If I remember correctly, May and I are of a very similar age! And I got carded 4 times in Las Vegas last week. One person thought I was 15. Another thought I was 18, so I guess that's a little better. :S I turn 24 in May (the month

), and people still think I'm like a freshman or something. I'm in grad school. >=( I get carded at R-rated movies too. I can't tell you how happy I was when I got asked if we wanted an alcohol menu at a restaurant once! And just a week ago, when I was going to eat with my family, my parents got asked if they wanted a children's menu. Apparently no one can agree on how old I am.

Rs are for 17 and over unless accompanied by an adult.

Not to be confused with NC-17, which is for 17s and over ONLY. Because that makes sense.

Also if your film is NC-17, no-one will see it. At all.

Probably worth noting that of all age restricted licensing in the UK, those for films are the least enforced ever. I'm pretty sure someone younger looking than May could get into an 18 without even a hint of moral conflict crossing the mind of the ticket seller.

Of course if I were serving May in a bar I would feel obliged to check ID. Partly on the looks thing and partly on my theory that the more sweet and innocent you look in real life, the more downright murderously criminal you will look on an official photo. The camera doesn't add 10lbs, it adds 40 years to life.

Seldom Killer, my ID is an exception to that rule. I look younger than I was when I took the photo, and there's a pronounced eye-glaze effect that comes from having been incredibly baked at the time (on a 1-10 scale, probably lasagna).

I asked that too. The bar tender looked rather embarassed and said it was pub policy. Since I had my drivers' licence with me and am in fact easily old enough to purchase fruit juice, I just shrugged and got on with it.

That condom thing is ridiculous - no wonder teenage pregnancy is a problem! When I worked in Sainsbury's I had to ID someone who was buying vanilla essence, which we both found hilarious.

I had the same experience ordering a coke in a bar once because under 18s aren't meant to be in pubs after a certain time. I told them I don't bring ID because I don't drink alcohol (true at the time, but it was mainly the being 17 thing) but still ended up having my whole group told we'd have to leave because I didn't have ID.

I didn't drink until university, so I never had ID. When I started drinking, I never got IDed, generally - because I was 19/20, over six feet tall with a receding hairline.

(This didn't stop me getting IDed for paracetemol once - punchline to that being that it was only because I was buying two boxes at once!)

Anyway, I had to get ID eventually because they kept throwing me out of places. I literally once got thrown out of somewhere that had already served me because one bartender didn't bother to ID me and then the barmaid two hours later did.

Hm. I was dubious so I did some research and found this industry briefing which confirms what I thought; under 18s are allowed in pubs by law, but licences can specify that they are not allowed in specific pubs, with the caveat that if the pub is exclusively for alcohol, under 16s must be accompanied by an over 18.

Interesting fact which non UK forumites might not know: 16 and 17 year olds are allowed to drink wine or beer with a meal in a pub or restaurant, providing an over 18 is buying the alcohol.
