MALÖRT
« on: 26 Jan 2011, 18:58 »

I thought about just posting in the "you, you better not be sober thread" but I feel like Malört deserves its own thread.

If you have not had this you are missing out.  I guess it's pretty localized to the Chicagoland/Chicago area, but if you have had it you will not be without an opinion.  This stuff rules!  Also, as a typically nerdy-type dude, I felt a bit of a rub when I read a press release:

"Most first-time drinkers of Jeppson Malort reject our liquor. Its strong, sharp taste is not for everyone. Our liquor is rugged and unrelenting (even brutal) to the palate. During almost 60 years of American distribution, we found only 1 out of 49 men will drink Jeppson Malort. During the lifetime of our founder, Carl Jeppson was apt to say, 'My Malort is produced for that unique group of drinkers who disdain light flavor or neutral spirits."

Here's a video my friend Shawn made of him offering first timers a shot of the beautiful drink that is Malört

Is it just really strong, like burn your throat strong, or is it the taste that's harsh?

at first taste, it's sort of like if you took all the stuff from under your sink and made it taste slightly better.  After a while (or a couple of my friends who liked it from the first shot say this too) a lot of people say it tastes like grapefruit but a little stronger.

Hopefully I will be moving to Chicago before the year is up, so I might have a chance to taste this insanity.

I think at this point pretty much any dive-ish bar in chicago would have it, not sure about liquor stores (I am lucky enough to live outside chicago with a sweet corner liquor store on my street that carries it).  I've been to a couple stores in Chicago where the clerk just gives me a really strange look.

It's definitely a good way to sort of "play a trick" on a friend who doesn't know what it is:

"dude, lemme get you a shot!"

"sweet! ... ... aaugh, why!?!"

Oops sorry guys. I thought this was going to be another one of those clever Walmart puns and rants. Now I'm slightly bemused.
