Ok this is like, the third or fourth post I've seen where you type Tia repeatedly. Its TAI. TAI. Its only written repeatedly in this thread. Also, Just lol Steve. That was, just the kind of thing I would say (though, in my case I wouldn't mean it... seriously all my friends would find that funny, even if it was them in Marten's place).

Please enlighten a non-native user of the English language: How do you pronounce 'Tai'?

In my mind I always pronounce her name the same way as I would utter 'tie' (=an item of clothing for men, or a draw in a match). But I am aware of the fact that this may be a result of my default Finnish letter-to-phoneme mapping. So I'm prepared to be very wrong about this. Anyway, I justified it to myself as follows. Her name sounds oriental to me, so it is like 'Thai' with the 'th' replaced with 't'  :-D

Edit: My question has been answered by Pendrake, see further downthread. I thanked him/her with a PM. Thanks all for reading!

For comic #1937...

1. Skewbrow...  You are correct, QC's Tai is pronounced "tie" like a "bow-tie" one wears, or the Star Wars' Tie Fighter for which Tai makes her DJ-name  (#1022, 3rd panel, "Tai Fighter").

2. Ooh, story-arc set-up.  The coming party will be "interesting" to see.

3. Wonder if Steve would feel the same way about his double-standard statement(s) of "taking one for the team" if it was the oppurtunity viewing of Cosette and Tai making out...?

First up, Steve isn't being an asshole to Marten, he's just being a friend. Everyone has one friend like that, the person who makes a little joke about whats happening to someone. The friend who might make fun of you, but who is usually the first one by your side if something terrible happens.

As well as that, if Marten becomes angry at Steve, he isn't going to be angry at Tai, now is he? We all know Marten is a manatee on codeine, but to Steve, Marten is a guy who was recently dumped by his girlfriend, and now has to face the prospect of her dating again (remember, Steve doesn't know how messed up Dora's issues were). To make it worse, Marten knows his boss wants to be the one who goes out with his ex. That can be enough to make anyone angry. So the real question is, are we seeing Steve acting like a jackass, or are we seeing him making sure his friend doesn't do something stupid (and something he will regret) later on?

Oh well, Marten's gonna have to deal with Dora dating someone else sooner or later. Might as well be sooner and get the pain over with. At least Marten knows better than to deal with the pain by getting drunk on hard liquor-hopefully.

[ I think it has been reported that Martin has no pallet for coffee. I seem to remeber one of the c.o.d. staff saying he would drink brown water. And again I want to kill Steve. At least Martin is clued in to what Tia is up to. Too soon Tia shouldnt be making a move yet ~ imo.

Hi Emperor Norton, so sorry about that. I usually check QC at like 6-7am (Irish time) via mobile web - it's not deliberate. Think it may be a combination of predictive text + small screen. Thanks for pointing it out.

As for the too soon comment I think Dora is still finding her feet. So Tai is pushing her agenda a bit too early. But again,  just my opinion.

Well, as much as I wouldn't act like Steve myself in this situation, I'm not completely convinced he's not just being himself with that crack, be it serious or not.

In American English, "tie" and "Thai" are pronounced the same way.

And the "th" is not a reliable diphthong. You'll find that 'thin', 'this', and 'Thomas' start with three different phonemes (/θ/, /ð/, and /t/, respectively.)

(Though I think that 'Thai/Thailand', 'Thomas/Thompson', 'thyme', and 'Thames' are the only four that have the initial /t/ sound, instead of either /ð/ or /θ/.)

Plus a few derivatives and obscure words... a rule I was told for telling if a word begins /θ/ or /ð/ is that "open" classes of words (nouns, adjectives, verbs etc) use the former and "closed" classes (pronouns, conjunctions etc) use the latter. It doesn't entirely work because you have to deduce what to do with adverbs (and no doubt has other exceptions).

Incidentally, "th" is a digraph, not a diphthong.

For those who are truly fascinated by the varying pronunciations of "th" in the English language, Wikipedia has a good article on it. (I blew about a half hour reading it.)

And my brain told me digraph, but my fingers typed diphthong. I blame the "th" in the middle.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled hating on Steve already in progress. . . .

In American English, "tie" and "Thai" are pronounced the same way.
In British and Australian English too. In Chinese, Thailand is 泰国 (Tàiguó, meaning "Thai country"). I don't know how the Thai language is romanized, or how the silent letter "h" came to be used in English. The Thai writing system includes 44 consonants, 15 vowels and 4 tone-marks, which might have something to do with it. There are many words in Chinese that are romanized as tai but all are pronounced "tie" (with various tones of course) as in tai-chi, Taiwan etc.

According to a couple of baby-name websites I looked at, the name Tai is derived from Chinese or Vietnamese. Apparently Tai means "talent" in Vietnamese, but I cannot comment on that because I don't know the language. The Chinese translations given are "from Thailand" (which would be 泰 (tài), but strikes me as unlikely for an English-language given name), or "big" (which I suspect is an inept translation of 太 (tài) which actually means "greatest" or "highest" in that sort of context).

@bunnyThor, Andy147, Akima: Thanks for the bits about pronunciation and the origin of the name 'Tai'. I had to try it out and, indeed, even I pronounce the early part of 'thin' and 'this' differently. I must have picked it up at some point, but would have zero chance to write them phonetically. I was surprised to learn that 'Thai' is pronounced 'tie' and not 'thy', though.

Sorry about going off-topic, again.

For anyone who doesn't follow Jeph's Twitter feed, Dora's AFP T-shirt is a shout-out to Amanda after their little back-and-forward earlier today (good natured, pretty funny to watch as I follow them both).

Also, funny comic. Also answers some of the coffee nerd's points.

So if you drink coffee that's freshly roasted and still degassing, do you burp (or otherwise release gas) for the next 12 - 16 hours?

Sounds uncomfortable...

I would imagine it would have similar effects to drinking a carbonated beverage.

A hot, frothy and disgusting carbonated beverage...

The question is would you WANT to drink such coffee on sight? To go by Faye's description it  doesn't look very appetizing in a cup of liquid...

Hanners has got it wrong, for a change.  The beans are not contributing to global warming, as they are a renewable resource and the next batch is taking back the CO2 from the air as it grows.

That's only if you don't take into account the trucks and the trains and the ships that bring the beans from wherever they grow to NoHo MA, which is not exactly known as one of the great coffee producing regions of the world.

True - but she's concerned with the beans themselves at this point, and the transport and processing would presumably apply similarly to any alternative.

So to avoid contributing to the local greenhouse problem too much we should drink only locally produced beer/ale (presuming of course that your locality can grow the appropriate grains)?

Cool, I'm in.
