Stuff that you have to hear on CD/vinyl?
« on: 30 Jan 2011, 20:53 »

I was listening to Ricardo Villalobos's Alcachofa today on CD, and I realized how much better it sounded than the mp3 rips of it I normally listen to--almost a night and day difference. If I had heard it on mp3 first, I don't know if I would have ever gotten into it; it sounds so much flatter. For most albums I don't notice such a big difference, but here it was really obvious.

Anyone know of any other albums that just don't translate well onto mp3? Really spacious, hi-fi stuff?

I recently got the vinyl of Minus the Bear's OMNI, and it is 100x better than any recording I've heard of it. They really did a fantastic job with it.

Most ambient stuff I listen to - Xela, Grouper, Eluvium, and Svarte Greiner come immediately to mind although there's a bunch of others - sounds better on vinyl to me. Somehow they're deeper, more expansive sounding.

Yeah it really does.

I'm really enjoying the Woody Guthrie Dust Bowl Ballads vinyl that I got the other day. It feels a lot more real on vinyl.

i still maintain that the only way to listen to Nirvana's "unplugged in new york" is on cassette tape.

it just feels phony on cd, i don't know why. it SOUNDS pretty much the same but it just doesn't feel quite right

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon LCD Soundsystem's Sound of Silver and any of the Black Keys albums all sound excellent on vinyl.  I can't help but think most things sound better on it.

I've been meaning to read it again, but I lent it to a friend a while ago and haven't gotten it back yet, I'm going to prod him for it.
