Forgive me if I'm ridiculously out of line, but if the shirt just involves a clever line, would it be any sort of copyright infringement to make it yourself?  I'm not suggesting selling them yourself, but just to go to one of those custom t-shirt sites, find the right font and color, and going to town.

I use the quick reply, otherwise I'd fix the topic in my post.  (And in this one, too)

For curiosity's sake, b/c googling is *slightly* too hard to figure it out exactly... what's the reference/humor exactly? I'm gathering it's from *Neon Genesis Evangelion* -- more info?

Not sure how relevant this is but as a gift for my boyfriend I got him a T-shirt with a quote from Cabin Fever by making it on a custom shirt site. I don't think there should be any issue if it's just a vague line. It'd be different if you were using an image like a drawing from a comic or still from a film.

I suppose, from a strictly bottom line standpoint (EDIT: and questions of right or wrong aside), it depends on whether a custom shirt shop can give you what you want cheaper than Topatoco can. And maybe there is, or isn't, a copyright issue here. But QC merch, I'm given to understand, is a significant part of how Jeph supports himself and his wife, and discussing how to circumvent it -- on a forum he sponsors -- is a pretty shitty move.

When I first read the topic, I started wondering if Dales was some kind of groovy new fabric.

Dales of Norway is a fine line of expensive but nice woolly sweaters and cardigans.

This is true.

Of course, to be fair, the shirt in question was not available from QC / Topatoco when the suggestion to make one was made.  However, Jeph has since tweeted that the Shinji shirt will appear.  It should be worth waiting to see, though, especially as all Jeph's shirts except the original TEH shirt have additional images and design rather than simply the bare text.

[Edited for correctness - I hadn't seen Jeph's tweets before]

PWHodges, I assumed Topatoco from Jeph's tweets about talking to his "merch wizards" and confirming the "Shinji" shirt was going to happen. Sorry if I'm wrong about it being Topatoco and it's good if there'll be some value-added content that makes the "official" shirt stand out from the knockoffs discussed here -- but I reiterate: discussing openly how to circumvent an artist's source of income -- particularly on a forum he provides/helps provide -- is pretty low.

I should point out (what has already been pointed out) that when I suggested that the OP make one of their own, an official option was not yet an option.  Otherwise, I would not have made the suggestion.

Jeph typically changes shirts for the real-life version - presumably he feels it's better.  The "Irony" shirt had a completely different appearance, for instance; the "Unicorn" shirt was a different colour; and others changed that I can't bring to mind.

Also, he never made that Pintsize gravity shirt, which is probably the one shirt I almost certainly would've bought.

Ha, dude, when I suggested it for a few words people gave me shit.  But actually putting one of his characters on a shirt?  That seems to be going a bit too far.

Well, looks like I'll actually be buying QC mercandise. Good call on this idea, Jeph.

@onefish: Shinji has issues.

The main reason why I would buy this shirt is my remembering "End of Evangelion".  I just wanted to reach through the big screen and slap him.

That movie soured me on the entirety of NGE.  So much so that I have not watched any of the Evangelion reboot series.  (Of course it helps that I have way too many shows to watch and not enough time to do it in.)
