I use Fixedsys (looked that up) in Notepad solely because it's the first fixed-width font I found in the list, along with whatever the default font in OpenOffice is, and that's about as far as I'm willing to go. Am I really in the minority here?

No. For all my serious typ(esett)ing I use whatever font LaTeX defaults to in the plain text body. Computer modern roman?
