I'm afraid that, with those choices, the correct answer is 0%.

That won't change anything.  The point is simply that no answer appears with its own probability, and that would remain true.

Now consider:
Code: [Select]
A: 50%
B: 25%
C: 50%
D: 75%

That's really no better...  B is correct, but so are either A or C, so you really have a 75% chance of being right, but that makes D correct, but the chance of picking that one is 25% and we're back to B again.

Get rid of one of the 50's and it'll work.  Better yet,

A) 0%
B) 25%
C) 50%
D) 75%

then see how many pick A...

Oh! I remember seeing my friend post this on Facebook. It's kind of a Hofstadter sort of Strange Loop - it's recursive logic. It's actually really simple.

The chance of choosing the right answer is 1 in 4 - 25%. But since there's two choices for 25%, the chance is actually 50% - but since there's only a one in four chance of choosing 50%, the answer is *really* 25% - but since there's two 25% answers, that means the real real answer is actually 50%.  . .

Exactly.  So the probabiity of choosing the correct answer epended on which answer you chose, and when chosen, the answer would be different.  That's why 0% was the actual probability with the original choices - you're fucked no matter what.

Paul's option wasn't really any better!

Unfortunately, mine works, which makes it much less entertaining.  Until you grade them, that is.  then you find that less than 25% will get the right answer - generally, students do worse than random on probability questions!

Following some ridiculous images being posted, I set the forum to limit the size of displayed images automatically; that happened to this image.  I tried removing the size limitation (that's why I'm shown as having edited it), but the forum software put it back.  I've now made the reduced image a link, so that clicking it will show it without the forum limitation.

The thread had got stupid long, and was behaving strangely (like going to the wrong post for next unread); so I split it a few weeks ago and changed the title a bit.  The old one's still around if you want to find something from it.

Agreed so much with this that I had to briefly check that I hadn't somehow written it myself whilst in a fugue state or some such.

why the iPad isn't The Future
It's all well and good to claim that devices without tactile feedback suck, but the thing is, we rely on visual feedback from almost all of the technology we use. That isn't going to change, because relying on one sense puts a limit on how well you can implement methods of interaction with other senses. In other words, if you absolutely want to utilise force feedback on your smartphone, you'll have to get rid of the screen. And even without the screen, there aren't many non-portable interface devices that take full advantage of human tactile capabilities. The best we can currently do is force feedback from a keyboard (or anything with buttons). Gamers may even use proprioception when playing games with a mouse. But properties like shape, pressure, texture and temperature are useless for interacting with technology because getting any sort of feedback from it requires the physical presence of the object itself to change. And that's practically impossible.

But hey, at least he made a nice-looking page layout.

I don't see why it would be too unrealistic to expect that, with our ever-growing understanding of the way our physical senses work and the fact that (in my limited understanding) it's something to do with electrical impulses, technology could some day replicate the sensation of touching something in 3D, on a 2D screen - or even a projection.

The somatosensory system is very well understood, but to replicate that kind of sensation you'd at least need a couple dozen electrodes implanted into your arm. (Though I bet people wouldn't hesitate to do so if they had Apple written on them.) Even then, you'd still have to deal with the lack of physical presence of an object; you'd be able to feel a simulated object, only your hand goes right through it.

@ Carl-E - I'm thinking suddenly of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - the part where Zaphod has found the radio station he wants, and is now sitting as painfully still as possible so any accidental movements don't change the station on him. (A flying pencil scrambles it all in the end anyways, though)

All but the third gif are hotlink-blocked. But that third one is awesome because the white cat is basically looking on, stunned, at what the other one is doing.

Pfffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffftokay.

(When I previewed it, it didn't have a hotlink blocker. Odd.)
