I think they played some of these songs when I saw them, and everything they played was pretty great.

I like the American Analog Set, but it's just kind of dumb to come into a thread about Low - a band that basically has nothing to do with the American Analog Set - and basically say "I don't care about Low, let's talk about this other band" whose only tenuous relation to the topic is through the vague genre delineation of 'slowcore' which is probably even a misnomer because the American Analog set basically just write pop songs.

I Could Live in Hope is my favorite, and also the one I started with.

much of their other music failed to impress me but I love ICLiH very much. Trust is pretty excellent too.

You should be more careful with your rhetoric. We cool.

Well, maybe I  not cool 'cause apparently I think I too cool for grammerz.

AmAnSet never died, really. The Wooden Birds are the exact same thing (read: Andrew Kenny) but with less fuzzy guitars.

Where's a good place to start with Low?

The first two songs on Trust; "(That's How You Sing) Amazing Grace" and "Canada".

agreed. those two songs make that entire album awesome, even the rest is kind of "meh"

It has the same problem as The Curtain Hits the Cast, where it runs so long by the time it's over you're kind of drained and "meh" on the whole thing.  It does have a few other of my favorite songs of theirs though, like "Candy Girl", "In the Drugs", and "Point of Disgust".

Good article here.

Some highlights:

Quote
The resulting album C’mon shares the same kind of simple intimacy as classic Low albums like Trust and Secret Name. After experimenting with dense soundscapes and more politically- themed material on their past couple of albums, C’mon finds the band operating in a much more stripped down setting, once again exploring deeply personal and spiritual ideas that make their best records so haunting.

Quote
The new record also showcases more of Parker’s voice this time around, particularly on “You See Everything” and “Especially Me” which Parker wrote.

Quote
“We practice in our basement, so lately we’ve just been looking at our old CDs and picking songs that we haven’t performed in a long time, which is fun. Also, our bass player will often come to rehearsal and ask us to play songs we’ve haven’t done in years. He’ll be like, ‘Why don’t you ever play this one?’ And we’re always like, ‘We have no idea. Let’s do it.’

it's not that it's actually "meh" it's just that the first two or three songs are so excellent that it makes the rest of the album seem worse than it really is, besides a few standout tracks later on like, as tommy said, "john prine"

it's like eating cheesecake and then grilled cheese (substitute your owns tastes here, i guess). grilled cheese isn't bad per se, but next to cheesecake it's like "who cares?"

to be fair making you feel "meh" is kind of what alan sparhawk was going for on the pre-drums and guns era stuff.

i mean the really early stuff makes bedhead sound like the pipettes.

So I am listening to this right now. "You See Everything", "Witches", and "Something's Turning Over" seem like slight missteps upon first listen, but the rest of the album is great. "Majesty/Magic" is basically every reason why I love Low in one song.

"Witches" is maybe my favourite track on the record? I like that there's a good chunk of variation on this one.

I have a feeling the song will grow on me. I have listened a few more times and like it more each time. Maybe I just don't get the Al Green reference.
