May, it's not that it's cheaper to serve pizza than veggies, it's that it's cheaper to insist that 2Tbsp of tomato paste has the same nutritional benefits as the 1/2cup of tomato sauce the legislation originally required to count as a serving of veggies.

AKA yay lobbyists!

P.S. why the hell does the American Frozen Food Institute even exist?

Oh, I know all about the stupidity of the "nutrition" legislation for American schools, I follow a couple of blogs on the subject. I was reacting to DrPhibes' comment that he eats healthily every dinner if pizza is a veg, and that he's a poor student. I've found I spend far less on food when I cook for myself than when I buy in processed stuff.

Cooking for yourself is the best  way to spend less and eat better.  I did very well cooking for myself when I was working away from home, as did my wife.  Now that I'm back home, we're both back into making "comforting family dishes that are cheap" and, as a result, quite fattening...

So the 20 pounds I lost are all back again... :-P

Having just moved out of the house I find it's often hard to buy and cook just enough for one person. My parents make sure to cook every dinner we eat with fresh produce, but all the recipes that have accumulated at home over the years are for 4, and I can't just pick one of those, divide by four and find out I have to buy 1/4 broccoli.

So, tonight, hamburgers! Self-assembled ones, anyway.

Buy a freezer and cook for four, then freeze three portions! And that's dinner sorted for three nights in the future. So useful when you get madly busy some weeks.

Funny, the comment is actually directed at the woman, specially because of her smile.
Both are quite correct considering the people I see when I walk in town: Fat chick with thin guy and viceversa.

And I would strongly advise that when you make new stuff, stack it under the old stuff. That way the stuff you make first is less likelt to end up with lots of freezer burn on it.

Did you really need to answer me like that? Really?
I wasn't being sarcastic in my previous comment. I honestly didn't thought about the male version until you commented on it... If I'm quoting in a friendly way I sure as hell don't need rude sarcasm in return. It's the least I ask for.
I'm pretty sure those weren't your intentions though  :-) But it did sound unnecessary and rude to me...

Ask yourself why exactly you ascribed the "Now I can get fat" thought to the woman, as I am sure the creator of the captioned image intended, and why both of you thought it was funny. What sort of assumptions about women's body-image, goals, and general place in society, are involved in that kind of humour? In my original comment, I flipped the assumptions around to draw attention to them, in a light-hearted way, and to the low-level misogynism involved in the joke. So no, I didn't need to be told that that I'd got it all wrong, and that really the caption was supposed to apply to the woman. I got that, really I did, right from the beginning. That was the whole point. I apologise for my sarcasm, which was perhaps sharper than necessary, but did you think I was too stupid  to get the joke or something?

OK Akima I do see what you're saying but you seem to spend a lot of time reacting aggressively to people's jokes. The photo was almost entirely of the woman, it is hardly an assumption that a caption refers to the subject of the photo. Yes, the joke is possibly indicative of a wider issue of sexism etc but is it really worth firing off about?

Maybe everyone should just adopt a policy of counting to ten and letting most things slide. Life gets a lot less stessful if some things take a lower priority.

Also, you can laugh at things that are sexist and racist and bigoted without being any of those things. It is acknowledging and laughing at a stereotype or old way of thinking.
Its like how I can tell my girlfriend to make me a sandwich and her and I and my housemates have a good laugh. Then she makes me a sandwich because she knows her fucking place. (actually it is because she likes to do cute little things like make my lunch and write love notes to put in the bag)

The only way I initially reacted to the joke image was to flip the assumption around and apply the caption to the man. What I "fired off" about was the follow-up post telling me "No no no, you've got it all wrong. It's the woman!" Yeah, I got  that, but my sarcasm was heavy-handed. Mr. Doctor called me out on that, so I tried to explain my reaction, and apologised for it. <shrug>

Also your apology was couched in overly aggressive terms. The entire tone of the majority of your posts seems to lean towards hostility and negativity. You're overly confrontational and almost always a chore to have to converse with. Which is a shame because you appear to have really valuable opinions and the content of your posts is almost always appreciated. If you constantly think the worst of everyone you come into contact with I can't imagine you're having a good time, most of the time. Don't ascribe to malevolence what can easily be ascribed to stupidity, or in this case, a simple misunderstanding.

Tesco Value Baked Beans and Sausages are pretty much my diet for the next two years.

Mmmmm....

Had these two nights in a row on some thick slices of reduced bread, it was pretty delicious. But I wouldn't recommend it for two years. Buy some dry pulses (less than £1 a bag, some less than 50p), some chopped tomatoes (33p), tomato puree (50p), seasoning (50p) and you've got yourself about 4 dinners right there, for lets say £4. But you can use them for another 8-12 dinners, meaning that £4 equates from £1 a meal initially to 33 pence a meal in the long run, and its nutritious!

Next time on Dinner with Lupercal: how to turn those dried on bits of cereal still in the bowl into a tasty, refreshing snack!

Like all the jokes related to races and immigrants I make all the time (while being an immigrant myself)... I make a lot of jokes against chileans.Makes all my swedish friends so uncomfortable.  :-D

No harm done, Akima. I'm just glad that I understood why you got pissed off and viceversa... In the end it was just a misunderstanding.
