Be Prepared - Tom Lehrer
« on: 02 Feb 2011, 06:34 »

Jeph's comment this morning said "Okay it's kind of creepy to apply the Boy Scout model to prophylaxis".  However creepy, the idea is not new.  As evidence, I offer this link:

There is another recording of this with slightly different words, but the ending of the song is the same in any case and that's what's important.

Tom Lehrer is awesome, of course.

I simply don't understand why Jeph wrote that it's even slightly creepy to have condoms to hand.  It seems like basic social hygiene to me.

I think he's saying the same thing you are.  It's inept of Angus not to already know whether he has the condoms available.  What's creepy (thinks Jeph) is associating Boy Scouts and condoms through the "be prepared" motto.  I don't actually think that's at all creepy, and the Eagle Scouts to whom I've put the question are generally ready to see the importance of being prepared in exactly the way Jacques and Lehrer mention; they are usually not the choirboys we think they are.  But then again, perhaps neither are the choirboys.  But Tom Lehrer definitely didn't want anyone to believe he wasn't beyond the pale, witness another great song of his - "Smut":

This. Taking charge of your sexual health and family planning is not only being responsible, it's just good manners.

Akronnick, I can think of no more appropriate steed for a Knight Of The Dickbroom than a foul-mouthed, perpetually shouting, lust-crazed bird with a scrotum hanging from its chin and a distinctive cry of "Gobble gobble gobble".   --Tergon

I'm thinking it is more creepy to associate boy scouts with condoms.

Why would you be a former Tom Lehrer fan?

I'm a former bay scout, and I'm a Ton Lehrer fan.

OK, point taken.  I have this same problem in real life, too.

I know you did.  But it was either reply and keep the gag going, or do nothing...
