Youtube commenters assure me that this Evan Longoria fellow faked the whole thing using clever live television CGI editing. Which tells me less about the veracity of the actual video, and more that Youtube commenters get riled up whenever anyone does something physically or mentally impressive. Which I suppose could be taken to be evidence of the physical and mental capabilities of the average youtube commenter.

The vid was an advertisement for Gillette, actually, and so is a fake:

Ah, there it is: http://offthebench.nbcsports.com/2011/05/16/fake-or-real-evan-longoria-saves-reporter-with-bare-handed-catch-video/

The first hint is that the reporter's mic has no indication of what station she's interviewing for.

It got that, though I had to look up crotchet (I probably heard it from Jack Aubry or Stephen Maturin). But it took me too long to recognize the role of the treble clef symbol.

What happens when a Bluegrass band (Jerusalem Ridge) plays live with an orchestra (Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra).  Was that part of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony on a banjo I just heard?

Ugh, stealing bikes is a really low thing to do.

I lived in a small town and stealing a man's means of transportation is just wrong. In the old west they´d have strung you up for stealing a horse!

Not actually convince that is a "trend".  The people in question are all heavily modified and did it for the filming of an episode of Taboo.  It seems like none of them have done it before from the video, but are playing it up for the camera.  "looook at what freaks we are!!!"

Yeah, keep in mind that this is probably a trend like Tongue Splits, Eye Tattooing and Magnetic Implants are. Saline Injections (in various body locations, namely genitals) have been around for a rather long time and a few dozen, to a few hundred, or maybe a few thousand folk world wide doing something , over the course of 5 - 15+ years, does not a trend make. Also, I'd probably say Argentina is one of the more common locations for that style of procedure.

Here is the Taboo video of the procedure.

I believe Shannon posted about the saline injections on facebook and/or modblog. It's definitely not a new thing, nor is it a trend. Still weird though.

Yeah, this here was his response to the recent explosion in headlines about it.

http://news.bmezine.com/2012/09/24/the-so-called-latest-trend-bagelheads/

BME has a pretty massive image gallery of it going back to the 90's as well as a couple of articles and interviews that are several years old. I don't find it all that odd honestly, or at least not any more odd than any other thing that people do to themselves for fetish, entertainment and whatever other reasons, especially since it's temporary.

Direct proof: "P is true, see?"
Proof by construction: "P cannot be false because here is a case where it is true."
Proof by contradiction: "Q is known to be false. If P is true, then Q is true. Therefore, P is not true."
Proof by exhaustion: "All cases of P can be formed as a case Of X or Y. X and Y are both true. Therefore, P is true."
Proof by induction: "P is true in the case N = 1. P is true in any case N+1 following case N. Therefore, P is true for all cases where N is an element of the set if positive integers."
Proof by handwave: "P is true because it is. Happy? No? Tough."
