America's Couch
« on: 16 Jul 2011, 21:12 »

Hello forumites.

I am giving very serious thought to an idea that I have been having for about four years now: to travel across the breadth of the North American continent. The catch is pretty magnificent: I have enough money only to pay for my passport's renewal, and a flight to New York, with a bare modicum of disposable income to spare. A thought that has crossed my mind with equal repetition is that it might actually be possible, given the charity of amenable, affable strangers, to dot-to-dot across the USA's brobdingnagian landscape via the hospitality of this forum's American populace. Equally frequently over the past four years, I have considered the idea that I'd perhaps like to write a proper story, a sort of series of picture postcards constructed from written portraits of every type of person willing to put up with a clean, tidy, friendly Brit for two days at the most at a time. I realise entirely how much I am asking from people whose lives have their own gravity, weight and circumference. I do! I really, very much do. If you think my ambition wild and uncouth, tell me, and it will remain exactly that - an unformed ambition only.
If, though, you think that putting up a chatty little limey for a couple of nights is something entirely achievable (and more - something that you'd actually enjoy!) then please, please give me an indication. I await your response excitedly, and fully prepared for any eventuality! Thank you for your various opinions and patiences.

- Rodrick

If you want to go to Ann Arbor, Michigan we can hole you up for a few days no problem. We can also go to Detroit and see the fucking Robocop statue.

I'm in Fargo right now but I'm hoping to move to Minneapolis/St. Paul soon, definitely a much better place to visit.

Either way I'm in! Come sleep on my couch!

Have they started construction on that yet? I only heard that that they had enough money for it. It would be cool if it was finished by the time Detroit Fanfare starts, what with Robocop being there

Not yet, I think they are still finalizing the design. If it's not done while I'm in Michigan I'm going to murder someone.

I've actually just recently discovered a site called Couch Surfing. From my (admittedly, limited) experience, it seems like a fairly self-regulating place, and I've been talking to some interesting people. Depending on when yr come through Buffalo area, I may or may not be able to help you, I don't plan on staying here for long, but we'll see how it goes.

Couch Surfing is absolutely the way to go -- a handful of friends of mine frequently take in traveling delinquents such as yrself.

If you need a place in DC I could probably talk to my mom. I'll second Leslie's suggestion to hit up Couchsurfing.

Ann Arbor, Michigan

Have you been to Flat Top restaurant yet? It is right next to Qdoba and was one of my favorite places to go while in school.

Where in AA are you moving to? I work at Domino Farms on the NE side of the city. Let me know when you get settled in and I'll take you out for a beer.

We're moving into an apartment over on Emmit Street in Ypsilanti, right off of Washtenaw Ave. Not teeeechnically Ann Arbor, but close enough. I'd definitely be happy to take ya up on the outing offer!
