Watching that then checking out her youtube page made me really happy I'm getting an education.

Oh, and hey, I guess it is officially a 9.0 earthquake now.

It rather staggers me that anyone can have reached this point. My church would not encourage or indeed allow anyone to spout these views in their name. I had to double-check whether she was a member of the WBC because that seemed the only possible explanation.

Killing them will make them become Christian, don't you see?  That way they will see how loving it is to be killed.

I think she has got herself muddled, frankly. The days of sending down natural disasters to demonstrate God's might ended, according to the Bible, about 2000 years ago.

SHE MAKES ME SO ANGRY.

And check out his "explanation":
Quote
Sulkin apologized on Sunday and deleted the message, explaining that he wrote it when he believed the death toll was lower.
"Yesterday death toll = 200. Today = 10,000. I am sorry for my insensitive tweet. It's gone," he wrote.
Oh, I guess that's all right then, Mr Sulkin obviously really understands what was offensive about his remark.

Edit: Added link to Mr. Sulkin's explanation.

Kinda related.
There are times when I despair of the internet, and then there are times when someone posts a link like this. It took some thought to see how this video was related to my earlier remark, but the penny dropped eventually. Thank you.

Oh, I guess that's all right then, Mr Sulkin obviously really understands what was offensive about his remark.

this reminded me immediately of a kumail nanjiani bit where he describes visiting a family friend's house and listening to this little girl list all of the disney princesses from her favourite disney movies and when she gets to jasmine from aladdin, she loudly proclaims "i don't like jasmine because she's black", to which her mom, overhearing, immediately yells across the house - "JASMINE'S NOT BLACK".

yes yes very good, you corrected... uh, one of the things wrong with what your racist daughter said. don't worry, you'll figure it out eventually.

Are we talking about actual princess characters or princess branding? There haven't been a hell of a lot of princesses in the last 20 years. They only included Pocahontas because that film didn't even bother to get tribal custom (or anything close to a "Native American culture") right, and do they count Esmerelda from Hunchback? I forget.

Megara and Esmeralda are not princesses, no.

The princesses are Snow White, Aurora, Cinderella, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, and now, presumably, Rapunzel- who is white.

Fuck all y'all.

I think we should take their example for how to prepare for and handle crises, though. They haven't asked for money, and all the building damage was caused by the tsunami, not the earthquake. I am pretty sure California would not be able to say the same, if they were in the same situation.

Japan is situated in the most earthquake prone area in the entire world, though. The level of preparedness of most countries for this sort of thing varies directly with how likely they are to occur (provided they are in a country that can afford to do something about it - there are a lot of countries in disaster prone areas with terrible infrastructure because of their poor government and economics). California may be less prepared for earthquakes than Japan (because it is less frequent in California than Japan), but they are still well prepared (because they still get a good amount of earthquakes, being situated on a fault line).

There's also the fact that only a few states of the USA are prone to this sort of thing, whereas all of Japan (to some extent) is vulnerable, elevating it to a national issue - and national issues will always be better funded and organized than something that only effects parts of the nation.

Interestingly enough, recent and new nuclear power stations in the UK and the rest of Europe are supposed to be built to the same siesmic standards as those in Japan, even though the highest siesmic activity recorded is in the magnitude of 100th of the scale.

Since 9/11, new plants in the US are required to be able to take a direct hit from an airplane without malfunctioning. As you could imagine, this has added quite a bit of cost to building a new reactor. So utilities have the option of shelling out $6-12 Billion for a brand new plant or paying for the licensing and analysis to extend their current plant's life an additional 20 years. There are plenty of 30-40 year old reactors in the US that have been given permission to continue operating for an additional 20 years past what they were designed to operate, and at a higher power output than they were originally intended for.

Yeah, she wouldn't be classified as "white". Nor a princess. Meg is also not a princess.

I think the standard few right now are Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Ariel, Belle, and Tiana. Which is annoying, because Jasmine is one of the cooler princesses. And then I don't know what they'll do with Rapunzel. Mulan, Pocahontas, and now Jasmine aren't branded as princesses anymore, or at least not very often. And sometimes Alice gets thrown in there, but I don't know why.

ANYWHO, I think those of you who donated (I haven't yet because I really don't have any money, but will when I do) should go to those blogs and tell people that instead of wasting their energy complaining about world disasters that they should use their time to help out, such as donating money like you did. Not only will you be telling that person that they are an asshole, but you will also be telling people reading the comments that they should donate money, too. It's a win win. Person gets told they're a dickwad and there will possibly be more money for relief!

One of my best friends (and a member of these forums who never posts anymore, Clintaga) is getting a 2-week all-expenses-paid trip to Japan to help build temporary housing for displaced villagers.  A friend of ours who we know from Burning Man (who does quite well for himself as the head of a software company) has decided that the best way to help is to go over there and build yurts and shit, so he recruited my buddy and another burner friend of ours to go with him.

It sounds freaking sweet if you ask me.

I expect Joe meant it sounds nice to go and help people, not that it sounds sweet to live in a yurt rather than a house.

Let's be honest and say that Joe probably also thinks that, in certain circumstances, living in a yurt is sweet as all hell.
