor turned into them)
but some old city centers indeed have houses in between, their pretty rare though (its mostly for historic value)

Remember, America didn't have a "middle ages" like us in Europe.  The reason tourists from over there are so "ooh! aah!" in European cities is that they really haven't  seen stuff that old before.

Yeah, to us "really old stuff" is something from the 1700's. Or, in some places in the Northeast and Southwest, 1600's.

(To my shame, it's only "1800's" in my neck of the woods.)

It's more common on the East coast. Cities there are older than in the rest of the US, and have generally existed for at least a few hundred years if they are of any significant size.

Old planning didn't take into account modern advances, but older neighborhoods are rarely completely rezoned, mainly due to historic buildings (again, more of these in the East) and complications from rerouting traffic and utility services.

You must also remember that Europe in general has stricter zoning codes because they had to rebuild half the cities. When they did, they were able to take into account things like roads and electricity.

as a person from a country (holland) with very precise and strict city planning, do all small american towns have a layout like this?

i cant make heads or tails of what 'downtown' is here, its shops and houses mixed all over the place ;o  plus it kinda looks like a dump from space

Many New England towns (north east region of USA,  original colonies)  are laid out following the laws of non-elcludian space-time.   Many streets loop back on themselves or end in places Beyond.

The reason for this is we wanted to really really mind-fuck the British if they came back a third time.

The town I grew up in (Reading, Berkshire) had a fiendish plan to confuse the Germans if they had invaded during the Second World War - they changed the destination signs on the buses from saying the road name to saying the name of the nearest public house.  That would have stopped the invaders in their tracks, don't you think?  Anyway, a couple of these destination names were retained after the war, and so I went to school for several years on a bus that said it was going to a pub!

Man, some people must live in an odd real world if breaking up with someone because of issues that have nothing to do with compatibility for friendship means NEVER GOING NEAR THEM AGAIN.

For many people, in many social circles, never seeing or talking to your ex again is a common result of a breakup. Common enough in that it's unusual when it doesn't happen. And remember, Marten is NOT friends with any of his other exes. He doesn't see or talk to Vicki, for example, and he's fine with that. It may be different in your social circle, but that's your social circle.

To be fair, I was responding more to the "If it were the real world!" as though, no where, ever, is it ever a good idea for a person to talk to their ex.

Basically, I took umbrage with being told I apparently live in the fake world.

I admit that in some social circles this IS what happens. But the idea that in the REAL WORLD it is a bad idea to ever ever go around one of your ex's is a pretty small worldview.

Indeed, as I thought when I was posting.   When it comes to ancient urban plans, I give you the hutong of Beijing, and yes, there really are streets down there. The Chinese approach to urban development is generally just to send in the bulldozers, and the hutong are rapidly disappearing except for patches preserved for tourism.
