You're completely entitled to your views on marriage, I can think of a lot of good points against it, but those are Old Testament examples... from like 3000 years ago. Not any more.

The idea of 2 people making a vow before their particular spiritual figurehead is okay in and of itself (in my opinion), the issue I have with marriage is the practice of the woman taking the man's name. It's a remnant of a time when women were property, and 1. doesn't have any legitimate place in modern society, and 2. really screws with record-keeping.

I think this is relevant here.
You know, I considered that possibility, but then I thought "This is the 21st century, we don't have to deal with religious nutjobs trying to undo decades of societal development and emancipation anymore." Silly me, thinking that applies to the whole world.

Wait, not pointless enough. Here, watch someone clean windows faster than you will ever do.

Whilst I am leery of making any more points in a pointless thread, this is kind of what I meant - my 'legitimate reasons' are that the current model is based on outmoded ideas of property and ownership. Pardon my frankly unnecessary blue tongue in expressing them - held in a cell in a less objective part of my mind there is always a little man screaming "MARRIAGE BAD" over and over.

Without meaning to clog up the pointless thread, I have to admit I'm very torn on this issue. I also have problems with the historical roots of marriage being about property and social control, and I have serious issues (even as a Christian, or maybe I mean especially as a Christian) about the continuing patriarchal nature of the institution. I will never take my husband's surname. However, I do think that marriage has value in providing a framework (not the only framework, I freely admit) for committed relationships, which I think are the best situation to raise children in. Note I didn't say that marriage is the best situation to raise children in - you can have a committed relationship without marriage or even without any legal or biological links between family members.

Anyway this is getting very discussy.

Yeah, what if? For reasons I don't fully understand, my second wife had to think about taking my last name. She apparently didn't think Ball was cool. Maybe it didn't help she was teaching in an inner-city high school.

Well! I never heard that one before!

Actually, the joking tended to be numerical: In fact, Clara and I would have been a quartet of balls.

The kids at her school called her, naturally, Mrs. Balls. In 9th grade, some kids called me "Balls of Fire!" Always with the exclamation point.

In my 20s, in the Army, I told people my blonde hair and blue eyes were deceiving. My ancestry was Greek; my great-grandfather's name was changed at Ellis Island; immigration officials thought Testicles (pron: TEST-i-clees) wouldn't work. My memory is that that kind of a joke about my name discouraged jokes from others.

OTOH, if any group can come up with new puns and plays on the name, it'll be this one. Damn!

Awesome, and hadn't heard it before.
Another attributed to Beecham: The cello soloist was having a bad rehearsal: Beecham is said to have stopped the rehearsal to tell her: "Madam, you have between your legs one of the greatest instruments that God has devised for man's pleasure, and all that you can do to the damned thing is scratch at it!"
