And has Raven always had a kanji tattoo, or is that something new? (and can anyone read it?)

from the strip by strip wiki: 410: Raven's Tattoo (Kanji for "Princess")

In Mandarin that character is pronounced "ji"1, and can mean "concubine". Just sayin'.

We've had both versions of the Kanji that have appeared explained by our resident expert: here and here.

And then Marten was transformed into a  bowl of petunias and his only thoughts were merely "Oh no, not again"

And then, through a series of improbable machinations (involving Jim and/or HannerMom if you want, but I won't insist upon it), CoD is transformed into a nightclub and renamed Stavro Mueller Beta ...

I'm aware of the contextual complexities of chinese, and the myriad meanings that an individual character can take on when modified by its neighbors; I went crazy studying it. My assumption has always been that Jeph was aware that that particular character could mean both "princess" and "concubine", and that was the hidden humor behind it.

Love Raven's expression in Panel 3. Not surprised a bit, but proud, even a bit smug. "Exactly as planned".

Which archived strip did the old guy ask for the commissioned espressosaurus?

I'll be eloquently blunt: I would visit no fewer than a thousand passionate ravishing's upon Raven's person, posthaste.  If she were real.  And open to the idea.  And just as much because of her mind as her body.  Again, if she were real.  I'll stop now.

Many of the secondary and incidental characters bear a remarkable likeness to main characters.

Either there are only so many faces Jeph can draw, or it's a much smaller new england town than we realized...

What in the world? What kind of insane troll logic is that? (not refering to Near Lurker, but to whoever near Lurker is quoting.)

Not exactly that, but a while ago on his Twitter, Jeph admitted to liking a game based on Card's Empire series, and said that if you bought it you should give to GLAAD to offset the royalties, and then went on to defend this stance against a number of replies.

Personally I fail to see the relevance of the comment at all. It probably just went over my head, but I don't see any connection between Adams and the LGBT agenda.

There isn't one.  My point was that I thought at first it was a reference to Scott Adams, and I was surprised to see a neutral-to-positive reference to him in light of the controversies surrounding him in the last few months.

And how many times does it have to be established that this takes place in Northampton (a small city) before people from the land where cities are all about waving their populations at each other get it through their heads?

For comic #1979...

1. Ooh, new Dora hair style, rather than color (it was about her time for a change too?).  Different, yet still black...  I think I like it ;) .

2. "Parallel entanglement processing core."  Raven is becoming quite fluent in the techno-babble.  It might be interesting to see Raven spending more time with Hannelore &/or Marigold for science/techno- comedy interaction.

3. As I mentioned before, I will be very interested in seeing how the "Faye Whitaker: Barista Artiste" (either that or "Faye Whitaker: DinoBot Barista" ) story-angle will fare and develop, now with a high-profile art gallery showing.

Faye thanking the gallery owner in German (and with umlaut, so I assume pronouncing correctly) reminds me of a strip way, way back where she first went to Dr. Corrine wearing a German national football/soccer team training jersey. Can't see any other explanation for her suddenly saying "Do you know who that guy is?", when it's not the first time they've all met.

Apart from suddenly making a mental connection... nah, too obvious.

It was a rhetorical question, since she then says who that guy is.

Edit: As for why she didn't tell Faye who he is when he first commissioned the thing, it's possible Dora only found out later.

Quantum entanglement is a physics thing, and being concerned (loosely!) with action at a distance is appropriate to refer to here.  It's a compsci thing only to the extent that it might be involved in some aspects of quantum computing.

My assumption has always been that Jeph was aware that that particular character could mean both "princess" and "concubine", and that was the hidden humor behind it.
I've never been sure how far Jeph's playing with Raven's tattoo is intentional. In its first appearance the tattoo was in Chinese (公主) while Raven thought it was Japanese, and I assumed that was part of the joke considering the general cluelessness of getting tattoos in a language you cannot read. Jeph has now corrected the tattoo to , which is the Japanese variant of the Chinese , (which, as you point out, is pronounced and can indeed mean "concubine"). Playing with multiple meanings of characters is a very Chinese thing to do, and certainly in Raven's case the double meaning is very appropriate, so maybe Jeph is slipping us a Bilingual Bonus. A third, rather archaic, usage of means "female entertainer", which is also remarkably apposite. Props for taking the trouble to include the tone number in your romanization BTW, though I prefer the more elegant diacritics even if they are more difficult to type.

And yeah, Dora has already met Herr Beardedgalleryguy, so why the reaction? Does he have a German accent, prompting Faye's Teutonic thank-you? Did Faye learn more than swordsmanship from Dietrich Himmelfeuer? Will Dora get her 10% commission? Curious minds want to know.

I don't think he's German. Your anal analysis of Raven's tattoo is pretty sexy though.

And of course there has to be a market.  And as she makes more and more Faye will need to turn to the local sweatshop to have those twelve year olds assemble them cheaply so she can maintain her profit margins

This is not a continuity error.  It's proof that Dora has indeed been replaced by a replicant.  As per my hot sexy fanfiction.

Can't see any other explanation for her suddenly saying "Do you know who that guy is?", when it's not the first time they've all met.

Apart from suddenly making a mental connection... nah, too obvious.

Dora in panel 4 looks scarily like one of my cousins, only with shorter hair.  And I like how the shading on her hair is done in that panel as well.

I was watching "Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman" and Quantum Entanglement is most def a real thing and one of the more bizarre aspects of physics.

I'll be eloquently blunt: I would visit no fewer than a thousand passionate ravishing's upon Raven's person, posthaste.  If she were real.  And open to the idea.  And just as much because of her mind as her body.  Again, if she were real.  I'll stop now.

Since her mind is a projection of Jeph's imagination, I'd say that makes you gay.

Hmm... Raven's a physics major?  "Parallel entanglement processing core" sounds like kind of a compsci thing...

I thought she used a Flux Capacitor

And thus, the Espressosaurus arc comes to a close. It shall be missed.

Until the Mk. III gets built.

We still haven't seen whether the coffee is as amazing as Raven calculated.
Quick resolution? Brick joke? We shall see. Unless we don't.

I'll read the thread in a bit; the poll is most interesting, with that nice curve from least to most recent. Were the more recent ones really better, or do forumgoers just have short memories?

Well, I like seeing Corsetto's take on anything,  but Milholland, as observed by others, pushes all the right buttons and pushes them hard. The combo of Milholland, Pizza Girl and Hanners, seasoned by Faye threatening to go round the bend once and for all, probably knocked it out of the park for Milholland as far as the forum poll goes.
