Yeah, that's how I read it.  He can't bring himself to smack Spider-man with the stick.  He loves Spider-man.

Also, I see that it's from Parenting.Failblog.Org.  I don't know.  If you've raised a kid who is so compassionate that he won't "hurt" a Spider-man pinata, that's not necessarily a failure.

Happy pi day!  (3/14).

I know, a bit late for everyone other than US folk...

Also for eurodating, where it's 14/3, and so you have no pi day...

One of our grad students posted this on facebook.  Clearly, he has too much time on his hands, and too much beard on his face...

We have 22/7 for pi approximation day, which is actually closer to pi than 3.14.

Well, unless her other hobbies were molesting children, yes.

I don't know if you are aware of a UK's CRB checking system - which checks people's criminal records before they are allowed to work with children.  I recently came across a case where a teacher with forty years experience, which didn't require her to have a check, retired, but was not legally able to return to the same school as a volunteer until she had filled in the forms (and paid £45) for a check.  There's nothing like consistency!  Oh, and checks are not transferable - if you work part-time at several places, you need several identical checks.

Not necessarily, given that women are far less likely to be branded as pedophiles for the same behavior.

I just found out that Alan Turing committed suicide. Even though this happened a long time before I was born, I feel pretty sad about that.

Yeah, after being persecuted for being gay, chemically castrated, and barred from his work because he was found guilty of homosexuality.

The fact that he was an incredible genius and shaped the face of the world with his work? Irrelevant!

Not to mention that he had materially helped win the war to save the country that did that to him.  He was shamelessly hounded to his death, no two ways about it.

Incidentally, there is an excellent biography of Turing, Alan Turing, The Enigma, written by Andrew Hodges, an Oxford don (who is, however, not a relative of mine, and I've never had occasion to meet him).  The book is very detailed, and has an extended discussion of whether his death really was suicide or not (without being able to come to a categorical conclusion).

Seconded. It is indeed an excellent book, with a near-perfect match between biographer and subject.

Shafting scientists who helped you win your wars seems to be a bit of a habit. Qian Xuesen (usually given as Hsue-Shen Tsien or H.S. Tsien in English language sources) is another example, though unlike the tragic Alan Turing, Qian lived to a ripe old age.

To think that some people had the gall to rename these particular Reed-Solomon codes to QRcodes. I know, I know, Wikipedia calls them that way. But the people who really know - the researchers of the theory of error-correcting codes reserve the term QR-code for  "Quadratic residue codes" - a beautiful number theoretic concept from the golden age of coding theory. :psyduck: :psyduck: :psyduck: :psyduck: :psyduck: :psyduck:

</math_nerd>

When I get a round tuit, I should probably write a disambiguation note to Wikipedia as well as correct the numerous errors in related articles. Naah, prolly not worth my time. Anyone trusting Wikipedia deserves what they get.

Well, at least I know what they're called now, even if it's not really the "right" name for them.  All I know is that they suddenly started appearing on everything and seem to have replaced UPC codes, but sometimes I'm supposed to scan them.  Since I have a dumb phone, this does me no good, and I have no idea what's supposed to happen if I scanned them.

In my experience, they tend to be pretty redundant. They never seem to contain any more information that could've been written in the same space. Plus, given the fact that most people won't / can't scan them, they tend to be accompanied by the same information, written in plain text.
That's not to say that they don't have their uses, but they seem to be used mostly in inconvenient or pointless ways.

I print out a QR code boarding pass, and the guy at the gate scans it; in fact, I can display it on my iPhone, and the reader can take that too, to be really green.

That works just as well with old-fashioned barcodes. They're used for printable train tickets. Though admittedly it won't be much use when displayed on an LCD screen.

I once saw a guy on the train who was wearing a white jacket with giant QR codes (or RS codes, learned something today) printed all over it.

Also, for a while the university cafeteria had coffee cups with codes printed on them. It apparently didn't occur to them that the print gets curved on a cylindrical cup, making the code really hard to scan.

I'm sure it can. And in a way I'm glad to see a new application for the RS-codes. The underlying math is old hat, though. The same error-correcting codes have been used to recover from the scratches on CDs. It was just so annoying to see questions about QR codes on a math forum, and then see that the questioner meant something totally different with the term (still within my expertise, no problem there). I was further aggravated that the proponents of quick response codes had replaced some of the well established standard coding theoretical terminology with some very confusing substitutes. For example, in coding theory a codeword refers to an entire encoded block. Here they mean a single byte, which is more commonly referred to as a symbol (something like a single letter of a word). I was relieved to see that the other coding theorists on the forum were similarly annoyed.

Sorry, all. Somebody calling this "QRcode" just rubs me the wrong way for reasons that would take too long to explain.
