It sounds pretty terrible, to be honest. Yes, I'm aware this is extreme speculation.

It has power comparable to a PS3 or 360, and the price point is speculated to be around $350-400.

There are two audiences this can appeal to : the casuals and the hardcores.
Hardcore gamers already have PS3s and/or 360s with similarly powered hardware (with a larger game selection at a much cheaper cost).
Casuals most likely already have a Wii. If you played games once in a while, would you want to drop $400+ when you already have a Wii and the option to play one of the many hundreds of games you probably haven't touched?

I just think they went wrong by going middle of the line graphics and by using old technology at a probable premium price.

I'll be surprised if the Wii doesn't cannibalize on their new system sales.

Thankfully Nintendo is the first to jump on the next-gen wagon. The last thing we as gamers need is bigger and badder hardware in a new Xbox/PS3. The last thing devs need, too.

Nintendo's not responsible for shovelware, but for myriad reasons it seemed like the Wii does not have a terribly diverse set of games outside of first-party titles, probably due to the chilling effect that the difficulties third-party publishers have had. What big wii-exclusive games didn't come out of Nintendo? The only thing I can think of is Epic Mickey, which did really well (1.3 million on a single platform through Christmas), whereas there are a lot of famous duds (Madworld, Boom Blox, the No More Heroes games). It quickly gained a reputation for bad ports of games that were better on other systems. At a certain point wii ports seemed to drop off, except in the cases of, yes, shovelware. Show me a game with simultaneously released versions on every available platform and I'll show you a mediocre-at-best game.

Honestly if someone were to ask my advice I'd tell them not to get a Wii unless new Metroid / Mario / Zelda games alone justified the purchase for them (and they do, for a lot of people), or they absolutely had to have the Wiiware games not available on other services (Toejam & Earl, notably). If they wanted a wider and more diverse palette, I'd advise them to look elsewhere. I'd welcome a return to Nintendo consoles that would try and compete with Microsoft / Sony (it definitely seemed like the Wii was more of a push into new markets, one that was quite successful), but that seems like a slim chance at this point.

I didn't say it wasn't fun, just that it was a pretty significant financial disappointment, which it was. I think the sequel was less so, but I'm not sure on that point.

My brother got Other M and apparently we need to send our Wii off for a hardware update or something. Or is it a software update available through a channel? I hardly ever touch it (its the "family console") so yeah.

The Wii is fun, but after you beat Super Smash Bros a number of times you're pretty much done. My technophobe parents had Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit, which are quite fun but its not like playing Half Life 2 or anything.

This is probably to do with Nintendo's terrible profit figures that were released a short while ago. They were bad. So they're probably upping their game and doing what they did with the Wii - get it out there, first, cheap enough so that everyone and anyone will buy one. Then stay on the brink of the horizon by bringing out stuff like the Motion Plus, various classic nintendo remakes, and hardware.

2014 for new stuff from Sony/Microsoft? The 360 has been out since what, 2006? Thats a pretty good run compared to the 4-5 year runs that we're used to.

Hell to the yes. Gamecube was my first console (YES I'M TOO YOUNG TO REMEMBER THE N64 OK) and I have very fond memories of it that the Wii ruined. Pokemon Colosseum? Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker? (My favourite Zelda game, just sayin') Damn the cube was a good console. I have a 360 now though, and am looking at getting a half decent gaming PC. I'll probably not get this unless it has some awesome N64/Gamecube remakes as well as DS compatability, cos I remember playing Pokemon Sapphire on my TV by connecting it to my Gamecube

I'd like to buy the controller separately. If developers can make it work with the PC (and I know they will), I'm thinking you'll be able to play all your ROMs using the controller while streaming the video from the emulator straight to the controller screen.

I like the idea of any PSX, PS2, N64, Gameboy, SNES, NES, and Genesis game in my hands with a capable controller.

The awkwardness reminds me of my brother's DS Lite. That thing might look cool when it's all folded and that, but hold it for any length of time and my hands started to hurt because there was nothing to grip, just hard lines and accommodating for the buttons.

we'll see if anything changes by the time it hits market. can't say until i actually handle one, but they might do well to use a smaller screen. i wonder if it will use those nice squishy triggers like the gamecube controller had.

Ruined by the fact that the console still doesn't offer an ethernet port.

If you've tried playing multiplayer online with the Wii version, you'll notice that the slight but noticeable response lag makes it unplayable.
