Virgin comment thread?

Guess we'll have to be gentile its first time.

I like the way the last week went, and am hoping to see where Jeph is going to take this week.

Technically, all you've done is provide Jwhouk with a couple of weeks off.

Also, I vote we'll see something happen in the comic this week. Maybe something exicting, or Pintsize spreading cake-mix on the walls. Whichever comes first.

Common sense dictates that someone who identifies as female would keep the name Jim, and that employees would use male pronouns behind her back in front of potential business partners?

And probably not that particular friend of Tai's. Well, I tried. And in my earlier post (fixed above; is that proper protocol now that I've been caught?) I meant to say "identifies as a male," as Tai clearly said in the relevant strip but which I got wrong. Bluh. Or maybe, Buh.

I know Dora (and indeed most QC characters) has chronic foot-in-mouth syndrome but she better watch it if she doesn't want Jim to say it's not worth the trouble. Jim looks old enough to not feel like he has to take any shit.

Also, "proper roasting?" I'm just dying to know Dora's secret proccess now

Anyone who can employ Padma and Renee without micromanaging them all day has my vote for a cool dude.

And I'm pretty sure he's just peeved because his gesture of friendship to a stranger (that he's being pressured to do business with) threw his self-depreciating compliment back into his face. Keep in mind this is his first meeting with a competitor of his.

It's a 10% jerk fee. To discourage further jerkery. Herkery jerkery, even.

Why did you had to provide BOTH

AND

?

That was a truely hard choice.

Only thing missing would be an option with Hanners ... I could never come to an decision !

Hey guys, twice already?  I really don't believe that in real life whenever you see a man and a woman talking business for the first time your immediate thought is that they're going to date.  When there is a clear reason to suggest such a possibility here, it can be discussed, but not before - and at present there is no reason at all, not a hint.

Please keep your fantasies to yourself.

For #1926...

1. Again, I like Jeph's side-by-side artistic efforts.  In this case, panel #1 of Faye and Padma side-by-side with similar stances, both of them look great as did Hanners side-by-side with Elliot.

2. Ooh nice a new named character (TSB's Jim)...  There have been a lot of new characters of late.  It would be awesome to see a comparison line-up between Coffee of Doom and The Secret Bakery (once we have the complete TSB cast, still missing "neck-scar dude" if anyone else too) as connecting prints, perhaps with Marten standing in-between the two groups as the "bridge."

example: [Coffee of Doom line-up print] => [Marten] <= [The Secret Bakery line-up print]

3. Jim's stubble could be from coming in during the daytime, since he bakes through the night after The Secret Bakery closes (along with a crew of baking gnomes...? )

3. Despite the slight off-step of first meetings between Dora and Jim, and to use a classic movie-quote per from last week's discussion: "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship...

What is the real life business reason for two small businesses that may or may not be in decent shape to partake in such a deal? It seems to me that Jim would be better off stealing the roasting secrets of Dora and taking her coffeeshop out entirely rather than cooperating and making two somewhat identical coffeeshops. Either they're leaning towards a merge, or this "negotiation" that started out as a joke is going to be utterly idiotic.

Two-way cooperation doesn't need to lead to identical businesses - this seems a perfectly natural thing to me.

As a parallel, there was a time when Minolta and Leitz (Leica) shared camera technology, and a couple of the Leica R-series reflexes were built around Minolta bodies while some Leitz lenses appeared under Minolta's Rokkor name.  Even at the time there was no way they could be seen as identical, though, and in time the partnership broke up.  There is now a similar (possibly closer) partnership between the camera divisions of Leitz and Panasonic.

He might not be interested in stealing Dora's secrets because:

1. He's not Beatrice Chattham

2. He knows that his coffee isn't the best, and because he bakes all night maybe he doesn't want to spend all day/weekend roasting beans with a process he's not familiar with and could screw up.

3. It's an opportunity to sell large quantities of product, without the "less fresh" concerns

So two scientists walk into a bar and decide to have a drinking competition, the first scientist says "I'll have a glass of H20 please". The second scientist says "I'll have a glass of H20 too"

Naturally the first scientist won.

"That's funny, my wholesale price just went up 10% and I have no idea why."

Jeph's probably not going to top that punchline this week. Or even this month, for that matter.

I don't really see tSB and CoD in direct competition with one another (other than the fact that they are both retail fodd establishments.)
The Secret Bakery's main draw is their baked goods, and the coffee they sell is ancillary to their main business, and they also supply other establishments their bread and pastries for further sale.

Coffee of Doom's primary offering is excellent coffee based beverage with a strong helping of scorn and derision. You can't re-sell that!

Dora will now go on to the semi-finals for the Poker-Face championship!

The reason Dora and Jim might do something is called "Synergy".  I do 'A' well and you do 'B' well. A plus B is awsome. So together we'll be great.

The goal (and the biggest hurdle) is money.

I'm thinking at this point that the shipping is being done specifically to annoy Jeph/moderators (or some lame "meta" attempt to control the comic by posting stuff like that specifically to keep it from happening).

Countdown until the shippers start making comparisons between Marten, Jim and Marten's dad and postulating that he looks like a combination of the two and bla bla bla bla bla?  :psyduck:

Uh, what's a "fodd"?

Isn't it something jet engines have to worry about?
