San Francisco / Vancouver
« on: 04 Sep 2011, 18:57 »

I'm off to North America in two months and I've got a week each in San Francisco and Vancouver. I'm not sure what's fun and interesting to do in each city so fill me in!

SF I was planning on going to Alcatraz, wandering around the Haight and maybe getting a bike and going across the Golden Gate to the big park thing on the other side. Beyond that I have no idea what else is cool.

Vancouver I'm hoping to go to an ice hockey game (where/how does one get tickets?), maybe check out some museums/art galleries? I know next to nothing about Vancouver so any info would be doubly appreciated. Planning on going to see Mayhem when they're playing also.

If you know of any good local bands or non-local that are touring between 8-23rd November in those two cities, fill me in :D

Basically I've arranged my flights and accommodation and nothing else...  :psyduck:

The Haight is pretty much a tourist trap, but it's vaguely amusing. Castro's more fun, but I may be biased due to living there.

These are the things I need to know! Fill me in! I know practically nothing about either city.

Also if people want to hang that'd be cool too. I think I'm supposed to be hanging out with Patrick, Yelley, possibly Fraser in Vancouver and I'm staying with tania in Vancouver so FORUM PARTAY!

Should you believe  anything the state of California says?

When you're in 'Frisco, be sure to visit Ghirardelli square (if you like chocolate), and you can't leave without at least one cable car ride.

And if you're an antique technophile (like me), be sure to visit one of the cable car ... (stations?  Engine rooms?  What the fuck are they called?).  It's amazing watching that 100+ year old technology grind away...

I know the 'Nucks tend to get pretty big crowds Riz, so your best bet would likely be through resellers like StubHub.

Of course, they fuck you royally pricewise. My friend got tickets for a preseason Bruins game through them and we're paying $90 a seat.

don't call it frisco. ever.

if i'm around i'm down for hangouts. i'll pm you my contact info.

if you want to go to alcatraz, buy your ticket online in advance. they always sell out. nobody ever believes me, then they get all sad about not being able to go to alcatraz when they get here.

Not sure if you'd be into this but I would if i could. Monday Oct 10th 2011 Foster The People will be playing the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver.

my fav source of goings on including concert listings in and around Vancouver (Link Below)
http://www.straight.com/

if nothing else they publish the "Red Meat" comic

also Canucks in town on 18th 20th and 22nd playing teh NY Rangers, Nashville Predifiles and Minnesoda Mild.

I'd likely just buy tickets from ticketmaster but they haven't been released for sale yet. (likely a few weeks away)

or something a little cheaper ... Vancouver Giants vs Seattle T-Birds on the 14th. (also ticketmaster :P)

He clearly doesn't love his city enough to not use that abominable truncation of the beautiful moniker it was given, then.

I love just walking around San Francisco. The city is beautiful and has a unique atmosphere.

If you like indian/pakistani food one of my favorite restaurants is the Shalimar at 532 Jones Street. It looks really gritty, but the food is excellent, especially for the price. Try the saag or the chicken tikka massala.

I like the walk up to the Coit Tower, fun and a good view.

and my favorite thing to do in SF is visit the Musee Mecanique at Pier 45 Shed A at the end of Taylor Street, Fisherman's Wharf. As far as I remember there's no entrance fee, just bring around $5 cash to use on the machines there, it's a lot of fun!

If you are still in san Francisco, I'd suggest you go to a dimsung place. There are plenty around San Francisco. Pork buns are delicious there.

Also, if you are going to the beach, do not roll up your jeans and walk in the water thinking yu'll be alright. You will trip and fall adn EVERYTHING will be wet. And you will be miserable.

Not true! The girl had been harmed in some way, and he was there with her until they got help, as far as I remember. He was kissing her in an 'it's okay!' way, rather than 'god these beatings are getting me hot' sorta way.

So my accommodation for my first three nights in San Francisco has fallen through, can anyone recommend a reasonably priced hotel/motel near the city or Castro?

Thanks!

Youth hostels can be! I think when I stayed in SF in '06 I got a bed for $20something/night. In retrospect I may have been in the Tenderloin, now that I think about it...
