To be honest I keep recording these too ealry or too late and I'm half asleep still when I do them. That recording was the first thing I'd spoken this morning (although I'd been up since 8 working - on a script, so no talking just clickety clack).

Also, a note on my "south" and Tania's "house": The "ow" sound that "ou" makes a lot of the time is definitely a Canadian thing to say weird. I believe it's where the whole "aboot" thing comes from originally. It didn't come across as much in my clip, but I normally say house the same way Tania does.

Though I've only taken one linguistics course, we just went over code switching so I wanted to clarify this. Code switching refers to using multiple languages or dialects in a single utterance, the most obvious example being "Spanglish". What he's doing sounds closer to the Communication concept of accommodation, where one chooses to adjust one's speech to be similar to their conversational partner. This is usually done in order to express goodwill towards the partner, or to seek approval from them.

I actually pronounce "route" multiple ways in different contexts. I'm not sure what those contexts are* but I know that I say both "root" and "rout" at times. I think I tend to say the latter more often, but I'm not sure.

*I definitely pronounce it "root" when saying road names, as in Route 66, but I don't know what other contexts. I tend to say "rout" more by itself, as in "Don't go that route."

I think I always say it "root". Not sure if I've ever said it the other way.

But I like the meme thing. The words seemed like odd choices at first, but you can hear the differences. Like some people will say some words almost the same (data) and then in other words (pecan and New Orleans) it really shows. Weird!

i live in bakersfield so there are many many encounters with very southern-tinged drawls

i remember making fun of a kid in second grade who said "crayon" like "crown"

well actually i never talked that much before third grade so maybe i didn't make fun of him but i definitely did so mentally.

The L in almond shouldn't be silent, unlike salmon.

As for the "crown" thing, that's something I've noticed from family members who are originally from very rural parts of Kentucky. That's about it, though.

I think I usually pronounce crayon like "cran" in cranberry. I used to fully pronounce it but was made fun of for it. I took speech therapy as a kid (I said my Rs funny) so I was taught to pronounce everything properly. Then in middle school and high school I was picked on for over-pronouncing everything. I still say things like clothing instead of clothes, though.

One word not on the list that I know splits some people is the pronunciation of the English word "either," which some people say "aither" and some people say "eether." I guess in American English, saying "aither" is somewhat uncommon? I dunno what the regional divide is, but my girlfriend called me out on it a while ago.

Eck I always end up getting worked up over discussions about "either".

To me, ee-ther is the correct pronunciation. It also sounds completely stupid. It's just... for some reason I feel like "ee" is not a phoneme that should start a word like that. In my head it looks like "-ther", where the - is a sewing needle sticking out of the front of the word. It's too sharp and un-word-y.

So I say "eye-ther", even though I feel like that's not the accepted way of saying it.

-wow I'm sleepy and I probably sound absolutely crazy.

Only a little. My pronunciation of it tends to shift depending on context. Like, when referring to two options, I'll say "ee-ther" but when I'm saying, for example "I'm not doing that, either" then it is "eye-ther".

Technically, the word comes from german, and since ei is pronounced "eye" in german, you could argue for that. However, language evolves, so *shrug*.

I think I say i:'-ðər and aɪ'-ðər about equally, but almost always naɪ'-ðər. Whatevs. Just don't say pee-can.

Pee-can makes most people sound like they are "doing their American accent", mostly, or imitating hicks. It sounds... not-tasty. Seriously, "pee-can pie" does not sound like a delicious dessert I would want to eat, but more like some sort of indecipherable redneck jargon like "fi'nta", or maybe a horrible practical joke. "puh-con" sounds more like... I dunno, it sounds like food to me, and sounds like Chinese sugared pecans and pecan pie and roast pecans and this pecan-stuffed chicken thing my gran makes. It also reminds me of the sort of rare and persnickety wood you get from pecan trees that doesn't really make good learning material for your first bookshelf. "pee-can" just makes me want to snicker and point.
