I'm rather appreciating Momo's expression in the back of the first panel there. Obviously she likes eels a great deal more than snakes.

I don't understand why they don't have a first aid kit with them. I really just want to slap some band aids onto Sam.

Added: Looking back it's occurred to me that they don't seem to have brought anything with them, including water bottles. Other than some vanishing bug spray. Maybe they've got bags we just keep not-seeing. Probably it doesn't really matter.  :-)

Had a bit of snark here about that gal Natalie Portman played, but I realized how irritated I get by some of the "MartEn" folks.
Yeah, I've liked Padma since she showed up. Sweet but ditzy with a touch of sass, without guile, though I'm still wondering if she is way sharper than she lets on.

You know, when you describe her that way, she sounds more like Raven. Though Padma's rack isn't quite as awesome (not that I'm complaining)

I really just want to slap some band aids onto Sam.

My wife, who has done research into various aspects of skin, strongly prefers to leave cuts and grazes uncovered to dry out and scab naturally, unless they cannot be managed without protection or containment of bleeding.  Obviously cleaning them first is not discouraged, though.

Okay, Padma gets a pass because Mother Nature always loves to be a douche when you least expect it. Mother Nature saw Padma tempting fate, and gave her a serious warning.

Will the hike end tomorrow? Or will there be more hijinks?

My money's on hijinks, naturally.

I really just want to slap some band aids onto Sam.
I started to 'fix' this as:
I really just want to slap Sam.

But then I realized that wasn't enough.
I really just want to bite Sam.

Repeatedly. With my posoi venemu hot death fangs. 'Bitey,' my ass. Damn kid is asking for it, and Elliot makes it sound as though it's high time she got it.

Okay, I don't want to actually kill her (even if she's not real). It'd be enough to make her swell to about three times her normal size for eight hours, hurt like hell for twenty-four, and twitch uncontrollably every time thereafter she spots an innocent snake. Although my guess is she'll still keep grabbing and imprisoning them; I strongly suspect the late Steve Irwin managed to slip one into whosname's ex-wife.

I'm thinking, with Elliot mentioning how she names all her captured critters "Bitey", that Sam DOES get it, every time she grabs some wild creature. (And by "it" I mean getting bitten). For all we know, she may very well have already had a near-death encounter with a rattler, and I agree that she seems like the type of kid who would be completely unfazed by it (much like Mad Cat's falling out of a tree as a young girl, as she mentioned in this thread, didn't stop her from climbing right back into one soon as her bones knit).

The snake seems to like her well enough now, even though it got rather dizzy in the fall. Maybe it's not a venomous or vicious kind of snake?

I imagine that Samantha takes them home every time she goes bushwalking, asking her dad if she can keep it as a pet, which her dad refuses. (Hence why she apparently always names them "Bitey")

EDIT: Consider that the last time we saw a large amount of shrubbery in the background, it looked like this. And I STILL thought that was fantastic. Yet that's how much he's improved in a short time.
(No I don't care that it might have been based off a real place, it still counts :P )

Oh god I hope the comic moves to LA so I can finally lord my knowledge of it over all you Massholes oh god ohgod hogod.

Probably not gonna happen, but a Californian can dream, can't he?

It would be an awesome shift, though. New architecture, a refocus on Marten, an onslaught of new characters to declare our like or dislike for, big city issues...

1. That's about as direct as we've EVER seen Marten be towards a female he wasn't dating. Pretty low key, and yet as obvious as a fire alarm. The problem being that...

2. Padma retains her title as Queen of the Oblivious.

However...

Yeah, I've liked Padma since she showed up...though I'm still wondering if she is way sharper than she lets on.

...I'm wondering if the "move" isn't a ruse to get Marten to stop being anxious regarding Elliot.  :|

If Padma wouldnt have proven again and again that she's missing out the obvious, I would have guessed she tried to just avoid the issue.

Jeph, if you want to keep drawing outdoor scenes you need to update your characters' colors a bit. [...]
I honestly have downloaded the picture without checking the text and then tried to figure out for several minutes what the heck the diff was ... so unless you know what to look for, or are an expert for this, one honestly doesnt notice the difference at all.

Y'know, gotta say, she seems a bit dim at times, but I'm really starting to like Padme.
Oh, I always liked Padme.

Padma is a different issue, though.

For a second I thought Padma was going down.
From the looks of it, that would have been a much deeper fall ... and her undoing.

Perhaps that's how Sara really ended up - "tempted fate, got blown away atop Mount Tom".
Who ?

Seriously, who cares about Sara.

2. Padme retains her title as Queen of the Oblivious.

I would be very surprised if Marten chose to move to LA following a woman who he wasn't even sure was into him, especially after what happened with his ex Vicki. You will recall he ended up in New England in the first place following her from California, and that didn't end well for him. And they were in a relationship (that was already dying, but Marten didn't get that memo).

Marten's not dumb or infatuated enough to repeat that mistake. So no Padma for him.

I don't think Marten is even close to considering moving back to LA. I think it's more of the fact that for the first time since the whole Dora breakup, Marten has finally found somebody he has an interest in pursuing, only to have it snatched away right from under him. It's an extension of his infinitely bad luck regarding women.

At any rate, I believe this allows Marten to retain his "Character most deserving of a break and a hug" award. Poor guy.

Jeph, if you want to keep drawing outdoor scenes you need to update your characters' colors a bit.

Their coloring remains city-moody, which makes them appear like carton cut-outs when contrasted to the nature around them.

I propose you introduce some single cell highlights on their darker parts of skin and clothes to accompany the single cell shadows.

Not forever, just for the nature scenes. That way you won't have to draw highlights in every comic.

Here's what I mean, I threw this in literally 3 minutes 45 seconds. Select the highlight areas, Hue/Saturation, up the brightness by 20%, up the saturation by 5%. I also added an extra sky blue layer set in normal mode but only at 5% to produce a more uniform color palette all around.

[...]

I think It would really compliment the outdoors scenes.

Just a friendly suggestion, keep up the good work!

-JDS

-edit- no, not as much brightness as 20%. Try it at 10-15%, in retrospect it works better.
I think the blue filter is actually darkening some of the warmer skin tones, there.

1. Samantha goes over a physical cliff.
2. Padma almost goes over a physical cliff.
3. Padma sends Marten over an emotional cliff
(not that she meant to).

At least Jeph didn't end the week with a cliffhanger.

Maybe instead of reading the whole week we could just have looked at the Cliff Notes.

The background art this week absolutely blew me away...

*chorus of boos, tomatoes*

More seriously, I'm kind of wondering exactly what it is about Padma's baking (ahem) that's infatuating Marten. Does she have some aspect to her personality that he's seen which doesn't include "letting everything Marten says fly over her head"?

No really, come to think of it, the VAST majority of his interactions with Padma involve her not really understanding what he's trying to say.

Hope this doesn't get buried under the slew of other comments.

Poor Marten, guy can't catch a break. Ever.
And I actually liked Padma. Sad to see her go. )=

I'm not sure what it is about her, but I guess Marten did fall for her after all.

I can't get over the fact that it looks like they're standing in front of a quite badly painted backdrop.

I'm sure there's a chicken noodle soup joke in there somewhere, but I just lack the imagination.

I think Jeph mentioned in one of his tumblr question dumps that Marten's probably from the SF area.

Either that or San Diego.

So now what?

Cut scene to the emergency room and a hysterical Jim.    - 2 (2.6%)
Are you kidding? She dusts herself off and holds the (very dazed) snake in TRIUMPH!    - 31 (40.3%)
Cut to the ER, but she's only got a few stitches.    - 1 (1.3%)
The fall wasn't that bad. Only a few meters down.    - 1 (1.3%)
She's done this before. The ER doctor tells Marten so.    - 10 (13%)
It's worse than that she's DEAD JIM!    - 8 (10.4%)
Cut scene to Jim visiting CoD and gushing about his smart little girl.    - 2 (2.6%)
She's okay, they check on her, she shows them the snake... and it bites Momo.    - 3 (3.9%)
...and it bites Marten.    - 4 (5.2%)
...and it bites Padma.    - 1 (1.3%)
Waffles will make it all better.    - 2 (2.6%)
I just LOVE the backgrounds! (Forget the storyline right now.)    - 12 (15.6%)
