Although in my town they like to just chuck everybody out once in a while because underage drinking is such an issue that they're worried about police coming in. Most of the pubs just serve underage ones and chuck people out if they get wind of the police instead of making much of an effort to ID people. Any time I have been ID'ed it's been soon after a pub's been done for serving youngins and in a few weeks they'll not bother anymore.

See, here in the U.S. the drinking age is 21, no exceptions. And in California, the person selling the alcohol to an underage consumer can be held civilly and criminally liable for any incidents that occur while the underage consumer is intoxicated. Somebody asked me the other day why I carded his girlfriend, and I told him "Because I want to keep my job and not go to prison." Dude got super pissed off and started calling me names and shit and I'm like "Dude, no, I'm actually being serious" and he didn't believe me. Had to kick him out.

Welu, sure, that's why I checked - your explanation would have made perfect sense if it had in fact been applicable to England. Apparently I just wandered into the one pub in the country where the licence doesn't allow minors to buy fruit juice.

Belgium is pretty easy in that regard: The drinking age for beers and wine etc is sixteen. Spirits eighteen. Carding is usually not an issue unless they really look very very underage. Belgian teens generally seem to grow up with a healthier attitude toward drinking too, being accustomed to the idea of having a beer but not fifteen. At university of course, everything goes out of the window in that regard, but that's why there's extra rules for faculty bars and such.

I'm putting this in the photo thread because photos!

My brother got married yesterday!

Here are some photos of him, his lovely new wife, Sarah, his Best Man, Kathleen and I am also there reading Neil Gaiman's The Day The Saucers Came. There is also a celebrant but it's hard to care about that.

The next day was a reception for friends. It was at a record store/punk venue and it was basically the best wedding reception ever. At Sarah's request I provided some of the entertainment. We got to play in suits so it felt very Ackecocke (that's a death metal band that perform in the most exquisite suits).

It was a good wedding/celebration. I'm so happy for my brother. It's really cool. Now I just have to deal with my whole family telling my partner and I that we're next. They don't know that neither of us can be bothered to get married. It's such a hassle!
