Music, gig and stuff on my road
« on: 02 May 2011, 07:34 »

Hey there,

I'm working and living in Europe but some friends and me managed to free a month of our time to cross the water and drive a little in the south of the US, in June.

So, my question is, to all of you who are listening good music or other stuff, any kind of it, and maybe making it, you who know the places to be and the people to go, what would you advise us ? We're looking for gig, every kind of size and genre, parties, clubs, art exhibition, performance, anything, from tiny meetings to giant music festival. Rock, Hip-Hop, Country, Metal, Be Bop, Electro, Blues, Hillbilly, Techno, Traditional stuff, modern, contemporary, revival or anything that you guys strangely call indie or alternative stuff, anything including libraries or bookshop, art&craft guys, fountain of beer, family BBQ, rodeo...

From May 30th to June 24th, anywhere on the road between those major points : Nashville (TN), Nouvelle Orléans, Houston (TX), San Antonio (TX), Albuquerque, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco.

If you don't have any idea, maybe you have idea of where, on line or IRL, we can find this kind of intel ; where, when we arrive in a city, town, village, we have to go to find something : bar, office, campus, bakery...

Thanks to all of you who will take a second to answer to this !

Oh man I would totally love to help you out, but I am going to be sneaky and make a similar request for the West.

 It's OK, you're welcome ; LA and Frisco are not exactly on the East, so I'll benefit the same !

i live near Nashville - may be able to help you out.

There's a pretty great music scene in Knoxville, TN - big college town with a wide array of genre opportunities - in my opinion it's a deeper and more diverse scene than Nashville.

#1 outlet to get in touch with in Knoxville would be the campus radio station at wutkradio.com.

They organize a ton of shows, have a large listener base that actively pursues live music, and can give you a lot of promotion for free.

Thanks alexaub, that's a good start !  :-) I note what you say about Knoxville over Nashville and register the radio station.

If you make it to San Diego (south of LA), try the Casbah. (The site was down right now, but that's a fluke.)

If you get to Santa Barbara (north of LA), try the Mercury Lounge and the Wildcat Lounge.

Frisco

If you're gonna call it by that ugly scar of a nickname, let me research what venues are available in Richmond.

I'm kidding, by the way, I'd never EVER seriously suggest even looking at Richmond on the map, you'd somehow wind up getting shot just because it's Richmond. But like. It's generally frowned upon to call it that. Just fyi.

On a serious note, try contacting Starry Plough in Berkeley (on Shattuck Avenue, below Ashby). They have a very shiny, nice sound system. It has in-ear monitors! And the place is usually pretty well packed. Just be prepared to book a ways in advance.

Also, Slim's in San Francisco is worth giving a call. They don't have in-ear monitors, and I don't know what the conditions for getting a gig are, but it's worth checking up on. I've never been to Great American Music Hall but that's supposedly their sister venue.

I keep this noted. We're now in San Antonio, heading to Austin, where I'm sure plenty of things are waiting for us to go.
Thanks again.

Hey JeBaCo, are you guys making it down to San Diego? If so, what's your band's name and where are you playing?
