I have learned not to relate the quality of CG trailers to the overall quality of the game.  This cg movie is gorgeous, wonderfully put together, and works perfectly as a short film.  What it does a fantastic job of doing is peaking my interest in a project that I thought was vaporware.

It was very pretty, now show some gameplay.

I'm pretty sure this was just to announce the title, which as of yet has no conceivable release date, so I think it's safe to say we'll have plenty of time and material to judge whether the actual game will be worth playing.

I kind of don't wanna hear anything more about this game now, because that film was so beautiful and amazing that I have serious doubts in the game's ability to match it. I'm not even sure what kind of tone the game itself is going to try to strike.

Developer's Deep Silver, who have developed some mediocre action RPGs (Risen, etc.) as well as racing and branded shovelware games I have not played.

Not sure where these quotes are from, but i hope they're legit cause it sounds awesome

Quote
Publisher Deep Silver and developer Techland recently showed me an early build of Dead Island, and the zombies were horrifying in their varying states of decay. With each blow, their already sloughing flesh fell away in sprays of blood, revealing layers of muscle underneath.

Quote
Although the player starts out as a simple tourist with minimal zombie-killing skills, his traits will improve along the way, thanks to a mini role-playing system built into the game. Although Deep Silver isn't spilling all the details yet, we know there will be a leveling system and a skill tree. As the player progresses, his stats will increase and he'll gain access to new combat abilities and animations.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

I think I'm over zombies.  Throwing zombies into everything just isn't interesting anymore.  You really need to do something unique with it and hopefully this will be it.

The people who are making this game made the Call of Juarez games, I've never played them but from what I heard they were merely ok.  Their track record isn't fantastic but the game is now on my radar.

I'm more interested in Brian Mitsoda's (wrote Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines) turn-based zombie RPG, Dead State (awful dearth of zombie game names, I guess. Dead State, Dead Island, Dead Nation, etc.). But then, we know absolutely nothing about this game.

I get that response.  My thing is, I've been a sucker for zombies since the first time I saw 'Night of the Living Dead'.  So right now, I'm in zombie game fucking heaven.  But yes, for someone not as obsessed with zombies as I am, I can understand feeling inundated.   Of course, most people probably didn't watch 'Zombie Strippers' either, and I've seen it multiple times.  So...

I think I'm more interested in that Zombie game for XBL that 1 Up was talking about, cause it has to do more with surviving and living in a Zombie Apocalypse then just running from point A to B killing as many zombies as you can.

Based on what little description they've given us of the gameplay for Dead Island, it's going to focus a little more on that than usual, too. But really, we know very little.

Risen was pretty damn good compared to your average action RPG gameplay wise - fighting felt intuitive and challenging without being more complicated than it needed to be. I'm not sure if it was any good if you went the mage route, though.

If this is going to be a hack and slash zombie RPG, I'll probably play it, otherwise, probably not. I'm not really into the whole survival horror genre.

Yeah, I know that cinematics don't equate to gameplay (Final Fantasy XIII, anyone?), but this trailer is by far the best anything trailer I've seen in a long time. Here's hoping it's a great game, and also that SWM's quotes are the truth.

Some screens in this article about people wanting to grab the movie rights, already.

A new zombie game with maybe some levelling stuff built in, I can get on board with that. Another zombie movie? Not so much.

I highly doubt that this game will be nearly as emotionally involving as the trailer. I am reminded of this trailer for Gears Of War; an attempt at making viewers feel emotionally invested in something that is not nearly as emotional as the trailer would have you believe. At least not in the same way.

Though I am not arguing that that trailer is a very beautiful film.

So I dunno, sounds an awful lot like Dead Rising 2. I'm hoping the survival is integral to the game play and not just find cool shit to stick together to make better cool shit to kill hordes of zombies with. The whole part about re-claiming the island overtime is interesting but right now I'm a little bummed out it sounds more hack-slash and I dunno, less like Survival Kids/Lost In Blue with zombies. Which was totally what I was hoping for.

From pretty much every single preview I've read I've heard the exact same thing, the game's tone is essentially the same as Dead Rising.  The voice-acting and dialogue (so far) have been incredibly juvenile and the entire emphasis is on killing zombies all the time.  I was honestly disinterested the second I heard "makeshift weapons."  What's the point of saying that guns are going to be rare, which they did, when you can electrify a machete and go to town?

I think this could have been a really nice, serious, more somber take on the zombie that we haven't seen that often in videogames.  A game where survival actually means something.  That's what the preview trailer suggested and kind of what I was hoping for.  The actual reality of the game doesn't interest me all that much.

Their explanation on what they are thinking the game will be has sort of turned me off of it. It seems like a giant hodgepodge of every other zombie game instead of it's own unique thing

It seems like making that preview is actively hurting them? I'm sure that many of you have bought and played the Dead Rising games and probably enjoyed them, along with a bunch of other zombie games. Do you think if you hadn't seen the trailer, you'd be going easier on the game for it's perceived lack of originality/triteness?

I don't think it's as much a question of "would you go easier on it" as "would you be paying attention to it at all?" I think this is a case where any publicity is good publicity, because they've definitely garnered the interest of many casual fans who just like zombie games that otherwise wouldn't have noticed Dead Island among the sea (har har) of other zombie games.

I would be down for a game that was claiming to be a "mash up of recent zombie games entering on Dead Rising 2 but better done." This kind of switcheroo just makes me not want to pay attention at all.

Honestly, these guys are going to have to try much harder to get me excited for their game than with a short film. I can understand why developers continue to grasp at drawing a crowd to their game with CG nonsense, but I have a difficult time looking forward to anything these days that isn't showing me gameplay. Those screenshots look good, sure, but I have a hard time putting too much stock in those these days as well. It's far easier to make your game look good standing still than it is to show it in motion, and with the developer being none other than Techland I am increasingly wary that this game has something significant to offer. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the first Call of Juarez more than the game's multitude of problems annoyed me, which helped me to enjoy its sequel moreso, but Techland does not make extremely competent high budget games. They make good games, but not much more. Have any of you seen their last game in action, nail'd? It looks pretty awesome, but at the same time, easily forgettable.
Or, rather, before Techland releases Dead Island, I feel like we'll be getting our new Call of Juarez game, which looks a bit ridiculous.

I actually didn't like Dead Rising. Couldn't get into it.

I'm going to agree with most of the sentiments thusfar quoted -- I'm no longer super excited about this game. It's an amalgamation of every other 1ps/zombie/survival game out there. If, as Ikrik said, survival actually meant something, rather than just staying alive, I could get behind this game.

Have to disagree there.  Mind you, it's just my opinion, but Silent Hill was never a flavor of horror that I enjoyed.

I did not intend to make it sound like I was saying Amnesia was the best survival horror game I've ever played, but rather, the best of recent.

Amnesia is a damn well-made game, as well as a successful game in the sense that it accomplishes what it sets out to with aplomb and seat-shitting grandeur, but I would have a hard time wanting to compare it to Silent Hill 2, which is also a triumph of a game, but in a different time and way. Amnesia is also an interestingly made game in that it directly learns from the Penumbra series to the point where I'm suspicious that those games were made largely in preparation for mastering the system they would use here.

That said, you should play Amnesia. If yea be a fan of harrowing experience, thou shalt look none further than Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

Oh wait. Whoa. Sorry Dead Island thread.
I'm sure Dead Island will be awesome and live up to the cool CG short film!
